[Adult-onset Still's disease--the effect of methylprednisolone pulse therapy].

The authors describe in a 40-year-old woman Still's disease with an adult onset. The activity of the disease was not controlled by large Prednisone doses and therefore pulsed treatment with methylprednisolone with very favourable results was used. The authors discuss the use of pulsed treatment with methylprednisolone in this disease.

Finger injury resulting from pulse oximeter probe during orthognathic surgery.

Pulse oximetry is a useful technique for perioperative monitoring of the surgical patient. The use of the finger clamp design of oximeter probes may cause finger injury in lengthy surgical procedures. A case is presented and discussed with respect to an ischemic finger injury created by an oximeter probe during a hypotensive anesthetic technique. Avoidance of this type of problem includes proper placement of the probe on the finger and changing the probe to a different finger every 3 to 4 hours.

Carotid body tumor: flow sensitive pulse sequences and MR angiography.

The magnetic resonance (MR) appearance of carotid body tumors has been previously described. Classically, these lesions are well circumscribed and highly vascular and cause a characteristic separation of the external and internal carotid arteries. Hypointense foci within these tumors are seen on T1-weighted images. The T2-weighted images snow a "salt and pepper" pattern. We report a carotid bifurcation glomus tumor that exhibited the above features on conventional MR. Multiplanar gadolinium enhanced MR as well as flow-sensitive MR techniques including small flip angle gradient refocused images

[Value of the measurement of pulse wave velocity during exertion].

Establishing an arterial compliance index by measuring pulse wave velocity (PWV) has proved useful for the early diagnosis of arterial lesions in atherosclerosis and diabetes, but the lack of reproducibility of this measurement when performed at rest has limited its use. Exercise tests, a global method for the dynamic study of blood pressure (BP) level, has been suggested as a means of standardizing the neurosensorial influences on the vasomotor tone. In this paper, we advocate a dynamic evaluation of arterial compliance by measurement of PWV during exercise, and we report the results of our s…

Mid-systolic sound associated with aortic insufficiency and bisferiens pulse.

Systolic ejection clicks, often associated with cardiac disease, can be distinguished from mid-systolic clicks of mitral and tricuspid origin, which are frequently benign. A different mid-systolic sound has been recognized, with timing similar to the mid-systolic clicks, which is associated with aortic insufficiency. This report describes a case in which such a sound was identified prior to aortic valve replacement, and disappeared with surgery, thus adding evidence to previous concepts of the origin of this sound, and its relationship to the hemodynamic abnormality associated with aortic valv

Determination of nitroimidazoles in biological fluids by differential pulse polarography.

A sensitive differential pulse polarographic assay was developed for the determination of metronidazole, ornidazole, and 2-nitro-1H-imidazole-1-(3-methoxy-2-propanol) in plasma. The compounds are selectively extracted into ethyl acetate from a protein-free filtrate of plasma, buffered to pH 7.0 +/- 0.2. The residue of the ethyl acetate extract is dissolved in 0.1 N NaOH and analyzed by differential pulse polarography for the reduction of the nitro group at approximately -0.600 v versus the saturated calomel electrode. The overall recovery from plasma was about 55 +/- 3.0% (SD) for the three co…

Validation of the Efficacy and Safety of Targeted Pulsed Ablation of the Bronchus with a Novel Navigated Pulsed Electric Field Ablation System.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchial rheoplasty with non-thermal pulsed electric field (PEF) ablation has excellent developmental potential for the therapy of chronic bronchitis (CB) subtypes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the volume of reported clinical studies is quite limited. Also, repeated and missed ablations are involved during the procedure, affecting the targeted therapy and PEF further development. Evaluating the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of a novel navigated PEF ablation system in the therapy of CB, promoting the COPD therapeutic field toward a new stage of gre…

Different effects of monophasic pulses and biphasic pulses applied by a bipolar stimulation electrode in the rat hippocampal CA1 region.

BACKGROUND: Electrical pulse stimulations have been applied in brain for treating certain diseases such as movement disorders. High-frequency stimulations (HFS) of biphasic pulses have been used in clinic stimulations, such as deep brain stimulation (DBS), to minimize the risk of tissue damages caused by the electrical stimulations. However, HFS sequences of monophasic pulses have often been used in animal experiments for studying neuronal responses to the stimulations. It is not clear yet what the differences of the neuronal responses to the HFS of monophasic pulses from the HFS of biphasic p…

Hyperspectral assessment of acne skin exposed to intense pulsed light (IPL) intense pulsed light in acne treatment.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of intense pulsed light action on the skin is based on selective photothermolysis. The light delivered to the tissue is scattered and absorbed by chromophores that absorb a beam of radiation of a specific length. The skin reflectance changes depending on the physiological state of the tissue, as shown by the hyperspectral camera. The aim of the study was to assess the hyperspectral reflectance of acne skin before and after intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy and to compare it with the reflectance of healthy skin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved 27 volunteers…
