Exploring the functional and anatomical bases of mirror-image and anatomical imitation: the role of the frontal lobes.

Humans are the most imitative species on earth, but how imitation is accomplished and which areas of the brain are directly involved in different kinds of imitation is still under debate. One view is that imitation entails representing observed behaviours as a set of hierarchically organised goals, which subsequently drive the construction of an action pattern [Bekkering, H., Wohlschläger, A., & Gattis, M. (2000). Imitation of gestures in children is goal-directed. The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, 53, 153-164; Wohlschläger, A., Gattis, M., & Bekkering, H. (2003). Action genera

Impairment of motor function after frontal lobe resection with preservation of the primary motor cortex.

We investigated the clinical course and characteristics of the motor deficits in patients who underwent surgical resection of the frontal lobe for tumorous lesions. Only patients who met the following criteria were included in the present study: 1) postoperative MRI revealed that resection of the frontal lobe involved the area closely adjacent to the primary motor cortex, but 2) the D wave of the corticospinal MEP did not decrease in amplitude below 50% of the original level during surgery. The extent of resection was classified into 4 groups. In Group A (6 cases), resection was limited within…

Arachnoid cyst of the frontal part of the temporal lobe producing exopthtalmos CT and MRI evaluation.

Twenty-three patients with an arachnoid cyst in the frontal part of the temporal bone, which produced exopthtalmos, were evaluated with CT and MRI. The majority of the patients had the peak of the bowing of the bony orbit wall in the posterior third (20/23) and only three in the middle. Arachnoid cyst are classified as small (13/23), medium (5/23) or large (5/20) size. Exopthtalmos are also classified as mild, moderate or large. CT and MRI clearly revealed the exopthtalmos, the bone remodelling process and the relationship of the orbit muscles, optic nerve and posterior bony wall of the orbit.

31P-spectroscopy of frontal lobe in schizophrenia: alterations in phospholipid and high-energy phosphate metabolism.

Studies using 31P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) reported on abnormalities in frontal lobe metabolism in schizophrenia. The most consistent findings were a reduction in the resonances of phosphomonoesters (PME) and/or increased phosphodiesters (PDE), which are, respectively, the precursors and the metabolites of membrane phospholipids, thus suggesting an accelerated phospholipid metabolism in the disease. Other studies reported increased high-energy phosphates (ATP-adenosine triphosphate and PCr-phosphocreatine) in schizophrenia, reflecting decreased use of energy in the frontal lobe. W…

Spatial working memory in Asperger's syndrome and in patients with focal frontal and temporal lobe lesions.

Spatial working memory (SWM) was investigated in 15 patients with Asperger's syndrome (AS) comparing their performance to 18 age- and IQ-matched control subjects. An additional comparison was made with 20 unilateral frontal excision patients [9 right (RFL); 11 left (LFL)] and with 38 unilateral temporal lobectomy patients [18 right (RTL); 18 left (LTL)], the frontal and temporal lobe patients having separate matched control groups. SWM was tested using the Executive Golf Task, a test that also measures spatial strategy formation. The AS group showed a substantial deficit on SWM, but no impairm

Cognitive and behavioral differentiation of frontal lobe degeneration of the non-Alzheimer type and Alzheimer's disease.

Neuropsychological differences between 14 patients with a clinical diagnosis of frontal lobe degeneration of non-Alzheimer type (FLD) and 15 patients with a clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) were studied. The most efficient psychometric predictors of FLD were Digit Symbol, estimation tasks, word list recall, and particularly the FAS word fluency test. Behavioral predictors of FLD and AD showed a double dissociation: regression and impulsivity characterized FLD, whereas lack of motivation and slowness were typical of AD. Cognitive and behavioral differences between groups were not …

Comparison of scalp electroencephalogram with subdural electrocorticogram recordings and functional mapping in frontal lobe epilepsy.

