Ecology of Australia: the effects of nutrient-poor soils and intense fires.

Australia, the flattest, driest, and geologically oldest vegetated continent, has a uniquely high proportion of nutrient-poor soils. We develop a "Nutrient-Poverty/Intense-Fire Theory," which postulates that most anomalous features of organisms and ecosystems of Australia are the evolutionary consequences of adaptations to nutrient poverty, compounded by intense fire that tends to occur as a result of nutrient poverty. The fundamental tenet of the theory is that plants growing in environments with plentiful light and periodic adequate moisture, but on soils poor in phosphorus, zinc, and other

Environmental factors and biotic interactions mutually shaped the heterogeneity of deep-time diversification in predatory insect groups.

Predatory insect groups play key roles in terrestrial ecosystems and encompass a diverse array of distinct insect clades that utilize unique predatory strategies. Compared to insect herbivores and pollinators, the diversification patterns of predatory insect groups have received less attention. Here, we compile and analyze comprehensive fossil occurrence data from seven predatory insect groups, revealing heterogeneous diversification patterns both within each group and among different niche-based categories. To explore potential drivers of this heterogeneity, we examine nine abiotic and biotic

Gene expression changes in honey bees induced by sublethal imidacloprid exposure during the larval stage.

Honey bee larvae exposed to sublethal doses of imidacloprid show behavioural abnormalities as adult insects. Previous studies have demonstrated that this phenomenon originates from abnormal neural development in response to imidacloprid exposure. Here, we further investigated the global gene expression changes in the heads of newly emerged adults and observed that 578 genes showed more than 2-fold changes in gene expression after imidacloprid exposure. This information might aid in understanding the effects of pesticides on the health of pollinators. For example, the genes encoding major royal

Cloning and functional expression of intracellular loop variants of the honey bee (Apis mellifera) RDL GABA receptor.

The insect GABA receptor, RDL (resistance to dieldrin), plays central roles in neuronal signalling and is the target of several classes of insecticides. To study the GABA receptor from an important pollinator species, we cloned Rdl cDNA from the honey bee, Apis mellifera. Three Rdl variants were identified, arising from differential use of splice acceptor sites in the large intracellular loop between transmembrane regions 3 and 4. These variants were renamed from previously, as Amel_RDLvar1, Amel_RDLvar2 and Amel_RDLvar3. When expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes, the three variants showed no d

A Diverse Range of Novel RNA Viruses in Geographically Distinct Honey Bee Populations.

Understanding the diversity and consequences of viruses present in honey bees is critical for maintaining pollinator health and managing the spread of disease. The viral landscape of honey bees (Apis mellifera) has changed dramatically since the emergence of the parasitic mite Varroa destructor, which increased the spread of virulent variants of viruses such as deformed wing virus. Previous genomic studies have focused on colonies suffering from infections by Varroa and virulent viruses, which could mask other viral species present in honey bees, resulting in a distorted view of viral diversit

The role of the integuments in pollen tube guidance in flowering plants.

In angiosperms, pollen tube entry into the ovule generally takes place through the micropyle, but the exact role of the micropyle in pollen tube guidance remains unclear. A limited number of studies have examined eudicots with bitegmic micropyles, but information is lacking in ovules of basal/early-divergent angiosperms with unitegmic micropyles. We have evaluated the role of the micropyle in pollen tube guidance in an early-divergent angiosperm (Annona cherimola) and the evolutionarily derived Arabidopsis thaliana by studying γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs) in w

Integrated transcriptomic and BSA-seq analyses identify novel QTL and candidate genes for stay-green in maize.

INTRODUCTION: The stay-green trait is crucial for enhancing maize yield and stress tolerance, yet its genetic basis in new germplasm remains … oxygen species metabolism, photosynthesis, and chloroplast maintenance at 10, 20, and 30 days after pollination (DAP), respectively. WGCNA identified six hub genes functionally involved in transcriptional regulation, ROS scavenging, and photosynthesis. Notably, three genes (ZmFSD3, ZmWRKY62, and ZmNAC29) were located within BSA-defined intervals and supported …

Comparative Floral Development and Anatomy Reveal Distinct Origins of the Gynophore in Meso-Papilionoideae.

