A critical review on the development for electro-osmotic dewatering (EOD) technology of sludge.

As a crucial step prior to the final treatment of sludge, sludge dewatering determines the subsequent transportation costs and the scale of treatment and disposal. Electro-osmotic dewatering technology of sludge drives the migration of water molecules through an applied external direct current electric field. In general, it does not require pretreatment or the addition of chemical agents, and has the advantages of compact equipment, simple operation, good dewatering effect and no secondary pollution. Its typical device consists of anodes/cathodes, pressure system, filtrate collection system, a

Development of a cost-effective method for platelet-rich plasma (PRP) preparation for topical wound healing.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a volume of plasma fraction of autologous blood having platelet concentrations above baseline whole-blood values due to processing and concentration. PRP is used in various surgical fields to enhance soft-tissue and bone healing by delivering supra-physiological concentrations of autologous platelets at the site of tissue damage. These preparations may provide a good cellular source of various growth factors and cytokines, and modulate tissue response to injury. Common clinically available materials for blood preparations combined with a two-step centrifugation pr

Choosing Wisely Canada climate-conscious recommendations for critical care medicine.

PURPOSE: The climate crisis represents the single largest threat to human health of the twenty-first century. The environmental footprint of providing critical care can be reduced if clinicians and administrators have guidance on how to do so safely. We sought to develop evidence-based recommendations to safely reduce the environmental footprint of critical care medicine. METHODS: A national Canadian multidisciplinary critical care medicine working group was convened to develop a list of climate-conscious recommendations for Choosing Wisely Canada. The working group developed and refined a li

A portable point-of-care testing device for forward blood typing with hemophilia diagnosis.

This paper presents a portable point-of-care testing (POCT) device to conduct simultaneous and on-site tests of ABO and Rh(D) forward blood typing and hemophilia diagnosis using only a small amount of human whole blood sample. The POCT device consisted of a spinning module, a measuring circuit, an interdigitated electrode (IDE) for hemophilia diagnosis, and three disposable microfluidic chips for bioassays with anti-A, anti-B, and anti-D, respectively, and measurement of the concentration of factor VIII. Agglutination will occur if red blood cells (RBCs) are exposed to the corresponding antibo

Isiris™ for Ureteric Stent Removal in Renal Transplantation: An Initial Single-Centre Experience of 150 Cases.

Background. Ureteric stent insertion is performed at the time of renal transplant to minimise the risk of post-operative urological complications, including anastomotic leak and ureteric stenosis or obstruction. Transplant ureteric stent removal (TUSR) has historically been performed via flexible cystoscopy, predominantly in a theatre setting. Isiris™ is a single-use cystoscope with integrated grasper designed for removal of ureteric stents. We report our initial experience. Methods. A retrospective analysis of a contemporaneously maintained database was performed with review of case notes fro

Disposable masks: Disinfection and sterilization for reuse, and non-certified manufacturing, in the face of shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic is posing a huge global health threat. To deal with this problem, in addition to research and work in the medical field, the main health measures being taken in the workplace and at home involve the establishment of safety protocols, which include distance measures, hygiene and the use of personal protective equipment, such as masks, etc. The WHO still does not recommend the use of masks for the general population. However, their successful use in China, South Korea and the Czech Republic has encouraged their widespread use, and the shortage that already existed. This has

Rapid Diagnostic Test Kit for Point-of-Care Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak Detection.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks can occur when there is communication between the intracranial cavities and the external environment. They are a common and serious complication of numerous procedures in otolaryngology, and if not treated, persistent leaks can increase a patient's risk of developing life-threatening complications such as meningitis. As it is not uncommon for patients to exhibit increased secretions postoperatively, distinguishing normal secretions from those containing CSF can be difficult. Currently, there are no proven, available tests that allow a medical provider concerned

Poly(amidoamine)-coated magnetic particles for enhanced detection of Schistosoma circulating anodic antigen in endemic urine samples.

Accurate and sensitive point-of-care diagnostic tools are critical for schistosomiasis control and elimination. The existing ultrasensitive lateral flow assay for the detection of Schistosoma circulating anodic antigen (CAA) has demonstrated excellent sensitivity but is time-consuming and requires significant laboratory infrastructure that limits its applicability at the point of care. To address this challenge, we sought to develop an alternative sample preparation method to concentrate CAA from large-volume urine samples requiring little-to-no laboratory equipment. The developed method relie

Passive Micropump for Highly Stable, Long-Termed, and Large Volume of Droplet Generation/Transport Inside 3D Microchannels Capable of Surfactant-Free and Droplet-Based Thermocycled Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reactions Based on a Single Thermostatic Heater.

It is still one key challenge for traditional passive micropumps (e.g., surface tension micropump, hydrostatic micropump, enzymatic micropump, degassed-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micropump, etc.) to transport a large volume of two-phased fluid for a long period. Herein we propose a user-friendly and passive approach to realize the microdroplet generation by waiving expensive or complex equipment. The automation principle is systemically studied in this paper. It is affirmed that this micropump can continuously transport over 2000 μL of two-phased aqueous/oil microdroplets over a 4 m long 3D m

Development of an automated blood sampling system for use in humans.

Many hormones are released in a pulsatile or burst-like pattern resulting in fluctuating blood levels that can undergo rapid modulation by physiological and pathological signals. To accurately measure these changes in hormone concentration requires frequent blood sampling, often over extended periods as the overall rhythmicity may vary over 24 hours. The aim of this study was to develop a computerized, automated blood sampling system which allows repeated stress-free blood sample collection from humans over an extended period under basal or test conditions. The system incorporates a peristalti

Magnetic positioning system and ultrasound guidance for lumbar zygapophysial radiofrequency neurotomy: a cadaver study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Chronic low back pain related to degenerative spondylosis is commonly managed by the radiofrequency ablation of sensory nerves. Fluoroscopic guidance has been considered mandatory to ensure placement of the active tip of the cannula parallel to the nerve to provide adequate neurolysis. Conversely, analgesic (or diagnostic) blockade is usually accomplished by placing the needle perpendicular to the nerve using either fluoroscopy or ultrasound (US) guidance. The recently introduced disposable equipment of internally cooled radiofrequency allows the denervation procedur…
