BACKGROUND: In current clinical practice, intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) head and neck cancer (HNC) plans are generated using a constant relative biological effectiveness (cRBE) of 1.1. The primary goal of this study was to explore the dosimetric impact of proton range uncertainties on RBE-weighted dose (RWD) distributions using a variable RBE (vRBE) model in the context of bilateral HNC IMPT plans.
METHODS: The current study included the computed tomography (CT) datasets of ten bilateral HNC patients who had undergone photon therapy. Each patient's plan was generated using three I

Because proton beam therapy (PBT) can lower the dose of radiation to the heart, lungs, and breast, it is an established radiation modality for patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). Pencil beam scanning (PBS) PBT facilitates the treatment of more extensive targets. This may be especially of value for lymphoma patients who require RT to both mediastinal and axillary targets, defined here as extended target RT (ETRT), given the target distribution and need to minimize the lung, heart, and breast dose. Using the Proton Collaborative Group registry, we identified patients with HL treated with PBT to

PURPOSE: Hypofractionated radiation therapy has been safely implemented in the treatment of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) but not locally advanced NSCLC owing to prohibitive toxicities with photon therapy. Proton therapy, however, may allow for safe delivery of hypofractionated radiation therapy. We sought to determine whether hypofractionated proton therapy with concurrent chemotherapy improves overall survival.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: The Proton Collaborative Group conducted a phase 1/2 single-arm nonrandomized prospective multicenter trial from 2013 through 2018. We receive

Proton neutron gamma-x detection (PNGXD) is a novel imaging concept being investigated for tumor localization during proton therapy that uses secondary neutron interactions with a gadolinium contrast agent (GDCA) to produce characteristic photons within the 40-200 keV energy region. The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the feasibility of implementing this procedure by performing experimental measurements on a passive double scattering proton treatment unit. Five experimental measurements were performed with varying concentrations and irradiation conditions. Photon spectra

The influenza A and B viruses are the primary cause of seasonal flu epidemics. Common to both viruses is the M2 protein, a homotetrameric transmembrane proton channel that acidifies the virion after endocytosis. Although influenza A M2 (AM2) and B M2 (BM2) are functional analogs, they have little sequence homology, except for a conserved HXXXW motif, which is responsible for proton selectivity and channel gating. Importantly, BM2 contains a second titratable histidine, His-27, in the tetrameric transmembrane domain that forms a reverse WXXXH motif with the gating tryptophan. To understand how

The rate of cyanide binding with the oxidized cytochrome-c oxidase in proteoliposomes is controlled by ionization of a protein group with pK approximately 6.7, the ligand reacting with the protonated enzyme only [(1983) Bioorg. Chem. (USSR) 9, 216-227]. As shown here, the kinetics of cyanide binding depends on the pH inside the proteoliposomes. The reaction rate is affected by the electrical potential difference across the proteoliposome membranes as if the a3-linked ionizable group exchanged H+ with the proteoliposome interior electrogenically. The data corroborate a hypothesis on the existen

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study investigates whether combined proton-photon therapy (CPPT) improves treatment plan quality compared to single-modality intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) or intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) for head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. Different proton beam arrangements for CPPT and IMPT are compared, which could be of specific interest concerning potential future upright-positioned treatments. Furthermore, it is evaluated if CPPT benefits remain under inter-fractional anatomical changes for HNC treatments.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five HNC patien

GOALS: We assessed the efficacy of polaprezinc plus proton pump inhibitor (PPI) treatment for endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)-induced ulcer healing compared with rebamipide plus PPI treatment.
BACKGROUND: ESD has been widely used as a local treatment option that cures gastric neoplasms. However, it causes large and deep artificial ulcers, and there are no guidelines with regard to the optimal treatment durations and drug regimens for ESD-induced ulcers. Polaprezinc is effective for promoting ulcer healing and helps enhance the quality of ulcer healing.