We compared the findings of scalp electroencephalogram with subdural electrode array (SEA) recordings in 19 patients with refractory frontal lobe epilepsy. Prolonged scalp interictal recordings localized the epileptogenic zone in 12 patients; seven had no interictal sharp waves. The SEAs showed multifocal interictal sharp waves in all patients. Seven patients with localized seizure onset on scalp recording showed extensive ictal onset on the SEA recording. Five patients with lateralized seizure onset to one hemisphere on scalp recording were found to have ictal onset on SEA restricted to a sma…

Frontal lobe functions in attention deficit disorder with and without hyperactivity: a review and research report.

We review 22 neuropsychological studies of frontal lobe functions in children with attention deficit disorder with and without hyperactivity (ADD/+H, ADD/-H). Some measures presumed to assess frontal lobe dysfunctions were not reliably sensitive to the deficits occurring in either form of ADD. Tests of response inhibition more reliably distinguished ADD/+H from normal children. Where impairments were found on other tests between ADD and normal subjects, they were highly inconsistent across studies and seemed strongly related to age of the subjects and possibly to the version of the test employ…

The Impact of High-Altitude Acclimatization on Frontal Lobe Executive Function: The Mediating Effect of Creatinine.

OBJECTIVE: High-altitude hypoxia impairs frontal executive functions. This study examines whether serum creatinine (CR) mediates the relationship between altitude acclimatization (AAI) peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2)/hematocrit (HCT) ratio and frontal neural oscillations. METHODS: In 190 adults at 3,650 m (Lhasa), we measured SpO2, hematocrit, CR, and resting-state frontal electroencephalography. Power spectral density was calculated across multiple frequency bands (1-80 Hz) and Z-standardized. Mediation analysis with bootstrap tested the indirect effect of AAI on each band via CR. RESUL

Influence of an improvement in frontal lobe hemodynamics on neurocognitive function in adult patients with moyamoya disease.

BACKGROUND: In adults, moyamoya disease (MMD) often presents with slight neurocognitive impairment, which may result from frontal lobe hemodynamic insufficiency. METHODS: In this study, we performed revascularization surgery by superficial temporal artery-anterior cerebral artery (ACA) direct bypass in 20 adults with MMD with poor anterograde ACA flow (Group M). The pre- and postoperative neurocognitive test results of these patients were retrospectively analyzed. The comparative group (Group C) included 23 patients with unruptured aneurysms or brain tumors who underwent craniotomy, as well a…

Behavior of olfactory-related frontal lobe oscillations in Alzheimer's disease and MCI: A pilot study.

Slow-gamma (35-45 Hz) phase synchronization and the coupling between slow-gamma and low-frequency theta oscillations (4-8 Hz) are closely related to memory retrieval and cognitive functions. In this pilot study, we assess the Phase Amplitude Coupling (PAC) between theta and slow-gamma oscillatory bands and the quality of synchronization in slow-gamma oscillations using Phase Locking Value (PLV) on EEG data from healthy individuals and patients diagnosed with amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) during an oddball olfactory task. Our study indicates noticeable d

Sex-specific cognitive effects of mild traumatic brain injury to the frontal and temporal lobes.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits are the most enduring and debilitating sequelae of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). However, relatively little is known about whether the cognitive effects of mTBI vary with respect to time post-injury, biological sex, and injury location. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the side and site of mTBI and to determine whether these effects are sexually dimorphic. METHODS: Male and female ICR mice were subjected to either a sham procedure or mTBI to the temporal lobes (right-sided or left-sided) or to the frontal lobes (bilateral) usi…

Frontal lobe development in fetuses with growth restriction by using ultrasound: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) occurs in up to 10% of pregnancies and is a leading cause of perinatal mortality and neonatal morbidity. Three-dimensional ultrasonography of intracranial structure volume revealed significant differences between fetuses with FGR and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) fetuses. We aimed to compare the frontal lobe development between fetuses with FGR and appropriately grown fetuses and evaluate the impact of fetal circulatory redistribution (FCR) on frontal lobe development in fetuses with FGR. METHODS: We performed a case-control study at our inst…
