Diving into AI? Exploring the Potential for AI to Tackle Complex Water Quality Challenges.

Managing risks from water pollution is central to public health, environmental quality, and economic prosperity worldwide. While improvements in water quality have been attained in some parts of the world, much remains to be done to deliver clean rivers, lakes, and seas in line with public interest, changing regulatory landscapes, increasing awareness of risks from pollutants of emerging concern, and climate change. This Perspective explores the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to help tackle complex water quality challenges. We take a system-oriented approach to define a general pip

Underwater Suit-Wearing Cyborg Insect Capable of Hours-Long Diving and Terra-Aqua Travel.

The fundamental operational range of cyborg insects, which are hybrid robots that combine a living insect with an electronic controller, is inherently restricted to the host's natural environment. To extend their operational range, we developed a wearable diving suit for terrestrial insects. The suit integrates a miniaturised oxygen generation module with a flexible waterproof shell, enabling continuous oxygen supply and isolation from surrounding water. By fitting a cockroach, which is a terrestrial species, into this diving suit, we allowed it to survive and operate in oxygen-deprived enviro…

Return to an extreme environment exposure after pulmonary infection: SCUBA diving as a model?

The human body implements several adaptive mechanisms to perform in extreme environments. Increasingly, individuals return to such conditions after pulmonary infections, raising concerns about potential long-term respiratory consequences. This study aims to investigate the return to SCUBA diving after pulmonary infection, using COVID-19 as a model to provide evidence for safe reintegration into extreme environments, with a focus on vascular, oxidative and vascular stress. Twenty-three expert SCUBA divers who had symptomatic COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2 Alpha variant) were enrolled as studied group (CO…

Diving MCA and First-Pass Effect: A Subgroup Analysis From the ARISE II Study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of internal carotid artery tortuosity on achieving first-pass effect in mechanical thrombectomy has been described; however, middle cerebral artery (MCA) tortuosity remains understudied. We investigated the association of MCA tortuosity with radiographic and functional outcome using quantitative and qualitative measures. METHODS: The ARISE II study (Analysis of Revascularization in Ischemic Stroke With EmboTrap) was used to identify patients with anterior circulation stroke. MCA tortuosity was calculated using the Inflection Count Metric by 2 readers blinded to the angi

Underwater paddling kinematics and hydrodynamics in a surface swimming duck versus a diving duck.

Some duck species mostly swim on the water surface while others frequently dive underwater. We compared the paddling kinematics of mandarin ducks (Axis galericulata) that feed on the surface and diving ferruginous pochards (Aythya nyroca) that feed underwater. Both species were trained to perform the same horizontal, submerged swimming at 1 m depth in a controlled set-up. Mandarins used alternate foot paddling exclusively, while pochards varied their gait between alternate foot paddling and simultaneous paddling with both feet. Unlike mandarins, pochards swam with their body tilted at an angle…

Diving Deep: Profiling Exhausted T Cells in the Tumor Microenvironment Using Spectral Flow Cytometry.

Fresh tumor cytometric profiling is essential for interrogating the tumor microenvironment (TME) and identifying potential therapeutic targets to enhance antitumor immunity. Challenges arise due to the limited number of cells in clinical biopsies and inter-patient variability. To maximize data derived from a single biopsy, spectral cytometry was leveraged, enabling extensive profiling with significantly fewer cells than mass cytometry. Furthermore, the utilization of multiple markers within one tube can potentially reveal novel and extensive dynamic immune characteristics in cancer, thereby ai

Diving into Immersive Education: How Midwifery Students Experience 360-Degree Videos For Breastfeeding Support.

Midwifery students commonly lack confidence in supporting breastfeeding, which leads to greater reliance on mothers' autonomy. This research explores the acceptability and experiences of using 360-degree Virtual Reality (VR) video to teach midwifery students about breastfeeding support. Semi-structured interviews with 13 students generated three main themes: physical and technical challenges in VR use, shifting perspectives in education, and deep engagement through immersion. Initial findings suggest that immersive VR offers a positive and impactful learning experience.

Sensitivity of density estimates to off-axis beam pattern assumptions in deep-diving odontocetes.

