Association of asymptomatic otitis media with effusion in patients with adenoid hypertrophy.

Objective Clinical symptoms of otitis media with effusion are rarely brought forward to the guardians of young children who the disease is most prevalent in. This often leads to poor scholastic performances and difficult social interactions. The objective of this study was to identify asymptomatic cases of otitis media with effusion present in individuals with adenoid hypertrophy. Material and Methods In a cross sectional study advocated in Justice K.S.Hegde Hospital, Karnataka India we evaluated one hundred patients above the age of three from August 2016 to December 2017. Candidates who pres

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Maxillary Sinus with Isolated Trigeminal Anesthesia.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant secretory gland tumor. It is characterized by slow growth, long clinical course, local recurrences, and distant metastases. In the sinonasal tract, it most commonly arises in the maxillary sinus. It often presents at an advanced stage with perineural spread (PNS). Our patient presented with left-sided facial numbness without other symptoms. The numbness was localized to the left cheek, left side of nose, and left upper lip. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed an enhancing lesion involving the left maxillary sinus with orbita

Metastasis of adenoid cystic carcinoma from a submandibular gland to the larynx.

The present article discusses the first reported case of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) metastasis from a submandibular gland to the larynx. Both treatments of distant metastasis of ACC and secondary laryngeal tumor are challenging. Despite its slow progression, ACC is associated with high rates of local recurrence, distant metastasis, and poor prognosis. Patients with secondary laryngeal cancer often have other concurrent metastatic lesions. Therefore, treatment selection should consider the biological behavior of the tumor and characteristics of the laryngeal lesion, along with the general c

AKT3 drives adenoid cystic carcinoma development in salivary glands.

Salivary gland cancer is an aggressive and painful cancer, but a rare tumor type accounting for only ~0.5% of cancer cases. Tumors of the salivary gland exhibit heterogeneous histologic and genetic features and they are subdivided into different subtypes, with adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC) being one of the most abundant. Treatment of ACC patients is afflicted by high recurrence rates, the high potential of the tumors to metastasize, as well as the poor response of ACC to chemotherapy. A prerequisite for the development of targeted therapies is insightful genetic information for driver core c

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck: a retrospective multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck (ACCHN) is rare and difficult to study effective treatment at one institute. Our aim is to identify prognostic factors for this disease by conducting a multicenter study at 11 institutions in Japan. METHODS: A retrospective multicenter study of ACCHN was performed. One hundred and three patients were identified between 2006 and 2015. The overall survival (OS) rate for all patients was calculated, and OS, locoregional control (LRC) rate, or no distant metastasis (NDM) rate was calculated for patients in that the surgery was performed wi

[ADRENERGIC AND CHOLINERGIC INNERVATION OF THE PHARYNGEAL TONSILS IN CHILDREN WITH CHRONIC ADENOIDITIS].

Adrenergic and cholinergic innervation of the pharyngeal tonsil was studied in 50 children aged 4 to 14 years with chronic adenoiditis. that was removed during the operation from. The children were divided into 3 groups. The 1st group included children with decreased tone of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and autonomic hyperreactivity, the 2nd group — children with increased ANS tone and low autonomic reactivity, the 3rd group — children with optimal autonomic tone and normal reactivity. The state of the nervous structures in the region of adenoid overgrowths was studied by histochemical m

Laryngeal preservation in managing advanced tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma.

A 37-year-old male athlete was diagnosed with primary tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma following investigation for dyspnea, wheeze, and eventual stridor. Preoperative bronchoscopy revealed a highly vascular tumor 4 cm distal to the cricoid with no gross disease extending to the carina. Imaging revealed circumferential tracheal irregularity immediately inferior to the cricoid, with no definite cricoid invasion. Locoregional extension of disease was noted invading the thyroid and abutment of the carotid approximately 180°. Intraoperative findings identified tracheal mucosal disease extending di

Craniofacial skeletal pattern: is it really correlated with the degree of adenoid obstruction?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the cephalometric pattern of children with and without adenoid obstruction. METHODS: The sample comprised 100 children aged between four and 14 years old, both males and females, subjected to cephalometric examination for sagittal and vertical skeletal analysis. The sample also underwent nasofiberendoscopic examination intended to objectively assess the degree of adenoid obstruction. RESULTS: The individuals presented tendencies towards vertical craniofacial growth, convex profile and mandibular retrusion. However, there were no differences bet

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma of the eyelid and literature review.

