Maternal plant exposure to fire enhances offspring germination.

Plants that resprout after fire experience drastically altered conditions in post-fire environments. However, the effects of plant exposure to fire on offspring traits remain understudied. Many resprouting species are herbaceous plants that flower and fruit rapidly after fire (i.e., fire-stimulated flowering), developing their seeds under increased resource availability and modified biotic interactions, particularly enhanced pollination. We hypothesize that these changes may improve early offspring development through maternal provisioning and increased quality of floral visitation and pollen …

Evaluation of methods for early detection of Tropilaelaps mites in European honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies.

Tropilaelaps mites are emerging ectoparasitic parasites of European honey bees (Apis mellifera) that pose a serious threat to apiculture and pollination security globally. There is a paucity of evidence to support current detection methods used in biosecurity programs. We conducted field trials in Papua New Guinea using 27 infested A. mellifera colonies across six apiaries to evaluate six Tropilaelaps detection methods: bump test, alcohol wash, modified rapid brood uncapping, worker brood uncapping, environmental DNA (eDNA) swabs, and sticky mats with an acaricide. eDNA swabs and acaricides wi…

Integrated transcriptome and metabolome analyses uncover stage-specific dynamic regulatory networks during sesame floral development.

Sesame is an important oilseed crop, and floral development is a key biological process that lays the foundation for pollination, fertilization, and seed formation, which are closely associated with final yield potential. However, the dynamic transcriptional and metabolic regulatory mechanisms during floral development remain unclear. Here, we performed an integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis across five key developmental stages (T1-T5) of sesame flowers to systematically dissect the multi‑omics regulatory network. KEGG enrichment analysis revealed distinct stage‑specific metabol…

A genome-wide association study reveals a novel regulator of ovule number and fertility in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Ovules contain the female gametophytes which are fertilized during pollination to initiate seed development. Thus, the number of ovules that are produced during flower development is an important determinant of seed crop yield and plant fitness. Mutants with pleiotropic effects on development often alter the number of ovules, but specific regulators of ovule number have been difficult to identify in traditional mutant screens. We used natural variation in Arabidopsis accessions to identify new genes involved in the regulation of ovule number. The ovule numbers per flower of 189 Arabidopsis acc…

Mastocytosis and the Fig Wasp (Blastophaga psenes).

BACKGROUND: Mastocytosis involves the abnormal proliferation of mast cells and clinical variability. In the case of anaphylaxis, the triggering antigen, often associated with Hymenoptera allergens, must be identified. The common fig (Ficus carica) requires the fig wasp (Blastophaga psenes) for pollination. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the ingestion of B. psenes as a trigger of anaphylaxis in patients with mastocytosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Skin prick tests (SPTs) and specific immunoglobulin E to the possible involved allergens were carried out in the patient and in 4 controls allergic to Hymenop…

Bees for development: Brazilian survey reveals how to optimize stingless beekeeping.

Stingless bees are an important asset to assure plant biodiversity in many natural ecosystems, and fulfill the growing agricultural demand for pollination. However, across developing countries stingless beekeeping remains an essentially informal activity, technical knowledge is scarce, and management practices lack standardization. Here we profited from the large diversity of stingless beekeepers found in Brazil to assess the impact of particular management practices on productivity and economic revenues from the commercialization of stingless bee products. Our study represents the first large…

A Honeybee-Safer Pyrazolyl Pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidine Mesoionic Targeting Fall Armyworm nAChR α1/β2 Subunits.

Spodoptera frugiperda is a highly destructive pest with widespread resistance to conventional insecticides. Mesoionic chemicals are promising for insecticide discovery, yet lepidopteran-active examples remain limited and many raise pollinator-safety concerns. Here, we report a series of pyrazole-decorated mesoionic pyrido[1,2-a]pyrimidine derivatives and identify Q4 as a lepidopteran-active insecticide candidate with potent activity against S. frugiperda, although its potency is slightly lower than that of the commercial standard dicloromezotiaz. Q4 exhibits relatively lower acute contact toxi

Country specific hybridization of honey bees from lineage M.

BACKGROUND: Honey bees are essential pollinators supporting agricultural production and wild plant diversity. In evolutionary lineage M, some populations are threatened by genetic erosion caused by the widespread introduction of commercially bred queens. To assess this risk, wing images from existing and new datasets were used to assign them to 4 evolutionary lineages (A, C, M, and O). The new dataset consisted of 29,043 wing images representing 1,342 colony samples from 10 countries. RESULTS: Overall, 63.7% of colonies belonged to lineage M, whereas 27.5% were classified as A, 7.9% as C, and

Impact of pesticides on honeybees (Apis mellifera) physiology, foraging and colony: An overview.

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) play an indispensable role in global agricultural production, pollinating crops that support approximately one-third of the world's food supply and bolstering biodiversity through these essential ecosystem services. Yet, their survival is severely threatened by multiple environmental stressors, including biological (e.g. pathogens, parasites) and chemical (e.g. plant protection products/agents) factors, particularly pesticides. Pesticides, a broad spectrum of agrochemicals such as insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides are widely deployed to protect crops from inse

Repurposing the orphan drug nitisinone to control the transmission of African trypanosomiasis.

Tsetse transmit African trypanosomiasis, which is a disease fatal to both humans and animals. A vaccine to protect against this disease does not exist so transmission control relies on eliminating tsetse populations. Although neurotoxic insecticides are the gold standard for insect control, they negatively impact the environment and reduce populations of insect pollinator species. Here we present a promising, environment-friendly alternative to current insecticides that targets the insect tyrosine metabolism pathway. A bloodmeal contains high levels of tyrosine, which is toxic to haematophagou

Targeting the GABA receptor for agricultural Pest control: from molecular mechanisms to novel NAM site inhibitors.

The ionotropic γ-aminobutyric acid receptor (GABAR) is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter receptor in the insect central nervous system and a proven target for multiple classes of insecticides. The recent discovery of the NAM binding site located at the transmembrane subunit interface has revitalized interest in this classic target, leading to the development of two novel classes of insecticides-isoxazolines and meta-diamides-that offer potent efficacy and lack cross-resistance with conventional agents. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the molecular basis of insect GABARs, inc

Oxygen-dependent regulation of serotonin receptor 5-HT 1A in hypoxic response and flight performance in bumblebees, Bombus terrestris.

Bumblebees, as indispensable pollinators, possess energy-intensive flight that depends on efficient oxygen and energy utilization. However, how aerobic and anaerobic metabolisms in flight muscles are coordinated under varying oxygen levels remains unresolved. Here, we identify the serotonin receptor 5-HT 1A as a potential oxygen-responsive factor in the flight muscles of Bombus terrestris. Under oxygen-limited conditions (1.6-12 kPa), bumblebees significantly reduced thoracic temperature, respiration, and flight performance and even induced stupor, accompanied by mitochondrial damage in the fl

The Hoverfly Attracting Property of a Methyl Salicylate-Containing (E)-β-Farnesene Analog (3e) and Potential Mechanism by Mediating the EcorOBP15 and EcorOR3.

Using natural enemies provides a sustainable method to control major agricultural pests. Hoverflies are significant natural enemies of aphids and efficient pollinators. Herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs), including (E)-β-farnesene (EBF) and methyl salicylate (MeSA), are key olfactory cues mediating hoverflies behavior. Our previous work identified compound 3e, an EBF analog containing a MeSA moiety, exhibited aphid-repelling and ladybug-attracting activities. However, whether 3e can attract hoverflies remains unknown. Therefore, this study explored the attractant property and potential