Density estimation from passive acoustic monitoring requires knowledge of the sound production rates and signal characteristics of animal calls. This study explores the impact of the sound radiation pattern of echolocation clicks on density estimation for two deep-diving species, sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and dense-beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris). The likelihood of receiving a click from within the narrow half-power biosonar beam at a randomly positioned receiver is small, and the study demonstrates that the majority of clicks are likely to be detected from outside this mai…

Organic ultraviolet filters in the blubber of two free-ranging deep-diving cetacean species.

The increasing use of personal care products has led to the widespread of organic UV filters (oUVFs) in marine ecosystems, yet their occurrence and potential impacts on pelagic and deep-sea environments remain unclear. This study assessed oUVFs contamination in the blubber of two deep-diving cetacean species -the short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus)-off Madeira Island, Eastern North Atlantic. Using microwave-assisted extraction and UHPLC-MS/MS, four of eleven targeted oUVFs were detected in blubber: homosalate, 2-ethylhexyl salicyla…

Autonomic and physiological stress responses in navy divers: the protective role of diving experience.

INTRODUCTION: Deep diving presents significant physiological stress, yet reliable indicators for monitoring autonomic and stress responses remain underdeveloped. This study examined how prior deep diving experience influences autonomic regulation and stress biomarkers during a simulated dive to a depth of 220 feet. METHODS: Twenty-eight Navy divers (15 experienced, 13 novice) underwent psychological assessments (perceived stress, anxiety, fear) and salivary biomarker analysis (cortisol, amylase) pre- and post-dive. Heart rate variability (HRV), including linear (rMSSD, HF) and non-linear indi…

scRNA-seq of Penaeus japonicus hemocytes under environmentally-induced restriction of sand-diving behavior.

Penaeus japonicus is an economically important marine shrimp species, but its sand-diving habit affects the further improvement of their culture yield. To investigate the molecular response to the restriction of sand-diving behavior, we designed three culture systems: the sandy group, the sandless group, and the sandless stress group (transfer the individuals to a sandless pond after a week in the sandy group). First, we analyzed the expression differences of stress-related (HSP60) and circadian rhythm genes (period, timeless) at different time points after stress induction, identifying 6 h po…

Nasal trigeminal projections and medullary dorsal horn neuronal activation during voluntary diving in rats.

The diving response, an autonomic reflex characterized by apnea, bradycardia and increased peripheral vascular resistance, is initiated when animals submerge underwater. Neurons located within the trigeminal nucleus caudalis, specifically the ventral medullary dorsal horn (MDH), become activated and produce Fos after repetitive diving. It is assumed nerves innervating the nasal passages are important for activating these neurons during diving. The present study investigated the anatomical route by which nasal stimulation during diving can produce activation of MDH neurons. In rats trained to r…

Aquatic Sports Injuries: Biomechanics, Injury Patterns, and Imaging in Swimming, Water Polo, and Diving.

Aquatic sports, such as swimming, water polo, diving, and artistic swimming, combine endurance, strength, and flexibility with unique biomechanical demands, often leading to sport-specific injuries. Although water is a low-impact environment, the repetitive and high-intensity movements required in these disciplines increase the risk of both acute and overuse injuries. Swimmers frequently encounter shoulder overuse syndromes, water polo players face injuries from throwing and physical contact, and divers are at risk for spinal and wrist injuries during entry impacts. Imaging modalities, particu…

Physical and Physiological Predictors Determining the Maximal Static Apnea Diving Time of Male Freedivers.

This study aimed to investigate what factors determine freedivers' maximal static apnea dive time. We correlated some physical/physiological factors with male freedivers' maximum apnea diving duration. Thirty-six experienced male freedivers participated in this study. The divers participated in two days of the experiments. On the first day, apnea diving time, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), stress index, and blood parameters were measured before, during, and after the apnea diving in the pool. On the second day, body composition, lung capacity, resting and…

Diving into dual functionality: Swim bladder muscles in lionfish for buoyancy and sonic capabilities.

Although the primary function of the swim bladder is buoyancy, it is also involved in hearing, and it can be associated with sonic muscles for voluntary sound production. The use of the swim bladder and associated muscles in sound production could be an exaptation since this is not its first function. We however lack models showing that the same muscles can be used in both movement and sound production. In this study, we investigate the functions of the muscles associated with the swim bladder in different Pteroinae (lionfish) species. Our results indicate that Pterois volitans, P. radiata and
