A symmetric four-cone converging photoacoustic (PA) cell with dual-frequency resonance is proposed for the simultaneous measurement of two gases. The resonance tubes are designed as conical frustums rather than conventional cylinders reducing cell volume. Finite element optimization equalizes the amplitudes of the two resonance peaks at 2850 and 4220 Hz. A high-sensitivity cantilever transducer is used to transmit the PA signals to a fiber-optic demodulator. The operating frequencies of the two lasers are each locked to half of their respective resonant frequencies. A dual-channel digital lock

Wearable sensors hold significant potential for managing lower-limb dysfunction in neurological disorders, but current systems remain constrained by unimodal sensing, external power dependence, and limited diagnostic capabilities. Here, we present a wireless wearable dual-mode sensor (WDMS) integrating three polyurethane-based flexible optical strain (PFOS) components with a contact-separation mode triboelectric nanogenerator (CS-TENG). The PFOS components are used for muscle signal monitoring, while the CS-TENG simultaneously monitors plantar pressure and harvests biomechanical energy to powe

This study introduces a novel spiral-resonant photoacoustic cell (SR-PAC) for high-sensitivity trace gas detection. This SR-PAC consists of a cylindrical photoacoustic cell (PAC) coupled with a helical resonator tube coiled around its exterior, with a compact total volume of 1.4 cm3. This design ensures the compact size of the cylindrical PAC while retaining the high sensitivity characteristics of a resonant PAC. The resonance frequency of the SR-PAC was calculated theoretically and verified through finite element analysis and experiments, with the results showing high consistency. By matching

Heterodyne dynamic light scattering is a powerful interferometer allowing determination of velocities and directions of nano-sized objects that are too small to be tracked using conventional optical microscopy. Here, their scattered signal is directly mixed in optical fibers with that of a local oscillator (LO) originating from the same laser source, thus offering easy and precise control of the LO reference signal and high detection sensitivity over the entire range of scattering vectors. In this paper, we detail the expression of the heterodyne intensity correlation functions, which depend b…

To address the demand for flow-induced vibration monitoring of steam generator heat transfer tubes in pressurized water reactors under high-temperature (350 °C) and high-pressure (17.5 MPa) conditions, a fiber-optic Fabry-Pérot interferometric accelerometer based on a composite Fabry-Pérot cavity structure is proposed. The sensor employs a symmetrically arranged multidirectional cantilever beam and a central proof mass to effectively reduce cross-axis sensitivity. Using a MEMS-based fabrication process, a three-layer sensing chip with a composite cavity is formed, mitigating the temperature dr

Isopropanol (IPA), a volatile organic compound linked to diabetic ketosis (DK), has emerged as a critical biomarker for early diabetes detection and management. Developing portable, room-temperature sensors for exhaled IPA analysis could enable non-invasive, point-of-care diagnostics. Here, we present a compact, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) fiber-optic sensor functionalized with Pt-doped ZnO nanoparticles for ultrasensitive IPA detection at room temperature. This material design amplifies the sensing performance through a synergetic effect of the catalysis of oxygen chemisorption on the ZnO

Kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM-1) is a promising biomarker for early diagnosis of various kidney diseases such as acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. This study introduces a fiber-optic biosensor based on a semi-distributed interferometer (SDI) designed for direct measurement of KIM-1 in human urine specimens. The biosensor demonstrated exceptional sensitivity and specificity to KIM1 protein, and the KIM-1-functionalized sensor significantly surpassed the control sensors with optimal responses in both artificial and abnormal urine samples. The response of the SDI biosensor to KIM-1

Photoacoustic (PA) gas sensing technology is well known for its high sensitivity. However, the sensitivity decays when detecting carbon dioxide because of the long vibrational-translational (V-T) relaxation time. In this work, we systematically exploited and optimized a leaky hollow-core fiber (LHCF)-based all-optical low-frequency resonant photoacoustic gas sensor via theoretical modeling, finite element analysis, and experimental validation. An optimized LHCF-PA gas sensor with an operation frequency of 1020 Hz was constructed to limit the influences from the long V-T relaxation time. The to

A D-Shaped, excessively tilted fiber grating (ExTFG) immunosensor modified with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) was developed for label-free and specific detection of growth-stimulated expressed gene 2 protein (ST2), a critical biomarker for heart failure. The D-Shaped ExTFG sensor was fabricated by side-polishing an ExTFG along its slow axis to enhance refractive index (RI) sensitivity. It was subsequently biofunctionalized with MoS2 and anti-ST2 monoclonal antibodies (anti-ST2 MAbs) for ST2 immunoassays. The RI sensitivities of the sensor after side-polishing and MoS2 coating were thoroughly inv

The sol-gel transition of resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) solutions in the presence of sodium carbonate as a catalyst was monitored using in-line UV-vis measurements in real time by observing the absorbance changes at various gelation temperatures using a fiber-optic probe. The two absorbance maxima at around 340-400 and 500 nm were caused by different resorcinol derivatives and O-quinone methide intermediates, respectively, which were formed during the gelation. The absorbance was measured until visible turbidity appeared. The turbidity time (t turb) was determined, and it was found to decrease

Techniques for monitoring calcium carbonate and silica deposits (scale) in geothermal power plants and hot spring facilities using fiber optic sensors have already been reported. These sensors continuously measure changes in light transmittance with a detector and, when applied to field tests, require the installation of a power supply and sensor monitoring equipment. However, on some sites, a power supply may not be available, or a specialist skilled in handling scale sensors is required. To overcome this problem, we have developed a method for evaluating scale formation that is based on a ba

Detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is crucial in industrial production, environmental monitoring, and public safety. VOCs sensors need to be intrinsically safe, given the flammability and toxicity of common VOCs. Fiber optic sensors offer a passive and flexible solution for VOCs detection, attracting significant attention from researchers. In this study, ZIF-8, a subset of metal-organic frameworks, is applied to a side-polished silicon wafer, forming an open-cavity optical fiber Fabry-Pérot interferometer (FPI) with a fiber patch cable and a 3D-printed structural part. The sensing

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the diagnostic ability of macula retinal nerve fiber layer (mRNFL) thickness in preperimetric glaucoma (PPG) patients.
METHODS: This prospective study included 83 patients with PPG and 83 age- and refractive error-matched normal control subjects. PPG was defined as a localized RNFL defect corresponding to glaucomatous optic disc changes with a normal visual field test. We used spectral-domain (SD) optical coherence tomography (OCT) to measure the circumpapillary RNFL (cpRNFL) thickness and macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness. Linear regression of optical coherence tomography measurements of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness is often used to detect glaucoma progression and forecast future disease course. However, current measurement frequencies suggest that clinicians often apply linear regression to a relatively small number of measurements (e.g., less than a handful). In this study, we estimate the accuracy of linear regression in predicting the next reliable measurement of average retinal nerve fiber layer thickness using Zeiss Cirrus optical coherence tomography measurements of average retinal ne
