The gobioid fishes of India-An annotated list.

The gobioid fishes of India have been misidentified and misunderstood for many years; there are over 250 nominal species recorded so far, plus many for which we were unable to confirm identity or presence in India. A look at much of the Indian literature on these fishes shows a confusion of names, with some species being endemic, some species widespread, and many misidentified. The taxonomy of many Indo-Pacific gobioid genera and species is still not understood. The rise of social media and citizen science is assisting in documenting these fishes, but much work remains to be done. Increased co…

The everyday ethics in sterilization camps in India.

This ethnographic paper examines how various professionals working within sterilization camps in India engage with everyday ethics. While sterilization in India-and its place within India's population control programme historically entrenched in overtly and covertly coercive measures-gathers significant ethical concern in the scholarly and activist circles, extensive ethnographic engagement within sterilization camps in rural Rajasthan in 2012-2013 demonstrates that biomedical and bureaucratic personnel involved in the organisation of the camps are not preoccupied with dramatic ethical conside…

Continuum of Care for Hemophilia: The Story of India.

Hemophilia A and hemophilia B are disorders of coagulation caused by deficiency of clotting factors VIII and IX respectively. Genes for both these factors are on X chromosome and are prototypes of X-linked recessive disorders, manifesting only in males. Taken together, they are one of the commonest monogenic disorders in the world and appear to be equally prevalent in India. Diagnosis and treatments have been available for decades and have evolved over time. The story of successful gene therapy is as important as the dramatic changes occurring in the quality of life of hemophilia patients in I…

Challenges in disability certification in psychiatry in India.

This viewpoint draws attention to the disparities that exist between the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and the facilities that are available to specialists on the digital platform of certification for mental illnesses to address the severity of the impairment. It also recognizes that the lack of clear rules makes it difficult to reevaluate both single and multiple disabilities. The process of disability certification is further complicated by other factors, including inadequate training of medical professionals and clerical staff, server associated delays as well as the lack of

Building Momentum for a Malaria-Free India.

India's National Malaria Elimination Program, which achieved notable success in reducing cases, is now facing challenges because of the rise in malaria cases in 2023 and 2024. This increase is linked to multiple factors, including disruptions in healthcare priorities during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, drug and insecticide resistance, and the under-detection of asymptomatic carriers and pfhrp2-deleted parasites. The ultimate goal is to achieve sustainable reductions in malaria incidence and transmission, paving the way for a malaria-free India by 2030.

Rickettsial infections are emerging and/or re-emerging disease that poses a serious global threat to humans and animals. OBJECTIVE: To examine the hypertension care continuum in India among individuals aged 18 to 98 years. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The nationally representative Fifth National Family Health Survey study was conducted in 2 phases fro…
