An exploratory study of the relationship of symptom domains and diagnostic severity to PET scan imaging in borderline personality disorder.

The purpose of this report is to describe the relationship between clinical rating assessments of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and regional brain metabolism as measured by positron emission tomography with fluorodeoxyglucuse-F18 (PET-FDG). Fourteen women with BPD underwent PET-FDG scanning in a medication-free state. Correlations were performed on a voxel-by-voxel basis with Buss-Durkee Hostility Index (BDHI) and the Zanarini Rating Scale for Borderline Personality Disorder (ZAN-BPD) which provides a score for BPD severity. There was a significant negative correlation between glucose

Fracture risk in patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance.

Little information is available on the risk of fractures in patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). We identified 1535 patients with MGUS between 1978 and 2003 in North Jutland County, Denmark. The population control group consisted of 15 350 persons selected from the Danish Central Population Registry, matched by age and sex. Data on fractures in the two groups were obtained from the regional Hospital Discharge Registry. In the MGUS cohort, 187 first-time fractures were identified during 9754 person-years of follow-up, corresponding to an incidence rate of 19/

When legal worlds collide: from research to treatment in hereditary cancer prevention.

This paper critically examines the legal and ethical dilemma in the institutionalization of a prevention and treatment technology on hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) in Finland. Current medical practice and legislation support the notion of non-directiveness in genetic counselling, patient autonomy and personal privacy. Clinical doctors in Finland, however, proposed that a research register of HNPCC carriers should be nationalized through a legal mandate, which would require all carriers to be identified on the basis of the mutation, but also provide a national healthcare and

Brightness-sense and optic nerve disease.

We describe a simple device used to compare the sense of brightness in the two eyes. An investigation of brightness-sense with this device in normal persons and patients with optic nerve disease, maculopathies, cataract, and factitious visual impairment shows that brightness testing can provide useful information supplementary and complementary to conventional clinical and laboratory investigations. Impairment of brightness-sense was a consistent finding among patients with optic neuropathies and, in some cases, brightness testing appeared to be more sensitive than other techniques in establis

First Responders' Knowledge of and Training Needs in Autism: An Integration of Key Perspectives and Evidence-Based Practice.

Autistic people require frequent support from first responders (FRs) as a function of the core and associated features of their diagnosis; however, they often report negative experiences with FRs and avoid contacting 911. The goals of this study were to generate sustainable, community-informed training standards on autism that are applicable across branches of emergency response to address this concern. Autistic adults, caregivers of autistic people, and first responders were interviewed and surveyed to generate core recommendations, which were cross-referenced with evidence-based practices. M

"I can't remember the last time I was comfortable about being home": lived experience perspectives on thriving following homelessness.

PURPOSE: Strategies for preventing and ending homelessness are frequently measured by their effectiveness on indices of tenancy sustainment. To shift this narrative, we conducted research to identify what is needed to "thrive" following homelessness from the perspectives of persons with lived experience in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: Conducted in the context of a community-based participatory research study aimed at informing the development of intervention strategies, we interviewed 46 persons living with mental illness and/or substance use disorder [n = 25 (54.3%) unhoused; n = 21 (45.7%) hou

Factors determining water treatment behavior for the prevention of cholera in Chad.

Cholera is a well-known and feared disease in developing countries, and is linked to high rates of morbidity and mortality. Contaminated drinking water and the lack of sufficient treatment are two of the key causes of high transmission rates. This article presents a representative health survey performed in Chad to inform future intervention strategies in the prevention and control of cholera. To identify critical psychological factors for behavior change, structured household interviews were administered to N = 1,017 primary caregivers, assessing their thoughts and attitudes toward household

Adolescent Gender Dysphoria and the Informed Consent Model of Care.

