Although ischemic stroke and coronary artery disease (CAD) share common risk factors and pathophysiology, the risk of stroke in patients with CAD remains unclear. We sought to evaluate the risk of ischemic stroke in patients with suspected CAD according to coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) findings. Presence, severity, and extent of CAD were evaluated in 1137 patients with suspected CAD who underwent CCTA and SPECT. Primary outcome was the occurrence of ischemic stroke. During follow-up (median 26 months), ischemic stroke wa

BACKGROUND: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) and coronary artery calcium (CAC) have been associated with incident coronary artery disease (CAD) and all-cause mortality in the general population. Their prognostic impact in HIV is unknown.
METHODS: Observational study of 843 consecutive HIV-infected patients receiving antiretroviral therapy for at least 6 months. Risk stratification was performed with coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring and EAT screening. Patients were followed for CAD and all-cause mortality for a median of 2.8 years accounting for a total of 2572 patient-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: The present study used iMap IVUS system to compare neointimal tissue components between DES and bare-metal stents (BMSs).
BACKGROUND: Drug-eluting stents (DESs) can cause impaired arterial healing, which constitutes the most important pathological substrate underlying late DES thrombosis. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)-based tissue characterization allows for the in vivo identification of neointimal tissue components.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Follow-up IVUS data after coronary stenting (9.8 ± 9.4 months from index procedures) was obtained from consecutive 61 lesions (34 in DES, 27 i

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with increased coronary artery disease (CAD) and coronary artery calcification. We hypothesized that the osteogenic factor, bone morphogenetic protein-4 (sBMP-4), is elevated in subjects with both CKD and CAD. Serum was collected from 79 subjects undergoing diagnostic angiography and stratified according to CAD and CKD status. Subjects with both CAD and CKD had significantly elevated sBMP-4 compared to those with only one or no disease. sBMP-4 continued to be associated with the presence of both diseases after adjustment for other risk factors. BACKGROUND: Carotid and coronary atherosclerosis are critical determinants of cardiovascular risk, yet their interrelationship in middle-aged populations is incompletely understood. This study assessed carotid plaque composition, risk-factor associations, coronary disease, and sex differences in a subclinical cohort.
METHODS: Within the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study, 533 asymptomatic individuals aged 50-64 years with carotid plaque ≥2.7 mm on ultrasound underwent 3T multi-contrast carotid cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and coronary computed tomography angiography. Carotid pl

PURPOSE: To evaluate coronary artery calcium (CAC) scores in a large Turkish cohort using age- and sex-specific percentiles, and to assess the agreement between CAD-RADS plaque burden scores and percentile-based CAC classification.
METHODS: A total of 4,887 clinically referred patients who underwent coronary CT angiography (CCTA) with non-contrast imaging were retrospectively evaluated. CAC scores were calculated using the Agatston method. Percentile reference values were generated according to age, sex, and number of cardiovascular risk factors. "Coronary age" was estimated by matching each

OBJECTIVE: The extent of calcification in the tibial and coronary arteries predicts major ischemic events. Tibial calcification predicts ischemic events in a manner independent of the degree of associated atherosclerotic occlusive disease, and coronary calcification can improve risk stratification in patients at intermediate risk for cardiovascular disease. We thus assessed the relationship between tibial and coronary calcification, the influence of cardiovascular risk factors on their extent, and their individual predictive value on major adverse limb events (MALEs) and major adverse cardiac

BACKGROUND: Current approaches to estimating the probability of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) often fail to reflect the clinical complexity of the condition, as they tend to oversimplify it by neglecting its progressive nature, variability in glycemic control, and the influence of disease duration. The SCORE2-Diabetes (SCORE2-D) model was developed to offer a more nuanced cardiovascular risk estimate by incorporating continuous variables and individualized risk factor weighting. However, its correlation with the actual presence and severity of C

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography attenuation correction (CTAC) improves perfusion quantification of hybrid myocardial perfusion imaging by correcting for attenuation artifacts. Artificial intelligence (AI) can automatically measure coronary artery calcium (CAC) from CTAC to improve risk prediction but could potentially derive additional anatomic features.
OBJECTIVES: The authors evaluated AI-based derivation of cardiac anatomy from CTAC and assessed its added prognostic utility.
METHODS: The authors considered consecutive patients without known coronary artery disease who underwent single-pho

Mutations in DDX58 (DExD/H-box helicase 58), which encodes the cytoplasmic RNA sensor retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I), were recently identified in the rare autoimmune disease Singleton-Merten syndrome (SMS). We report the spontaneous development of psoriasis-like skin lesions as an SMS-like symptom in transgenic mice harboring one of the RIG-I SMS variants, E373A. Histological analysis revealed typical characteristics of psoriasis, including the abnormal proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes leading to epidermal hyperplasia, and infiltrates consisting of neutrophils, dendri

BACKGROUND: Patients with initial transient ischaemic attack (TIA) subsequently have a higher risk of recurrent TIA or acute ischemic stroke (AIS). The role of scoring intracranial arterial calcification (IAC) in predicting the prevalence of stroke remains unclear. We aim to evaluate if radiological CT calcium score measuring IAC burden could predict future ischemic events in a cohort of TIA patients.
METHODS: We studied consecutive patients from July 2014 to December 2015 who presented with first episode of TIA. All patients had noncontrasted CT or CT-angiogram of the brain on admission. CT

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines suggest treatment for many individuals who may never develop a stroke. We hypothesized that a combination of coronary artery calcification (CAC) and carotid artery intima-media thickness (C IMT) data could better individualize risk assessment for ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack events.
METHODS: A total of 4720 individuals from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis were evaluated for ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack. Cox proportional hazards models for time to incident ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack were used to examine C

OBJECTIVE: Although it is traditionally considered ominous, the natural history of early proximal attachment site endoleaks (IA) after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is not well known. Our aim was to identify risk factors for persistent type IA endoleaks and to determine their effect on long-term outcomes after EVAR.
METHODS: All patients who underwent infrarenal EVAR at a single institution between 1998 and 2015 were identified. Preoperative axial imaging and intraoperative arteriograms were reviewed, and those patients with a type IA endoleak were further studied. Aneurysm features wer

OBJECTIVE: Advanced endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) with fenestrated and branched stent grafts is increasingly being used to repair complex aortic aneurysms; however, these devices can rotate unpredictably during deployment, leading to device misalignment. The objectives of this study were to quantify the short-term clinical outcomes in patients with intraoperative stent graft rotation and to identify quantitative anatomic markers of the arterial geometry that can predict stent graft rotation preoperatively.
METHODS: A prospective study evaluating all patients undergoing advanced EVAR was

Patients presenting to the emergency department with acute chest pain, negative conventional troponin and electrocardiogram require serial testing to rule out acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We studied the association of highly sensitive troponin (hsTn) I with vulnerable plaque features as detected by coronary dual source computed tomography angiography (DSCTA) and determined whether hsTn I at the time of presentation combined with early DSCTA could improve classification of patients as high-risk or low risk for ACS. We included 220 patients with acute chest pain, negative electrocardiogram and
