Carbon emissions, misallocation, and productivity in the cement industry: an empirical investigation.

The cement industry is a typical high-carbon and overcapacity sector. In the context of global climate change, identifying productivity loss driven by resource misallocation is essential for controlling CO2 emissions in the cement industry. We incorporate energy and CO2 emissions into the Hsieh and Klenow (2009) model (HK model), reconstruct the analytical framework through which resource misallocation affects productivity, and empirically evaluate the resulting productivity loss in Hunan Province's cement industry from 2016 to 2019. The results show that eliminating resource misallocation inc

Quaternary blended composite cement-a pathway to sustainable and circular construction.

The depletion of natural resources and the substantial carbon emissions associated with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) production pose critical environmental challenges to the construction sector. This study investigates the development of a sustainable quaternary blended cement system incorporating steel and iron industry by-products, i.e. Linz-Donawitz slag (LDS), ladle furnace slag (LFS), and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), in combination with OPC. Binder pastes were formulated with varying proportions of LDS and LFS, while maintaining OPC at 50% and GGBFS at 10% by mass. The

Time-Dependent Transition in the Re-Tempering Behavior of Cement Mortar.

Construction delays frequently reduce the workability of cement mortar, and re-tempering by adding extra water is commonly practiced to restore its fluidity. Although re-tempering improves fresh-state workability, it may simultaneously impair the hardened properties of mortar. This study investigated the combined effects of waiting time (0, 15, 30, and 45 min) and additional water content (0, 2, and 4% of the initial mixing water) on the fresh and hardened properties of cement mortar under controlled laboratory conditions. Mortar flow, compressive strength, and 28-day water absorption were eva

Delayed anterior cement and SpineJack device dislodgement after kyphoplasty.

A woman in her 70s who was experiencing thoracic back pain due to a T12 compression fracture was treated with successful T11-L1 kyphoplasty and T12 SpineJack-assisted augmentation. One week later the patient had significant anterior displacement of the SpineJack device and bone cement ventrally abutting the aorta. To remove the extruded bone cement and SpineJack device, she underwent lateral T12 retropleural corpectomy with posterior T11-L1 instrumented fusion with cement-augmented pedicle screws. The patient experienced significant improvement of her back pain with imaging demonstrating hardw

[Cement augmentation in pertrochanteric fractures : Evidence, indication and surgical application].

Cement augmentation of cephalomedullary implants was developed to improve anchorage of the head element in osteoporotic pertrochanteric fractures and to reduce implant-related failure patterns such as cut-out or excessive sliding. The aim of this review article is to provide a clinical classification of cement augmentation in pertrochanteric fractures, with particular focus on clinical and socioeconomic aspects. Biomechanical studies consistently demonstrate improved rotational stability and cut-out resistance of augmented cephalomedullary fixations. Clinically, several prospective studies sho

A mechanobiological hypothesis on bone cement-induced progression of bone metastases.

We propose the hypothesis that long-term alterations in the local biomechanical environment (a significant increase in stiffness and changes in stress distribution) induced by the implantation of bone cement for treating bone metastases may, by activating mechanotransduction pathways in tumor cells, potentially promote their proliferation, invasion, and therapy resistance, thereby affecting long-term disease progression. This effect is particularly noteworthy in specific patient populations with extended survival, low tumor burden, and radiosensitivity. For such patients without immediate stru

Unexpected Cement Fragment in the Heart: A Case Report of Intracardiac Embolism.

Intracardiac cement embolism (ICE) is a rare complication of vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. We present an unusual case of ICE in a 54-year-old woman following spinal surgery for osteodystrophy and osteomyelitis. Postoperative imaging revealed cement migration to the right atrium. Anticoagulation was initiated but discontinued due to bleeding. With no clear guidelines and high surgical risk, conservative management was pursued. This case highlights the importance of early recognition and the complexities of managing ICE in high-risk patients.

Cement Use in Bipolar Hemiarthroplasty and Its Association With Cancer Risk.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have been unable to confirm a direct relationship between polymethylmethacrylate use and cancer risk in hemiarthroplasty (HA) due to a lack of differentiation between cemented and cementless fixation in cancer risk assessment. This study aimed to clarify this by examining the incidence of cancer in patients who underwent cemented HA compared to those who received cementless HA. METHODS: This study was a retrospective nationwide cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, which represents nearly the entire Republic of Korea (South Kore

Nonlinear flow characteristics of cement grout in fractures with varying geometries.

The interplay between the non-Newtonian rheology of cement grout and fracture geometry exerts a critical influence on grout penetration efficiency and reinforcement performance in fractured rock masses. This study conducts a systematic investigation of the nonlinear flow behavior of cement grout in both tensile and shear fractures, utilizing theoretical analysis and numerical simulations across a range of fracture structures, apertures, and roughness levels. To capture the complex flow characteristics accurately, the Bingham-Papanastasiou model is employed as the rheological framework. Results

The cemented stem in hip arthroplasty - state of the art technique and recommendations.

The indication for femoral stem cementation should be made on a patient-specific basis, taking physical activity, femoral geometry, and bone tissue quality into account. Age alone should not be the sole justification for cementation. The Dorr classification can serve as decision support for whether a cemented fixation should be used. Femoral neck fractures should generally be cemented. Familiarize yourself with the applied stem philosophy. Force-closed stems typically have a polished surface that allows for subsidence, especially in the first 2 years postoperatively. Stems following the shape-…
