The effect of magnesium supplementation in pregnancy was studied in 568 women who were treated with 15 mmol magnesium-aspartate-hydrochloride per day or aspartic acid as placebo given orally during pregnancy from less than or equal to 16 weeks. Allocation to the two groups was performed according to the women's birthdates. We calculated new birthweight, length and head circumference standards for caucasian boys and girls between 26 and 43 weeks gestation from 28,126 singleton live births at our hospital between 1980 and 1985. Only stillbirths and infants with serious congenital abnormalities were excluded, whereas babies born to mothers suffering from complications known to affect fetal size were considered part of the population to which standards will be applied and thus remained included. The standards were determined from centiles for each gestational week independent of the mode of distribution of the data.

The beneficial effects of the oral application of zinc aspartate in pregnancy is investigated in a randomly selected study group of 179 patients and a control group of 345 patients. This study confirms the prophylactic effectiveness of zinc replacement in reducing the overall complication rate for both mother and fetus and in particular for large-for-date and small-for-date infants. Antenatal Bartter syndrome typically presents with marked fetal polyuria that leads to polyhydramnios and premature delivery. In our case, polyhydramnios was detected at 26 weeks of gestation and amniotic fluid chloride level was high. Serial amnion-drains were performed. During indomethacine treatment, fetal bradycardia developed. The mother was given daily oral potassium to maintain normal serum level and prevent fetal arrhythmias. After birth, hypokalaemic alkalosis, low chloride, hyper-reninemia and hyperaldosteronemia were detected.

46,XY disorders of sex development (DSD) refer to a wide range of abnormal genitalia, including hypospadias, which affects approximately 0.5% of male newborns. We identified three different nonsense mutations of CXorf6 in individuals with hypospadias and found that its mouse homolog was specifically expressed in fetal Sertoli and Leydig cells around the critical period for sex development. These data imply that CXorf6 is a causative gene for hypospadias.

Information on structure and manifestation of genes determining development of internal and external male genitals is considered. The process of discovering the gene responsible for differentiation of the indifferent fetal gonad into testes is described. OBJECTIVES: To explore the feasibility and added value of three-dimensional (3D) inversion rendering of the developing embryonic/fetal ventricular system, and to apply this display technique to enhance the sonographic examination of holoprosencephaly.
