Fibrous Dysplasia Characterization Using Lacunarity Analysis.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a developmental anomaly in which the normal medullary space of the affected bone is replaced by fibro-osseous tissue. This condition is typically encountered in adolescents and young adults. It affects the maxillofacial region and it can often cause severe deformity and asymmetry. Therefore, accurate diagnosis is critical to determine the appropriate treatment of each case. In this sense, computed tomography (CT) is a relevant resource among the imaging techniques for correct diagnosis of this condition. Thus, in this paper, we propose to analyze fibrous dysplasia thr

The Sarnat studies in craniofacial biology.

Dr. Bernard Sarnat is one of plastic surgery's greatest laboratory investigators. His contributions to our understanding of modern craniofacial molecular biology are immense. His landmark studies continue to influence the way we approach and treat patients today. This article outlines his classic investigations of the craniofacial skeleton, with particular interest in lower face, midface, and upper face development; cranial suture and cranial base biology; and tooth and dental development. In this article, a brief summary of Dr. Sarnat's investigations are followed by how these data have had a

Ichthyosis vulgaris and pycnodysostosis: an unusual occurrence.

Pycnodysostosis is a rare autosomal recessive disorder whose gene responsible for this phenotype (CTSK), mapped to human chromosome 1q21, code for the enzyme cathepsin K, a lysosomal cysteine protease; with an estimated incidence of 1.7 per 1 million births. This clinical entity includes micromelic dwarfism, increased radiological bone density, dysplasia of the skull, acro-osteolysis, straightening of the mandibular angle and in some cases, dysplasia of the acromial end of the clavicle. Oral and maxillo-facial manifestations of this disease are very clear. Herein we reported a case of pycnodys

Concepts for the treatment of adolescent patients with missing permanent teeth.

INTRODUCTION: Missing permanent teeth is observed with syndromes or is frequently hereditarily propagated in families. The treatment of these patients is a multi-task of specialists of oral surgery, orthodontics and prosthodontics. DISCUSSION: Despite functional and aesthetic considerations, the main problem of all treatment is that it had to be performed in a growing child. This article discusses the conventional and implant-driven concepts to treat patients from childhood to adolescence with selective or multiple missing permanent teeth.

Maxillary and mandibular distraction osteogenesis in growing patients: lessons learned after 14 years and update on indications.

In the past decade, distraction osteogenesis (DO) has become increasingly popular and has opened new therapeutic perspectives for the treatment of numerous congenital and acquired craniofacial skeletal anomalies. However, DO mechanisms still remain unclear and different treatment protocols are applied by different groups. Here the authors use their 14 years-clinical experience to evaluate DO parameters such as maxillary and mandibular DO stability over time, especially in growing patients, DO effects on soft tissues and the correlation between the bone gain and lengthening capabilities of the

The Impetus of Artificial Intelligence on Periodontal Diagnosis: A Brief Synopsis.

The current advances in digitized data additions, machine learning and computing framework, lead to the swiftly emerging concept of "Artificial Intelligence" (AI), that are developing into areas that were formerly contemplated for human expertise. AI is a relatively rapid paced mechanics wherein the computer technology is tuned to perform human tasks. An auxiliary domain of AI is machine learning (ML), and Deep learning, a subclass of ML technique comprehends multi-layer mathematical operations. AI-based applications have tremendous potential to improve and systematize patient care thereby all

Gingival Neurofibroma With Teardrop-Shaped Defects of the Interdental Alveolar Bone: An Unusual Oral Manifestation of Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Gingival enlargement, although frequently encountered in clinical settings, is rarely associated with systemic diseases or syndromes. Among the diverse pathological conditions of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1), minor manifestations in the orofacial region are occasionally overlooked. Herein, the authors present an unusual case of gingival neurofibroma in a patient with NF-1 associated with characteristic osseous defects in the alveolus in the long-term course of 17 years from the first examination.A 5-year-old boy with NF-1 was referred for the evaluation of gingival enlargement in the poster

Oromaxillofacial osseous abnormality in Sturge-Weber syndrome: case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of a 17-month-old child affected by Sturge-Weber syndrome who had unusually rapid overgrowth of the left frontal, temporal, orbital, and maxillary regions. CT angiography illustrated osteohypertrophy with periostitis and associated soft tissue hypertrophy directly corresponding to the distribution of the cutaneous port-wine stain. Extended maxillectomy was performed because of rapid growth and clinical debilitation, with surgical pathology revealing juvenile ossifying fibroma.

Gene-gene interaction for nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate in Chilean case-parent trios.

OBJECTIVE: Nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) is a birth defect for which several genes susceptibility genes been proposed. Consequently, it has been suggested that many of these genes belong to common inter-related pathways during craniofacial development gene-gene interaction. We evaluated the presence of gene-gene interaction for single nucleotide polymorphisms within interferon regulatory factor 6 (IRF6), muscle segment homeobox 1 (MSX1), bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) and transforming growth factor 3 (TGFB3) genes in NSCL/P risk in Chilean case-parent trios.

Prenatal diagnosis and molecular genetic studies on a new case of agnathia-otocephaly.

Otocephaly is a severe and lethal malformation. We report a new case of a fetus with agnathia-otocephaly, presenting only the facial findings but with otherwise normal organs. The fetal karyotype was normal. We examined the fetal DNA for uniparental disomy of chromosomes 3 and 4, since the mother is a carrier of a t(3;4) chromosome, but did not identify any evidence. We were also unable to find mutations or possible associations with candidate otocephalic genes, including OTX2 and PGAP1. These findings suggest that the molecular etiology of agnathia-otocephaly is still unknown with a mutation
