OBJECTIVE: Detection of meningococcal carriers is key to understanding the epidemiology of Neisseria meningitidis, yet no gold standard has been established. Here, we directly compare two methods for collecting pharyngeal swabs to identify meningococcal carriers.

Our early experience with a rare atypical cleft of the soft palate in a 15-month-old female infant is presented. The cleft extended obliquely across the soft palate from the retromolar region on the left to the base of an intact uvula. Surgical management included a three-layer closure and lengthening of the left side of the soft palate. Close follow-up and reporting of the patient's progress are planned.

BACKGROUND: The authors aimed to report a hitherto undescribed class of patients with the obvious phenotype of a novel soft palate dysplasia (SPD) combining unilateral soft palate hypoplasia with a fully developed uvula. Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) is an effective surgical procedure for treating habitual snoring. It is performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure and consists of enlarging the oropharyngeal air space and restructuring the uvula, velum, and pharyngeal pillars. We used LAUP in 112 patients with upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) (Lipman grade II) over the last three years and achieve a care rate of 87.5%.

Sporotrichosis is a human and animal disease caused by dimorphic pathogenic species of the genus Sporothrix. We report a dramatic presentation of Sporothrix brasiliensis infection, with destruction of the nasal septum, soft palate, and uvula of an HIV-infected woman. She was successfully treated with amphotericin B deoxycholate followed by itraconazole. Sporotrichosis remains a neglected opportunistic infection in patients with AIDS and awareness of this potentially fatal infection is of utmost importance.
