Applications of magnetic resonance imaging to gynecology.

The advent of MRI has improved the ability of the diagnostic radiologist to provide useful clinical information to the practicing gynecologist. Although US remains the screening procedure of choice for evaluation of the uterus and adnexa because of its relative safety and low cost, MRI is now considered the next imaging step. In a woman with pelvic pain, MRI can accurately identify adenomyosis, enumerate and localize uterine fibroids, and provide more accurate identification of endometriosis and cystic teratomas of the ovary than US. Although MRI should not be used as a screening procedure for

Magnetic resonance imaging of the kidneys and adrenals.

Renal and adrenal anatomy, both normal and abnormal, are well depicted by MRI. Although MRI is not a sensitive modality for detection of renal cell carcinoma, it has clinical utility for evaluation of vascular involvement or direct extension of neoplasm into adjacent organs when CT findings are equivocal. Use of signal characteristics has not been useful in differentiating simple from complex cystic renal masses or among the various causes of medical renal disease and renal transplant failure. Similarly, signal characteristics are not sufficiently reliable for differentiating benign from malig

The postoperative spine. Magnetic resonance imaging.

MRI is rapidly becoming the imaging modality of choice in the diagnostic assessment of patients with persistent or recurrent symptoms following spinal surgery. It displays the normal postoperative findings as well as most causes of FBSS. MRI can differentiate persistent or recurrent disk herniation from postoperative scar formation with a greater degree of confidence than other imaging modalities. MRI can determine clinically important functional instability when CT and conventional radiography are inconclusive. This can be particularly helpful in evaluating the patient with multiple lumbar su

Magnetic resonance imaging of the glenoid labrum.

Shoulder complaints are common in the athletic population. Successful treatment is dependent upon the ability to correctly identify the pathologic changes associated with a specific disorder and arrive at an accurate diagnosis. Labral abnormalities are traditionally associated with glenohumeral instability. Isolated labral tears or degenerative changes may also cause shoulder dysfunction. A reliable clinical tool to assess the status of the labrum would be useful for diagnosis and management of shoulder disorders. The magnetic resonance images of 48 shoulders that had subsequent surgical exami

Magnetic resonance imaging in neurological disorders.

To investigate the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in neurological disorders, 115 children were studied in two groups. Group A (78 patients) was studied by paired computed tomography and MRI cranial scans. Group B (37 patients) was studied by paired computed tomography assisted myelography (CTM) and MRI spinal scans. In group A, the scans were generally equivalent for supratentorial tumours and for investigating fits, hydrocephalus, benign intracranial hypertension, and cerebral atrophies, but MRI scanning was superior for posterior fossa tumours and cysts. In group B, MRI scans were

[Magnetic resonance tomography in ophthalmologic diagnosis].

First introduced into clinical use in 1981 as an investigative modality, this technique offers a wealth of information about the topography and physicochemical composition of the soft tissues in the orbit and central nervous system. However, to date, some of this information is still not incompletely understood. This method can be used to augment the usual diagnosis methods in selected cases of intraocular tumor. It is possible to differente between Coats disease and non-calcified retinoblastoma, and the paramagnetic properties of melanin allow the melanin content of choroidal tumors to be est

Magnetic resonance imaging of the intracranial epidermoid.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed in five cases of intracranial epidermoid. In three of the five patients, the low-density mass on the CT scans showed as low intensity on the T 1 and high intensity on the T2 weighted images. In the two other patients, the masses with high or isodensity on CT showed as high intensity on the T 1 weighted images and as high or low intensity on the T 2 weighted images. Thus, the intensity of epidermoid on MRI correlated fairly well with the CT density, although the former was more variable. The variety of intensities on MRI reflects differences in the

Magnetic resonance study of renal transplantation.

In the last few years, we have focused our research effort on the magnetic resonance spectroscopic (NMR) studies of organ transplantation in the rat. P-31 NMR was employed to study changes in high-energy phosphates, intracellular pH in vivo of transplanted kidneys either during normal function, while undergoing the rejection process or subjected to other insults (e.g. ischemia, cyclosporine nephrotoxicity, urinary obstruction) which may also cause graft dysfunction. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters, specifically relative peak areas and intracellular pH, accurately distinguished amon

Intrauterine diagnosis of hydranencephaly by magnetic resonance.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to confirm an ultrasound diagnosis of hydranencephaly in utero. MRI provided an accurate anatomical assessment, influencing the pregnancy management. The result supports previous reports suggesting that MRI may be a useful complement to ultrasonography in intrauterine diagnoses.

