Movement performance and body size: the relationship for different groups of tests.

It has been shown that inconsistently applied normalization for body size could be an important methodological problem in testing physical performance in areas such as sports, physical education, ergonomy, or physical medicine and rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to evaluate a part of the recently proposed classification of physical performance tests (Jaric 2003) based on the role of body size in the tested performance. Presuming a normalization method P(n)= P/ S(b) based on an allometric relationship between the tested performance P and a selected index of body size S (P(n) performan

Effects of an exercise intervention on participation reported by people with disabilities: A mixed methods randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite a long history of research on the benefits of exercise for people with mobility impairments, little is known about how exercise affects participation in their daily activities. OBJECTIVE: This randomized mixed-methods study examined the effects of participating in a structured community-based exercise program on pain, depression, fatigue, exertion and participation in daily activities. METHOD: Study participants were recruited from a population-based sample of people who returned a survey (n = 800) and indicated they would be willing to participate in another study. The i

Responses to preferred intensities of exertion in men differing in activity levels.

We compared ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), state anxiety, percentage of peak oxygen uptake (% VO2peak), percentage of ventilatory threshold (% Tvent), and blood lactate concentration [HLa] in 11 high-active and 12 low-active men (23 +/- 3 yr) at self-selected power outputs during 20 min of cycling. The high-active group selected higher power outputs than did the low-active group, but % VO2peak and % Tvent were lower for the high-active subjects during the initial 5-10 min of cycling. Both groups reported increased RPE across time, but contrary to past studies of load-incremented cycling,

[Exercise-induced coronary thrombosis].

Heavy exertion as a trigger of cardiac events has been known since antiquity as it was already described in 492 BC in the famous Athens Marathon. Myocardial infarction occurring after physical exertion accounts for about 4% of myocardial infarctions. It is more common in men and younger patients. It usually occurs during intense efforts and especially in inactive people with multiple risk factors. It would be more severe with more frequent Q waves of necrosis on the victims' electrocardiograms, with greater troponin release and a more raised GRACE score. Atherosclerotic plaque rupture is at th…

Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection in a Young Man: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Spontaneous coronary artery dissection is a rare and underdiagnosed cause of acute coronary syndrome, primarily affecting women. The occurrence of spontaneous coronary artery dissection in the context of the absence of traditional atherosclerotic risk factors raises questions about the role of physical exertion or other stressors as potential triggers. Early recognition through clinical assessment and imaging is essential, as the therapeutic approach for spontaneous coronary artery dissection differs significantly from the treatment of traditional atherosclerotic acute coronary synd…

What Does It Take to Reach the Podium? Power Output and Heart Rate-Derived Racing Demands of Top Cyclists During Grand Tours.

Scarce evidence exists on the demands needed to attain the highest positions during Grand Tours (Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, Vuelta a España). Using power output (PO) and heart rate (HR) data, we aimed to compare the racing demands of successful (at least top-5) and less successful (at least top-15) cyclists during Grand Tours. We identified Grand Tours in which we could compare cyclists who had attained a top-5 position (Top) with riders who also competed for the General Classification in the same race but attained a worse position (Non-Top, at least top 15). Different race-derived measure

A two-year examination of the relation between internal and external load and heart rate variability in Australian Rules Football.

The relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and training load in team-sport is unknown. We therefore assessed relations between completed training-load in the previous 1-, 3- and 7-days and waking HRV in professional Australian Rules Football. Linear-mixed models analysed changes in HRV, considering training load from the previous 1-, 3- and 7-days. Total Distance (TD), distance >14.4 km ‧ h-1 (HSR) and >24.9 km ‧ h-1 (Sprint-Distance), duration >85% max heart rate and Rating of Perceived Exertion were included as independent variables. Influence of modified starches on mental performance and physical activity following an exhaustive bout of exercise.

Slow-releasing carbohydrates may delay the effects of fatigue after exhaustive exercise. The purpose of this study was to observe the influence that hydrothermally modified starches (HMS) and traditional maltodextrin (MAL) supplements had on physical endurance and mental performance following exhaustive exercise. Male participants completed a VO2 max and 2 days of cycling sessions using a Velotron ergometer. Cycling sessions were performed at 70% of the VO2 max workload for 150 min. Supplements were consumed 30 min before cycling and during exercise at the 120-min mark (1 g CHO/kg body weight)

TREATMENT OF SUSPECTED EXERTIONAL MYOPATHY USING DANTROLENE IN A COYOTE ( CANIS LATRANS).

A 3-yr-old spayed female coyote ( Canis latrans) developed clinical signs of exertional myopathy after fighting with a conspecific. A diagnosis of exertional myopathy was made based on physical examination findings, probable myoglobinuria, and elevations in serum creatinine kinase activity, alanine aminotransferase activity, and potassium concentration. Dantrolene, a hydantoin analog, as well as supportive and symptomatic therapies, was used to successfully treat exertional myopathy. This is the first reported use of dantrolene in wildlife or zoo animals.