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma (PCACC) is a rare malignant epithelial tumor most commonly observed in the scalp and skin of the chest and originating from the palpebral portion of the lacrimal gland in the orbit. Here we describe the diagnosis and treatment of a rare case of PCACC in an eye of a 52-year-old male. The patient presented with a mass lesion of the right lower eyelid. During incisional biopsy, lack of encapsulation and a secretion pattern different to that of chalazion was observed, which differentiated the lesion from chalazion. Pathological analysis revealed the diagn

Nasopharyngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma: a case report and review of the literature.

ACC derived from nasopharyngeal epithelial cells is rare, usually benign. In this article, we reported a nasopharyngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma (NACC) in a 31-year-old woman with a symptom of hoarseness, headache, epistaxis slightly, diplopia, facial numbness and dysphagia near 3 months. A tumor on the right side of the nasopharynx was confirmed by laryngoscope check and MRI of the skull base. Histopathological findings showed that tumor cells were arranged in cord-like or acinar-like by atypical hyperplastic epithelial cells forming a cribriform and tubular pattern, and immunohistochemical f

Early cutaneous metastasis of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the salivary glands is a malignant tumor characterized by slow but relentless progression that is plagued by local recurrence, late metastases, and ultimately fatal outcomes. Twenty-four percent to 52% of ACCs of the salivary glands result in distant metastasis, primarily involving the lungs, bones, liver, and brain. Cutaneous metastasis of these tumors is rare and usually represents an advanced stage of disseminated disease. We report the case of a 61-year-old man with a history of ACC of the right submandibular region who was referred to our dermatology clin

Microbiological profile of adenoid hypertrophy correlates to clinical diagnosis in children.

OBJECTIVE: Adenoid hypertrophy is a common condition in childhood, which may be associated with recurring acute otitis media (RAOM), otitis media with effusion (OME), and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). These different clinical characteristics have some clinical overlap; however, they might be explained by distinct immunologic and infectious profiles and result in various histopathologic findings of adenoid specimens. METHODS: A total of 59 children with adenoid hypertrophy undergoing adenoidectomy were studied. Three series of identical adenoid specimens were processed to hematoxyli

Clinicopathological study of distant metastases of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Most studies of the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of patients with distant metastasis of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC) have used small patient samples. To further explore this issue, a descriptive and prognostic study of 467 patients with SACC who were treated from 1963 to 2009 was conducted at a single institution. One hundred and forty-five patients (31.0%) had distant metastases. At least 20% of patients who presented with the early-stage disease and no recurrence developed distant metastasis. The overall 5-, 10-, and 20-year survival rates were 85.6%, 67.4%,

Adenoid cystic carcinoma mimicking an oroantral fistula: a case report.

Introduction Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is one of the most frequent malignant salivary gland tumors, which commonly affects the minor salivary glands of the mouth and is rare in the nose and paranasal sinuses. In the maxillary sinus, ACC can mimic inflammatory diseases and has a poor prognosis. Objective To report a case of a 50-year-old man with ACC of the maxillary sinus whose clinical findings in the alveolar ridge mimicked an oroantral fistula. Case Report An excisional biopsy was performed and histopathologic analysis revealed ACC. Lung metastases and residual tumor in the maxillary s

Outcomes of patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the minor salivary glands.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a tumour of glandular cells responsible for 10% of salivary gland neoplasms. It has a high rate of perineural spread but limited involvement of regional lymphatics even in late stage disease. Early survival is typically good (60-90%) although long term survival is poor with spread to distant sites in 40-60% of cases. The authors performed a retrospective review of clinical and pathological records for 24 patients managed by their institution over a 22-year period. The overall 5, 10 and 20-year survival rates in this study were 92%, 72% and 54%, respectively. Perineu

Medical treatment of adenoid hypertrophy with "fluticasone propionate nasal drops".

BACKGROUND: Adenoid hypertrophy treatment for children is generally planned in accordance with the degree of airway obstruction and related morbidity. If surgical treatment is indicated, the individual risk/benefit analysis of patients should be assessed in terms of anesthetic and postoperative complications. Although there are few alternative treatment options, these may be considered as a nonsurgical approach in less serious cases. Accordingly, studies about intranasal steroid applications under various protocols have been presented. STUDY DESIGN: The prospective, randomized, placebo-contro