The informed consent model of care for people who identify as transgender is predicated on the idea that a careful mental health assessment and a formal diagnosis of gender dysphoria are not necessary preconditions before starting a person on cross-sex hormones. This article considers the legality of the informed consent model in relation to adolescents under 18 in Australia in the light of the decisions of the Family Court in Re Kelvin (2017) 327 FLR 15; [2017] FamCAFC 258 (Re Kelvin) and Re Imogen (No 6) (2020) 61 Fam LR 344; [2020] FamCA 761. An internet-based survey on parental attitudes towards immunization.

Parental misperceptions have been identified as major barriers towards immunizations in children. By use of a German internet vaccine forum for lay persons, a survey was performed to assess current attitudes of parents regarding prevalent issues related to childhood vaccination. Of 6025 participants, 5722 (95.0%) regarded their paediatrician as the most important source of information regarding immunization, followed by leaflets (48.0%), health magazines (44.7%), and the internet (38.7%). Of currently generally recommended childhood immunizations, those against pertussis, Hib and especially me

Factors associated with mammography utilization among Jordanian women.

This descriptive study aims at assessing beliefs and identifying factors that contributed to the utilization of mammography among a group of Jordanian women. Champion's Revised Health Belief Model Scales (HBMS) is the conceptual framework of this study. It was translated and adopted as the self-administered questionnaire utilized for the purpose of this study. The convenience sample was drawn from the women who had a mammography at a private radiology screening and diagnostic clinic in Amman over a 3-month period. Bivariate and multivariate analyses of the study variables were conducted. The r

Exploring the Inclusion of Person-Centered Care Domains in Stroke Transitions of Care Interventions: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

BACKGROUND: Health care teams along the stroke recovery continuum have a responsibility to support care transitions and return to the community. Ideally, individualized care will consider patient and family preferences, best available evidence, and health care professional input. Person-centered care can improve patient-practitioner interactions through shared decision-making in which health professionals and institutions are sensitive to those for whom they provide care. However, it is unclear how the concepts of person-centered care have been described in reports of stroke transitional care

Donor profiles, spreadsheets and video calls: un/known donor conception in the digital age.

This article explores how connections brought about through practices of donor conception are changing in the context of mediatisation and, in particular, how digital technologies shape possibilities for donors and recipient families to know one another. We focus on the growing practice of 'informal' donor conception (IDC) in the UK - donor conceptions which are arranged outside of medical institutions and often facilitated via online platforms. Drawing on interviews with 30 (intended) parents via IDC and 19 informal sperm donors, we show how donors and recipients carefully manage, or attempt

Adolescents' communication styles and learning about birth control.

Adolescents have different communication styles for acquiring information about birth control from a mass medium--interactant or noninteractant, depending on whether they involve communication with others in the process of media use. Three interactant styles are identified: a home-oriented style, where communication is primarily with immediate members and friends; a peer-oriented style, where communication is primarily with own-age peers and personal friends; and multi-source user, where communication is with more than one cluster of sources and the majority of one's communication is not with

Is hormonal treatment still an option in acne today?

Hormonal treatment is indicated in cases of papulopustular, nodular and conglobate acne in females with identified hyperandrogenism, in adult women who have monthly flare-ups and when standard therapeutic options are unsuccessful or inappropriate. This review summarizes the latest information on hormonal therapies including: combined oral contraceptives; anti-androgens, such as cyproterone acetate, spironolactone and flutamide; low-dose glucocorticoids and gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists. It also shares the authors' recommendations for treatment based on the studies discussed here, and

A Key Comprehensive System for Biobehavioral Surveillance of Populations Disproportionately Affected by HIV (National HIV Behavioral Surveillance): Cross-sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: The National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) is a comprehensive system for biobehavioral surveillance conducted since 2003 in 3 populations disproportionately affected by HIV: gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM); people who inject drugs; and heterosexually active persons at increased risk for HIV infection (HET). This ongoing and systematic collection and analysis of data is needed to identify baseline prevalence of behavioral risk factors and prevention service use, as well as to measure progress toward meeting HIV prevention goals among key populations dis