The Meso-Papilionoideae clade comprises most papilionoid legumes and includes small clades with heterogeneous floral morphologies. Some spec … ons in the examined flowers may represent evolutionary adaptations associated with their respective pollination syndromes. Ovary development follows a certain pattern among legumes, with limited variations, including the formation of a basal pedestal beneath the carpel suture in species bearing a gynophore. The gynophore is anatomically distinct from the ovar …

Fine mapping and candidate gene analysis of tassel glume closure1 (tgc1) gene in maize (Zea mays L.).

The tassel glume closure1 (tgc1) mutant was identified and mapped, and ZmKAO1, which encodes an ent-kaurenoic acid oxidase, is the key candidate gene. Tassel glume timely opening is a key trait that influences cross-pollination and hybrid breeding. However, in maize (Zea mays L.), the related genes regulating this process remain largely unexplored. Here, we identified tassel glume closure1 (tgc1), a recessive mutant that exhibits tassel glume closure, anther non-extrusion, and no pollen shedding at the adult-plant stage. Anatomical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations revealed t…

The CmMYB6-CmWRKY13-CmBr module mediates cucurbitacin B accumulation in melon fruit under CPPU treatment.

Cucurbitacin B (CuB), a key compound responsible for the bitterness of melon fruit, significantly reduces fruit quality and consumer acceptance. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanism underlying CuB biosynthesis is essential for improving melon fruit quality. In this research, we investigated CuB levels in the cmwrky13-knockout mutant following treatment with 20 mg L-1 CPPU (20CPPU) and hand pollination. The CuB content decreased by approximately 30% in the cmwrky13-knockout mutant compared with wild type under 20CPPU treatment. Yeast one-hybrid, dual-luciferase, and electrophoretic …

Hermaphroditism in Cannabis sativa L.: Impacts, Inducers, and Industry Implications.

Cannabis sativa L. is a predominantly dioecious species, but sex expression is highly plastic and can be modified by genetic, hormonal, developmental, and environmental factors. This plasticity has major implications for commercial production because hermaphroditic expression in female plants can cause unintended pollination, seed formation, reduced floral quality, and losses in cannabinoid yield. This review summarizes current understanding of sex determination and sex-expression instability in C. sativa, with emphasis on hermaphroditism and its agronomic significance. We examine the genomic …

Uncovering chromatin accessibility dynamics in early maize endosperm and seed coat differentiation.

The early development of maize kernels plays a crucial role in determining yield and grain quality. Deciphering chromatin accessibility dynamics can further advance our understanding of tissue-specific regulatory networks. In this study, we performed an integrated multiomics analysis to explore chromatin accessibility dynamics during cell fate transitions in early kernel development. Endosperm and seed coat samples collected at 4-10 days after pollination (DAP) are chosen for the assay for transposase-accessible chromatin sequencing (ATAC-seq) and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data, which reveal th…

Inverse Trend Between Tree Pollen and Fungal Concentrations With Allergic Sensitization Rates in Seoul for 25 Years.

A growing number of individuals are developing allergic diseases due to pollen exposure. Seasonal variations and increased pollen concentrations have occurred with the increased rates of allergic sensitization among both children and adults. Temperature significantly influences pollination, particularly in spring- and early summer-flowering plants, with weather conditions affecting pollen allergen levels. Human activities, including agriculture and deforestation, increase carbon emissions, leading to higher atmospheric CO₂ levels that may enhance allergenic plant productivity. Climate change a…

Lithium chloride effectively kills the honey bee parasite Varroa destructor by a systemic mode of action.

Honey bees are increasingly important in the pollination of crops and wild plants. Recent reports of the weakening and periodical high losses of managed honey bee colonies have alarmed beekeeper, farmers and scientists. Infestations with the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor in combination with its associated viruses have been identified as a crucial driver of these health problems. Although yearly treatments are required to prevent collapses of honey bee colonies, the number of effective acaricides is small and no new active compounds have been registered in the past 25 years.
