Achieving age-friendly cancer care through the NICHE practice model.

More than 50% of cancers occur in adults aged 70 years and older, and this population accounts for 60% of all cancer deaths. Cancer care for older adults is complex and influenced by comorbidities, age-related physiologic changes, social needs, and cognitive or functional limitations. This NICHE column addresses the alignment of the NICHE practice model and resources to advance evidence-based care of older adults with cancer in conjunction with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Age-Friendly 4Ms framework and international professional oncology nursing practice standards.

An overview of urinary incontinence in adults: assessments and behavioral interventions.

Urinary incontinence affects millions of Americans. Often the goal of treatment is to improve the condition, prevent complications and provide comfort. Behavioral interventions can improve the condition in 54-75% of patients with urge and/or stress incontinence and can cure 12-16% of patients. Advanced practice nurses (APNs) are in a unique position of both providing direct care to patients who experience these problems and educating other nurses about signs, symptoms and appropriate nursing interventions for urinary incontinence. The scope of the problem, costs of urinary incontinence and pot

Integrating Holistic Communication into Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies in Hospice and Palliative Care: An Approach Based on Peplau's Theory.

Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) has shown promising results in alleviating psychological and existential suffering among individuals with serious illnesses. In parallel, nursing offers a robust theoretical framework to guide therapeutic communication in this context. This article explores the application of Peplau's Theory of Interpersonal Relations (PTIR) as a foundation for holistic communication in PAT, particularly in hospice and palliative care. We examine how PTIR's core concepts (person, health, environment, and nursing) along with its articulation of therapeutic roles, phases of the

Pessary placement and management.

Female pelvic organ prolapse is a common and aggravating condition that few women openly discuss. Fortunately, nonsurgical and surgical treatment options exist for this condition. Nonsurgical treatments include pessaries, which are used to reduce prolapse. The type of pessary depends on the direction and extent or grade of the protruding organ. The use of vaginal pessaries for urinary stress continence is a relatively new treatment option. Proper fit that is determined by trial is essential for effectiveness. Nurses at all levels now need to be familiar with the use of the vaginal pessary for

Incision and Drainage of Acute Paronychia in the Emergency Department.

Paronychia is a common emergency department presentation, representing up to 35% of hand infections. Standard of care involves incision and drainage, with systemic antibiotic therapy dependent upon the severity of the presentation. The treating emergency nurse practitioner (ENP) should consider factors that may impact wound healing, medications, comorbidities, and perform a thorough history and physical examination to properly address this common infection. This article describes a case of a 43-year-old female with about four weeks of gradually developing paronychia that presented to a communi

Examining the Comfort and Knowledge of Nurse-Driven Palliative Care Screenings on Admission to the Neuro ICU.

Neurocritical intensive care unit (ICU) patients are not routinely screened for palliative care (PC) consultations. Unmet PC needs can delay establishing goals of care, increase the length of stay, and decrease patient and family satisfaction. Nurses can best advocate for appropriate PC referrals when given adequate resources and tools. Nurse-driven screening results in more appropriate PC recommendations. The project was a descriptive pre/post evidence-based practice intervention design. An electronic survey on comfort and knowledge of PC was distributed to neurocritical ICU nurses before and

Strategic communication to strengthen nurses' professional identity and drive cultural change in healthcare organizations: A JBI scoping review protocol.

Strategic communication plays a vital role in healthcare organizations undergoing continuous cultural transformation, yet its impact on reinforcing nurses' professional identity remains underexplored. Nurses' professional identity-how they perceive and enact their roles shaped by professional values and social interactions-is fundamental to job satisfaction, resilience, collaboration, and retention. This scoping review protocol outlines a study designed to systematically map and synthesize existing literature on the interaction between strategic communication, professional identity, and cultur

The use of leg elevation in the treatment of chronic peripheral oedema.

Chronic peripheral oedema is a common long-term condition, with conflicting evidence on how it is best managed. It is crucial to establish the cause of the oedema to decide on the most appropriate intervention for its management. If the oedema is not managed, it can lead to unwanted complications for the service user. The District Nurse (DN) is pivotal in the management of patients with long-term conditions, both directly and indirectly. It is important that a multi-disciplinary approach is used, although nurses are now more autonomous due to advances in practice. The present study focuses on

Breast cancer-related upper limb lymphoedema: an overview.

Breast cancer-related lymphoedema can be commonly encountered within a community nurse's role. The severity of lymphoedema can range considerably, from those who are considered 'at risk' due to breast cancer treatment, to individuals with highly complex oedema from advanced disease. This article provides an overview of breast cancer-related lymphoedema, including the risk factors for developing lymphoedema and the impact lymphoedema has physically, psychologically and socially. The treatments for lymphoedema, including clinical practical advice and skills, are presented to support ongoing pers

Is There a Role for Palliative Services and Supportive Care in Managing Advanced Penile Cancer?

OBJECTIVES: We aim to review the benefits of palliative care, describe why a palliative approach to care is needed for patients with advanced penile squamous cell carcinoma and propose ways in which oncology nurses can improve access to and provision of palliative care. DATA SOURCES: A review of the literature was performed and identified a range of randomized trials and systematic reviews regarding the benefits of palliative care in this patient group. Cohort studies of patients with penile cancer were used to describe the psychosocial and physical disease burden of penile cancer. CONCLUSIO

Neurological assessment.

Neurological system assessment is an important skill for the orthopaedic nurse because the nervous system has such an overlap with the musculoskeletal system. Nurses whose scope of practice includes such advanced evaluation, e.g. nurse practitioners, may conduct the examination described here but the information will also be useful for nurses caring for patients who have abnormal neurological assessment findings. Within the context of orthopaedic physical assessment, possible neurological findings are evaluated as they complement the patient's history and the examiner's findings. Specific neur

Delirium in German Nursing Homes - a qualitative study of care practice from the perspective of nurses and general practitioners.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a multifactorial and potentially life-threatening syndrome that remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in nursing homes, despite residents' high vulnerability due to advanced age, multimorbidity and cognitive impairment. To date, little is known how healthcare professionals perceive and manage delirium in these settings, particularly regarding prevention, diagnosis, therapy and interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as differentiation from other neurodegenerative diseases. This study explores the perspectives of nurses and general practitioners (GPs) on the quality o

Exploration of Factors That Influence Clinical Nurses' Active Engagement in Research and Evidence-Based Practice: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Nurses rely on current and relevant evidence to provide safe, high-quality care to patients and families. To do this, nurses need support to participate in research and evidence-based practice (EBP) activities. Despite the well-documented benefits of nurses' engagement in research and EBP, few actually do so in the clinical setting. This creates a knowledge-to-practice gap in which nursing evidence is not generated and existing evidence is often not applied in practice, jeopardizing the quality of care and patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this scoping review is to identify