Magnetic resonance imaging of intracavernous pathology.

To evaluate the usefulness of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of intracavernous pathology, T1-weighted spin echo images of four vascular lesions and 10 neoplastic lesions with surgically confirmed cavernous sinus (CS) invasion were reviewed retrospectively. In one case of traumatic carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) and one of dural arteriovenous malformation (AVM), the internal carotid artery (ICA) and rapid shunted flow were depicted as signal voids, and the relationship between the ICA and shunted flow was clearly shown. Normal venous flow appeared as a low-intensity area and was observed even

Magnetic resonance imaging of anomalous fetuses.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used sparingly in obstetrics. The reasons for this relate mainly to cost, availability, difficulty obtaining clear images because of fetal movement, and the convenience and utility of ultrasound. However, MRI use is expanding and has the potential to play an important role in selected problem pregnancies. We studied the pregnancies of five women whose fetuses showed anomalies by ultrasound. These included cases of a large body wall defect, a diaphragmatic hernia, hydrocephalus, Meckel-Gruber syndrome, and iniencephaly with a diaphragmatic hernia (the i

Magnetic resonance imaging of spinal amyloid.

This report describes a patient with a history of breast carcinoma who presented with back pain and multiple collapsed vertebrae. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a diffuse bone marrow abnormality, more in keeping with an infiltrative process than with metastases. A bone biopsy confirmed the suspected diagnosis of vertebral involvement by amyloid.

Magnetic resonance imaging of spinal injury.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed on 30 patients following spinal injury (SI). Spin-echo sequences and surface coils were used for all patients. Plain radiographs, high-resolution computed tomography (CT), and MRI were compared for the delineation of bone, disc, and ligament injury, measurement of sagittal spinal canal diameter and subluxation, epidural hematoma, and spinal cord structure. Myelography or intrathecal contrast-enhanced CT were not performed on any of these patients. Magnetic resonance imaging accurately delineated intraspinal pathology in two of four patients with a

Magnetic resonance imaging of the knee: an overview.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides a new and important tool for investigating knee disorders. This article reviews the basic techniques available for investigation of the knee using MRI and describes the anatomy as delineated by this method. A large number of disorders are best evaluated by MRI, including internal abnormalities such as those of the cruciate ligaments and the menisci. Other disorders include abnormalities of the patella and quadriceps mechanism, cartilage, and synovium. Bony abnormalities such as osteonecrosis and tumors, as well as bone contusions and fractures, also ma

[Whole body magnetic resonance imaging].

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has a growing number of applications in the whole body area. Its role cannot be properly considered without comparing it to the diagnostic capabilities and availability of sonography and the high standard of newest-generation CT. MRI is an accepted diagnostic modality for diseases involving the pelvis and the musculoskeletal system. It is equal or superior to other modalities in examination of the neck, the cardiovascular system, the upper abdomen and the retroperitoneum.

[Magnetic resonance imaging of hypothalamic hamartoma].

Magnetic resonance (MR) findings of two patients with a hypothalamic hamartoma are discussed. The two girls showed clinical symptoms and endocrinological signs of precocious puberty. MR imaging was of diagnostic value superior to that of CT in the demonstration of the characteristic location of this tumor and relationships to the neighboring structures because of its multi-dimensional utility. Although it has been reported that CT showed this lesion as isodense to the grey matter with and without injection of contrast medium, MR imaging depicted the lesion as a high signal intensity area on T

Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and spine.

The efficacy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of diseases of the central nervous system is reviewed. MRI, computed tomography (CT) and certain radionuclide studies are compared in the evaluation of intracranial tumours, cerebral vascular disease, multiple sclerosis and other white matter diseases, dementia, head injury, infection, epilepsy, spinal lesions and in paediatric central nervous system disorders. The measurement of cerebrospinal fluid volumes and dynamics by MRI is discussed. MRI most clearly has advantages where CT is degraded by bone hardening and streak artefac
