INTRODUCTION: Bone fragility and disuse osteoporosis in commercial egg-laying chickens is a major welfare concern. Efforts to address this have focused on eliciting increases in bone mass during growth by raising chickens in more spacious and complex housing systems that motivate increased physical activity. However, it remains unclear how these bone adaptations influence in vivo bone mechanical behaviour in chickens, namely, whole-bone stiffness and strength.
METHODS: To investigate this, we sampled female chickens of two genetic strains (Lohmann Brown: brown-feathered, Lohmann LSL Lite: whi

Liancheng white ducks have a distinctive "white feathers, black beak, and green feet" phenotype, making them a useful model for studying pigmentation traits in waterfowl. The previous study found that the F1 generation of Liancheng white ducks crossed with white-feathered ducks and hemp-feathered ducks were all gray-black in color. This indicates the specificity and complexity of melanin deposition in Liancheng white ducks, which makes the selection and breeding of pigment traits through phenotyping difficult. The aim of this study was to investigate the candidate transcriptomic regulatory sig…

Infection dynamics data for influenza A virus in a species is important for understanding host-pathogen interactions and developing effective control strategies. Seven-week-old ostriches challenged with H7N1 low pathogenic viruses (LPAIV) or clade 2.3.4.4B H5N8 high pathogenic viruses (HPAIV) were co- housed with non-challenged contacts. Clinical signs, virus shed in the trachea, cloaca, and feather pulp, and antibody responses were quantified over 14 days. H7N1 LPAIV-infected ostriches remained generally healthy with some showing signs of mild conjunctivitis and rhinitis attributed to Mycopla

Methylmercury cycling in the Pacific Ocean has garnered significant attention in recent years, especially with regard to rising mercury emissions from Asia. Uncertainty exists concerning whether increases in anthropogenic emissions over time may have caused increased mercury bioaccumulation in the biota. To address this, we measured total mercury and, for a subset of samples, methylmercury (the bioaccumulated form of mercury) in museum feathers from an endangered seabird, the black-footed albatross (Phoebastria nigripes), spanning a 120-y period. We analyzed stable isotopes of nitrogen (δ(15)N…

1. The welfare of hens in 26 flocks (6 conventional cage, 6 furnished cage, 7 barn, 7 free-range) was assessed throughout the laying period using a combination of data on physical health, physiology and injurious pecking, collected by researchers on farm and during post-mortem analysis, and information submitted by producers. 2. There was an effect of housing system on 5 of the indicators recorded by researchers: gentle feather pecks given, feather damage score, proportion of hens with feather damage, proportion of the flock using perches, and faecal corticosterone. 3. Post-mortem analysis rev

Sexual dimorphism in immune function influences disease susceptibility, yet sex-specific immune characteristics in chickens remain poorly understood, particularly across genetically divergent lines. This study investigated sex- and line-dependent differences in the peripheral and lymphatic immune system in lines selected for high and low feather pecking. Immune cell subsets were quantified in blood, spleen and cecal tonsils, and functional immune parameters were analyzed by measuring plasma antibody concentration and mitogen-induced lymphocyte proliferation capacity. Distinct immunological dif

Hyperpigmentation of the visceral peritoneum (HVP) has been becoming one of the most challenging problems in yellow-feathered chicken production, which seriously affected chicken carcass quality traits. Detecting which genes dominantly impact pigmentation in the peritoneum tissues is of great benefit to the genetic improvement of HVP. To investigate the genetic mechanism of HVP in yellow-feathered broilers, genome-wide association studies (GWASs) were conducted in the F2 generation of a cross broiler population with 395 birds. A total of 115,706 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 122,41

The egg industry is moving away from the use of conventional cages to enriched cage and noncage laying hen housing systems because of animal welfare concerns. In this study, the prevalence and severity of lesions in noncage laying hens from commercial farms in two of the largest egg-producing states, California and Iowa, were evaluated by postmortem examination. Hens that died or were culled were collected during early, mid, and late stages of the laying cycle from 16 houses on three farms. Of the 25 gross lesions identified for study, 22 were observed, with an average of four lesions per hen.

