Antimicrobial activities of ozenoxacin against isolates of propionibacteria and staphylococci from Japanese patients with acne vulgaris.

Ozenoxacin, a novel non-fluorinated topical quinolone, was assessed for in vitro antimicrobial activity against clinical isolates of propionibacteria and staphylococci according to the broth microdilution method recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. The isolates used in this study were collected from Japanese patients with acne vulgaris during a period from 2012 to 2013. The MIC90s of ozenoxacin against Propionibacterium acnes (n=266), Propionibacterium granulosum (n=10), Staphylococcus aureus (n=23), Staphylococcus epidermidis (n=229) and other coagulase-negative sta…

Skin barrier and microbiome in acne.

Acne is an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory disease. Although several factors are involved in its pathophysiology, this process is not completely understood. Androgen hormone activity increases sebum production inside the pilosebaceous follicle, adjusting the environment for the development of Propionibacterium acnes which triggers inflammation. Knowing how others factors such as the skin barrier and microbiome are involved in acne, can help in understanding more about the disease and may help to conduct a better treatment.

The use of lymecycline and benzoyl peroxide for the treatment of progressive macular hypomelanosis: a prospective study.

Progressive macular hypomelanosis is a dermatosis of uncertain etiology. The participation of Propionibacterium acnes has been suggested in view of the response achieved following therapy with drugs that are active against this bacterium. This report describes a series of thirteen patients with progressive macular hypomelanosis who were treated with an association of lymecycline and benzoyl peroxide over a three-month period. Response to treatment was excellent and the positive results were maintained during the entire follow up period.

Comparison of the skin microbiota of patients with acne vulgaris and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of the pilosebaceous units which can affect the individual's physiological and psychological health. Abnormal growth of lipophilic anaerobic bacteria such as Propionibacterium acnes is reported to be a major factor in the development of acne. However, the relationship between skin microorganisms and acne has not been fully elucidated. Our study aimed to explore the microbial differences between patients with acne and healthy controls (HCs). METHODS: The study involved 16 participants diagnosed with acne vulgaris and 5 HCs. We co…

Experimental transient bacteraemias in human subjects with clinically healthy gingivae.

Thirty-six subjects with no evidence of clinical gingival inflammation underwent a standardized toothbrushing procedure. Blood specimens, obtained from a vein in the antecubital fossa during the last 30 seconds of brushing, were cultured under aerobic and stringent anaerobic conditions. Three subjects exhibited detectable bacteraemias, Propionibacterium sp. being isolated from two of the subjects, while Actinomyces sp., Streptococcus sanguis and Streptococcus mitis were isolated from the third. The implications of these results are discussed.

Chitogel following endoscopic sinus surgery promotes a healthy microbiome and reduces postoperative infections.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative infections following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) impair wound healing and lead to poor outcomes. The aim of thi … ficant increase in the combined relative abundance of commensals Corynebacterium and Cutibacterium (Propionibacterium) from 30.15% at baseline to 46.62% at 12 weeks compared with control (47.18% to 40.79%) (p.adj = 0.01). CONCLUSION: Chitogel significantly improved both the nasoendoscopic appearance of the sinuses and sinus ostial patency at 12 weeks postoperative …

The role of the skin microbiome in atopic dermatitis: a systematic review.

Dysbiosis is a hallmark of atopic dermatitis (AD). The composition of skin microbiome communities and the causality of dysbiosis in eczema h … coccus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis were elevated and other genera were reduced, including Propionibacterium. A mouse study indicated that dysbiosis is a driving factor in eczema pathogenesis. The data are not sufficiently robust for good characterization; however, dysbiosis in AD not only implicates Staphylococcus spp., but also microbes such as Propionib …

Avidumicin, a novel cyclic bacteriocin, produced by Cutibacterium avidum shows anti-Cutibacterium acnes activity.

The prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant Cutibacterium acnes in acne patients has increased owing to inappropriate antimicrobial use. Commensal skin bacteria may play an important role in maintaining the balance of the skin microbiome by producing antimicrobial substances. Inhibition of Cu. acnes overgrowth can prevent the development and exacerbation of acne vulgaris. Here, we evaluated skin bacteria with anti-Cu. acnes activity. Growth inhibition activity against Cu. acnes was tested using 122 strains isolated from the skin of healthy volunteers and acne patients. Comparative genomic analys

The Immunogenetics of Acne.

Acne vulgaris results from a complex interaction between environment and genetic factors. While colonization of the pilosebaceous unit with Propionibacterium was previously considered to be the main cause of acne, the contribution of host-related factors that allow the growth of the bacteria and its immune response against bacterial components are now considered to be more important. Many of these host characteristics have a genetic base that is either involved in the regulation of the immune responses or the steroid hormones metabolisms. This chapter aims to explore the functions of these gen…

What's new in acne and inflammation?

Acne is a disease that leaves physiological as well as physical scars. As we attempt to understand this complicated disease, new research challenges our traditional understanding that the microcomedone is the initial step in the development of the acne lesion. Recent evidence suggests that subclinical inflammation is the primary event in lesion development and that inflammation persists throughout the lesion life-cycle. Therefore, all types of acne should be considered "inflammatory" acne.

The pathophysiology of acne.

Acne is a multifactorial inflammatory disease affecting pilosebaceous follicles. The initial event in the development of an acne lesion is abnormal desquamation of the keratinocytes that line the sebaceous follicle, which creates a microplug or microcomedo. An increase in circulating androgens at the onset of puberty stimulates the production of sebum into the pilosebaceous unit. These events combine to create an environment within the pilosebaceous unit that is favorable for the colonization of the commensal bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes. With proliferation, P acnes secretes various infla…
