An aqueous extract from roasted seeds of Carum copticum (omum) has cholinomimetic effects. It shows muscarinic effects on rabbit duodenum, guinea-pig ileum and rat jejunum, and on the blood pressure of rat and cat. These effects are blocked by atropine. It also has a nicotinic action on the frog rectus preparation and atropinized cat blood pressure. Its effect is potentiated by physostigmine and antagonized by cholinesterase or alkalinization. Paper and gas chromatography have confirmed the presence of acetylcholine and choline in the roasted omum seed extract.

Quantification of sickle hemoglobin (HbS) in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) undergoing hydroxyurea or chronic transfusion therapy is essential to monitoring the effectiveness of these therapies. In this simple high-performance thin-layer chromatographic technique for evaluating porphyrin excretion, porphyrins rapidly extracted from urine or feces are separated on reversed-phase octadecylsilyl (C18)-bonded silica thin-layer chromatography plates. In this paper, the applicability of the quantitative ethanol detector (QED) test kit for screening of ethanol concentrations in blood samples was investigated. The pretreatment of blood using the sulfosalicylic acid solution and the three-way stopcock followed by membrane filtration gave satisfactory results. This paper describes a quantitative assay of 2-(2-thiophenecarboxy)benzoic acid and its systemic metabolites, namely salicylic acid and thiophenecarboxylic acid, by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection at 254 nm. Analytes were extracted from acidified samples with tert.-butylmethyl ether and separated with an RP-18 column (150 mm x 3 mm I.D., 5 microns particle size) with a mixture of 0.01 M potassium phosphate and methanol (70:30, v/v) at pH 3.1. The method proved to have the validation required for pharmacokinetic investigations in animals and humans.