The concept of bioprospecting for bioactive peptides from keratin-containing materials such as wool, hair, skin and feathers presents an exciting opportunity for discovery of novel functional food ingredients and nutraceuticals, while value-adding to cheap and plentiful natural sources. The published literature reports multiple examples of proline-rich peptides with productive bio-activity in models of human disease including tumour formation, hypertension control and Alzheimer's disease. Bioactive peptides have been identified from food and other protein sources however the bioactivity of ker…

To develop a suitable biomonitor of metal pollution in watersheds, we examined trends in exposure to nine trace elements in the diet (benthic invertebrates and fish), feathers (n = 104), and feces (n = 14) of an aquatic passerine, the American dipper (Cinclus mexicanus), from the Chilliwack watershed in British Columbia, Canada. We hypothesized that key differences may exist in exposure to metals for resident dippers that occupy the main river year-round and altitudinal migrants that breed on higher elevation tributaries because of differences in prey metal levels between locations or possible…

A gray-cheeked parakeet, approximately 3 years of age, was submitted for necropsy. Clinical signs included diarrhea, decreased feed consumption, fluffing of feathers, shivering, weight loss, and limping. Necropsy revealed enlargement and pale discoloration of the spleen and intestines. The liver contained multifocal pale foci. Granulomas, some of which had necrotic centers, were present along the subserosa of the intestinal tract. Microscopic examination revealed diffuse granulomatous splenitis, enteritis, and multifocal granulomatous hepatitis. Numerous acid-fast bacteria were demonstrated in…

A new keratinase producer, Bacillus sp. BK111, isolated from a poultry feather was identified as Bacillus zhangzhouensis, which is the first report for its keratinolytic activity. The keratinase production was optimized, followed by the enzyme purification and characterization using biochemical assays. A 2.34-fold increase was observed in the enzyme production under optimized conditions. The enzyme was characterized as a serine protease with 42 kDa molecular weight, stable in a wide range of temperature and pH with maximum keratinolytic activity at 60 °C and pH 9.5. The enzyme had a wide range

We report a case of bird-related chronic hypersensitivity pneuminitis exhibiting the fluctuation of serum markers for interstitial lung disease along with the changes in life environment. A 65-year-old man had had an abnormal chest radiograph for 2 years and had complained of a non-productive cough. He had had 30 parakeets 20 years previously and had used feather products for 15 years. In autumn and early winter wild birds had visited persimmons trees in the neighboring garden. Antibodies to bird-related antigens in the broncho-alveolar lavage fluids and sera were positive and the thoracoscopi

A mutant line of chickens (DAM line) has been developed that is characterized by a high incidence of a spontaneous, postnatal, cutaneous amelanosis. Amelanotic individuals also have a high incidence of blindness and a low incidence of an integumentary defect expressed as a variable loss of feathers. A low incidence of hypothyroidism is also present but is not limited to the amelanotic phenotype. All line associated traits appear to be controlled by multiple autosomal genes. Selection experiments showed that the amelanosis and eye defect are highly heritable and partially share a common genetic…

Japanese cormorants (Phalacrocorax capillatus) used for traditional Ukai fishing are captured exclusively from the Ishihama coast in Hitachi City, Japan. Despite the long cultural history of this practice, information on trace element exposure in these birds remains limited. This study analyzed the elemental composition of feathers to assess environmental exposure and potential health risks in cormorants used for Ukai fishing. Feather samples were collected from wild cormorants captured in spring and autumn, as well as from captive individuals. Concentrations of ten elements (Al, Cr, Mn, Cu, Z…

Birds are well known for their ability to fly, and flight-capable adult birds have many anatomical specializations for meeting the demands o … of flight within weeks. Compared with adults, juvenile chukars have less aerodynamically effective feathers and smaller muscles but compensate through anatomical, kinematic, and behavioral mechanisms. In contrast, waterfowl have delayed wing development and initially rely on leg-based locomotion. In Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and their domesticated der …

A hatch-year Swainson's Hawk (Buteo swainsoni) recovered from Modoc County, California, US, on 12 August 2012 had malformations of the rear limbs consisting of bilateral polymelia and syndactyly. We describe the malformations and evaluate potential causes. Postmortem examination revealed varus rotation of both femurs and abnormal appendages originating from the distal medial surface of the tibiotarsi with two nonfunctional digits on the right leg and one digit on the left leg. There was syndactyly between digits III and IV of both feet. Avian pox viral dermatitis was present on the skin of the