1. At 37 degrees C in 0.1 M NaCl the pKa of hyoscine (10 mM) is 7.53; the non-protonated form has about one-tenth of the affinity (log K = 8.58) of the protonated form (log K = 9.58) for muscarine-sensitive receptors of the guinea-pig ileum at 37 degrees C. 2. In the same conditions the pKa of hyoscine N-oxide is 5.78 and the non-protonated form is inactive on the ileum whereas the protonated form is highly active with log K estimated to be 9.9, at least as active as hyoscine methobromide (log K = 9.85). 3. Hyoscine methobromide appears to occupy less space in water than atropine methobromide;

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy has both immunostimulant and immunosuppressive effects, particularly in radiation-induced lymphopenia. Proton therapy has demonstrated potential in mitigating this lymphopenia, yet the mechanisms by which different types of radiation affect the immune system function are not fully characterized. The Circulating Immunes Cells, Cytokines and Brain Radiotherapy (CYRAD) trial aims to compare the effects of postoperative X-ray and proton radiotherapy on circulating leukocyte subpopulations and cytokine levels in patients with head and neck (CNS and ear nose throat) cancer.

BACKGROUND: Proton therapy (PRT) is an innovative radiotherapeutic modality for the treatment of cancer with unique ballistic properties. The depth-dose distribution of a proton beam reduces exposure of healthy tissues to radiations, compared with photon-therapy (XRT). To date, only few indications for proton-therapy, like pediatric cancers, chordomas, or intra-ocular neoplasms, are reimbursed by Health systems. There is no published or recruiting prospective study evaluating the impact of proton-therapy or conventional irradiation on neurocognitive function for meningioma patients. Notably, l

A combination of measurements of the CP properties of Higgs boson interactions with electroweak gauge bosons is presented, using 140 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector. Results from vector boson fusion H→ττ/WW^{*}/γγ, inclusive H→ZZ^{*}, and WH,H→bb[over ¯] channels are combined. No evidence of CP violation is observed, and constrains on the CP-violating operators in the Standard Model effective field theory framework (SMEFT) are set in the Warsaw basis. The results from the combination improve by over 40% on previous individual limits on c_{

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer is commonly treated with stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) and hypofractionated RT (HFRT). Delivering these ablative regimens with proton beam therapy (PBT) may yield dosimetric and clinical advantages, particularly for high-risk cases. We evaluated safety and efficacy of SBRT/HFRT PBT for lung tumors, including unfavorable subgroups.
METHODS: Adults with lung tumors treated with PBT ≤15 fractions were identified from a prospective, multi-institutional registry. Eligible regimens included 4-5 fractions at ≥10Gy/fraction (≥48Gy total) or 8-15 fractions at ≥3.5Gy/f

Objective: Thymic malignancies (TM) are rare tumors with long-term survivorship, causing concerns for radiotherapy-related late side effects. Proton therapy (PT) reduces the radiation dose to organs at risk, potentially decreasing long-term toxicities while preserving disease control. We report patterns-of-care and early clinical outcomes after PT for thymoma and thymic carcinoma. Methods: Between January 2008 and March 2017, 30 patients with TMs enrolled on one of two IRB-approved prospective protocols and received postoperative or definitive PT. Clinical outcomes, pathology, treatment dose,

Protonation, hydration, and cluster formation of ammonia, formaldehyde, formic acid, acetone, butanone, 2-ocatanone, 2-nonanone, acetophenone, ethanol, pyridine, and its derivatives were studied by IMS-TOFMS technique equipped with a corona discharge ion source. It was found that tendency of the protonated molecules, MH+, to participate in hydration or cluster formation depends on the basicity of M. The molecules with higher basicity were hydrated less than those with lower basicity. The mass spectra of the low basic molecules such as formaldehyde exhibited larger clusters of MnH+(H2O)n, while

PURPOSE: At present, proton craniospinal irradiation (CSI) for growing children is delivered to the whole vertebral body (WVB) to avoid asymmetric growth. We aimed to demonstrate the feasibility and potential clinical benefit of delivering vertebral body sparing (VBS) versus WVB CSI with passively scattered (PS) and intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) in growing children treated for medulloblastoma.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Five plans were generated for medulloblastoma patients, who had been previously treated with CSI PS proton radiation therapy: (1) single posteroanterior (PA) PS field
