PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of biometric variables on refractive outcomes after cataract surgery in angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) patients.
METHODS: In this case-control study, 42 ACG patients, 40 open-angle glaucoma (OAG) patients, and 35 controls without glaucoma who had undergone conventional cataract surgery were enrolled consecutively. Electronic medical records, including preoperative biometric variables (keratometric diopter, axial length, anterior chamber depth, and lens thickness), the refractive change (RC), and the absolute value of refractive change (ARC) were reviewed.

UNLABELLED: We present a surgical technique in which polyethylene glycol hydrogel is used to seal corneal incisions and maintain air in the anterior chamber. This technique was used in 11 eyes that had Descemet-stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK). In 2 cases, DSEK was combined with cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation. In all cases, the anterior chamber was well formed with no leakage and the donor graft remained attached following surgery. The use of polyethylene glycol hydrogel in DSEK and combined DSEK-cataract surgery may shorten surgery, decrease suture-induced corn

PURPOSE: Progression of diabetic macular edema has been reported as a common cause of poor visual acuity recovery after cataract surgery in patients with diabetes. Despite being responsible for the blood supply to the outer retina, the role of the choroidal layer in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR) is not yet understood. Our objective is to characterize macular and subfoveal choroidal thickness changes after cataract surgery in eyes with DR.
METHODS: Thirty-five eyes with clinically significant cataract of patients with DR were divided into three groups based on clinical and opti

PURPOSE: To investigate visual outcome, bacteriology, and time to diagnosis in groups identified as being at risk for endophthalmitis following cataract surgery.
SETTING: Swedish National Cataract Register.
DESIGN: A retrospective review of postoperative endophthalmitis and control cases reported from 2002 to 2010.
METHODS: Three identified risk groups for endophthalmitis confirmed in previous multivariate models were organized in such a way that the highest level of significance determined the allocation of cases that belonged to more than one group. Control cases of the entire database we

UNLABELLED: We describe 6 cases that developed intraocular inflammation between 42 days and 137 days after implantation of an acrylic foldable intraocular lens (IOL) (ISert model 251) and failed to respond to antibiotic treatment. One eye required a vitrectomy and IOL removal, 2 eyes required irrigation of the capsule, and 5 eyes required systemic administration of steroids. The healing process took 30 to 108 days after onset. Simultaneous with our cases was an epidemic outbreak of sterile anterior segment inflammation with the same characteristics associated with the same IOL. The clinical fe

AIMS: To investigate the visual and refractive outcomes, safety, efficacy and stability of cataract surgery in eyes with stable keratoconus.
METHODS: 17 eyes (10 patients) diagnosed as stable keratoconus, aged from 34 to 73 years (56.63 ± 12.47), underwent micro-incision cataract surgery (MICS) followed by implantation of toric intraocular lens (IOL). Seven of them were operated bilaterally and three unilaterally. A complete ophthalmological examination was performed preoperatively and postoperatively. The main outcome measures were: uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distan

PURPOSE: A randomized and double-blinded study design was implemented to assess the stereo-acuity in patients symmetrically implanted with four types of multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOLs), compared to a monofocal lens (control group). In addition, the influence of the type of test employed for the evaluation of stereo-acuity was explored.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six months after cataract intervention, stereo-acuity was measured with the Titmus and TNO stereotests in 143 patients implanted with one of the following MIOL lens types: hybrid spherical SN60D3, hybrid aspheric SN6AD1, diffractive

PURPOSE: Blue-yellow visual-evoked potentials (BY-VEPs) may be used for diagnostics of functional ganglion cell damage in glaucoma and other ocular diseases. In this study we investigated the impact of lenticular opacities on BY- and standard pattern reversal VEPs by examining patients before and after cataract surgery.
METHODS: Eighteen patients with moderate cataract were included in a prospective study. Transient on/off isoluminant blue-yellow 2° checks were used for short-wavelength stimulation (BY-VEP), transient large 1° (M1) and small 0.25° (M2) black-white checks for standard pattern

OBJECTIVE: To investigate vision-related quality of life (VRQoL) and associated factors in patients with cataracts and the outcomes of cataract surgery using the newly developed VRQoL instrument: the visual function questionnaire, 11-item Japanese version (the VFQ-J11).
METHODS: A total of 457 patients scheduled for cataract surgery at 12 clinical sites from November 2008 through February 2010 were included in the study. The patients completed the VFQ-J11 before and 3 months after surgery. The VFQ-J11 was used to investigate factors associated with VRQoL of the cataract patients, the outcome

PURPOSE: To evaluate the quality of vision and depth of focus induced by controlled amounts of negative spherical aberration in patients implanted bilaterally with light-adjustable intraocular lenses.
DESIGN: Prospective, nonrandomized clinical trial.
METHODS: Seventeen patients were implanted and treated with appropriate spatial irradiance light profiles. One eye was set for emmetropia, and the fellow eye received an additional aspheric light treatment to induce controlled amounts of negative spherical aberration. We used a Hartmann-Shack sensor to measure the eye's refraction and aberratio

PURPOSE: To evaluate the visual outcomes of patients with a new diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (IOL).
METHODS: A trifocal diffractive Fine Vision IOL (Physiol, Liege, Belgium) was implanted after microincision cataract surgery (MICS) in 40 eyes of 20 patients with bilateral cataract. The monocular and binocular visual performance and the refractive status were assessed, as well as the defocus curve and contrast sensitivity at 1 and 6 months postoperatively.
RESULTS: The monocular visual outcomes (logMAR) at 6 months postoperatively were uncorrected distance visual acuity 0.18 ± 0.13,

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the incidence of postoperative complications arising in the first year after trabeculectomy and combined phacotrabeculectomy in eyes with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) vs those with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of all glaucoma operations done at a Singapore hospital from January 9, 2001, to December 30, 2004. The types of glaucoma surgery included trabeculectomy and phacotrabeculectomy, all with mitomycin C or fluorouracil. The incidences of postoperative complications and reoperations were analyzed. INTRODUCTION: We introduce the use of low-molecular-weight silicone oil as an infusion and as a peroperative tool to facilitate three specific surgical steps, namely internal search for retinal breaks, vitreous base shaving and drainage of subretinal fluid.
METHOD AND PATIENTS: Ethics committee approval was obtained to test this novel agent in a small number of cases as a pilot study. Following vitrectomy the posterior retina was reattached and stabilised using perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL). The infusion of balanced salt solution was then stopped and replaced with 5 mPas silicone oil. Subsequ

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Monocular diplopia is an infrequent but disabling complication following laser peripheral iridotomy, or following cataract surgery. Our purpose is to clarify the intraocular mechanism of monocular diplopia (and binocular triplopia) of physical origin and its relation to the physiology and arrangement of the visual directions of the retinal areas in each eye.
CASE REPORTS: This is a report of one patient who developed monocular diplopia following an "exposed" laser peripheral iridotomy, and of a second patient who developed monocular diplopia due to a swollen opacified
