TORP ossiculoplasty in the presence of an intact stapes superstructure.

INTRODUCTION: In this series, we describe ossicular reconstruction using routine TORP in the presence of the stapes superstructure using a tympanic-membrane-to-footplate configuration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a case series of 12 patients who underwent TORP ossiculoplasties from 1st January 2010 to 31st October 2017. Data collected included demographics, indication for surgery, status of the middle ear and pre-operative and post-operative audiometric data (including pure tone average (PTA) and air-bone gap (ABG)). RESULTS: The mean pre-operative PTA was 56.5 dB and ABG was 39.8 dB. Sur

Lysis of the long process of the incus secondary to Vibrant SounBridge® middle ear implants, treated with hydroxyapatite bone cement.

We report two patients presenting with delayed complicationsafter Vibrant SounBridge® middle ear implant surgery: in both cases, a revision surgery was performed and lysis of the long process of the incus was highlighted. A re-assembly of the clip around the remaining long process of the incus was performed, associated with hydroxyapatite bone cement application, on the clip and the incudo-stapedial joint. Both patients had a satisfying result, with a mean follow up of 12 months.

Morphometric evaluation of middle ear anatomical structures using full volume (12 × 9) CBCT scans: A retrospective study in Navi Mumbai.

INTRODUCTION: The tympanic cavity contains three tiny bones, the malleus, incus, and stapes, which have a fundamental role in the transmission of sound. Recent research emphasizes the use of CBCT for the anatomic study of the temporal bone. The information about middle ear anatomy on CBCT scans is meager; hence, this retrospective study was conducted to identify and determine the various morphometrical parameters of the malleus using CBCT which can be helpful during reconstructive procedures for the otologic surgeon. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The retrospective study was performed on 200 subjects

A Rare Cause of Stapedotomy Failure: When the Depth Marker Becomes a Locking Device: A Report on 2 Cases.

We report 2 cases of stapes surgery failure due to the depth marker groove of the piston of a Big Easy titanium prosthesis getting caught at the edge of the stapedotomy hole. In the first case, the stapedotomy failure, detected peroperatively, was corrected by modifying the angulation of the shaft of the prosthesis. In the second case, the failure occurred after a delay during which scar tissue developed around the depth marker groove, hampering the movement of the prosthesis. The usual postoperative imaging did not detect this complication. The diagnosis was made during revision surgery and t

Effect of Titanium Artifacts on Cholesteatoma in Magnetic Resonance Imaging After Reconstruction of the Middle Ear.

Background/Objectives: Surgical removal is the treatment of choice for cholesteatoma control. Depending on the size, the surgery involves partial resection of the ossicular chain and, if necessary, the bony skull base. Titanium foreign materials (prostheses, meshes) can be used to restore sound transmission and to cover larger defects of the skull base. After the operation, recurrence and residual control are necessary. This can be achieved by means of second-look surgery or an MRI examination with a non-EPI DWI sequence. Similarly to other metal implants, artifacts may occur in the image due

Coupled Finite Element Model of the Middle and Inner Ear as Virtual Test Environment for Stapes Surgery.

In order to evaluate the performance of different types of middle-ear prostheses, a model of human ear was developed. The model was created using finite element (FE) method with the ossicles modeled as rigid bodies. First, the middle-ear FE model was developed and validated using the middle-ear transfer function measurements available in literature including pathological cases. Then, the inner-ear FE model was developed and validated using tonotopy, impedance, and relative BM motion level curves from literature. Both models are based on preexisting research with some improvements and were comb

[Differential indication of active middle ear implants].

INTRODUCTION: Hearing aids (HA) provide adequate support for many patients with hearing loss, but not all. Around one third of 10.000 patients provided with hearing aids in the Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit felt no actual benefit when using the hearing aid, although they demonstrated the necessary hearing improvement on speech audiometry. Epidemiological data show bad compliance, especially in older people. Only one in three hearing aid owners wears their device regularly. For this subpopulation of patients active middle ear implants (AMEIs) have been used since 1998. In the prese
