Optical characterisation of two novel myopia control spectacle lenses.

PURPOSE: To quantify the amount of myopic defocus, contrast modulation and other optical characteristics of two novel spectacle lenses (MiYOSMART by Hoya and Stellest by Essilor) with the inclusion of lenslets in their designs were investigated computationally and experimentally. This paper examined the hypothesis that despite the non-coaxial nature of the optics, image degradation will exist due to the fragmented nature of the base optic when imaging through the lens regions populated by lenslets. METHODS: Optical power was evaluated by computing wavefront vergence and curvature from wavefro

Multiple segment spectacle lenses for myopia control. Part 2: Impact on myopia progression.

PURPOSE: Initial studies have suggested that multiple segment (MS) spectacle lenses can reduce the progression rate of childhood myopia and axial eye growth. This paper aimed to compare the effectiveness of two different available designs of MS lens and to explore the nature of their control effect. METHOD: Published data from the only two clinical trials in which changes in mean spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and axial length (AL) for matched groups of myopic children wearing either MS or single-vision (SV) spectacle corrections, recorded over a period of at least 2 years, were furthe

The importance of the relationship between the position of the correcting lens principal planes (H'1-H'2) and principal planes (H1-H2) of the optical eye system--aphakic correction.

In the clinical refraction of the eye, aniseikonia and anisometropia are inevitably used terms. Image formation and its retinal size is the function of the power of the dioptric eye system. However, the correcting lens in front of the eye and the eye optical system represent a unique optical afocal system, in which the distance between correcting lens and corneal vertex is of utmost importance, since it determines the size (together with appropriate correcting lens) of the retinal image. In the case of a monoculus, the size of the retinal image is not important. But, when correcting one eye wh

Contact lenses in the management of keratoconus.

The range of contact lens modalities currently available for the successful optical correction of keratoconus is greatly expanded. We review lens types currently available for the nonsurgical management of keratoconus, including rigid gas-permeable (GP) lenses, intralimbal lenses, corneoscleral lenses, scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, and piggyback lenses. In this review, we discuss the contemporary range of available lens types and the circumstances in which they are best used.

Back- and front-vertex powers of astigmatic systems.

Back- and front-vertex powers are concepts of some importance in clinical practice. For example, the former is used for characterizing the typical spectacle lens and the latter for characterizing the addition of a bifocal lens. Typically, they are defined either in terms of vergence or the distance to a focal point. This note argues that current definitions are not as clear as they might be, that there is an unnecessary asymmetry between the definitions of front- and back-vertex powers, and that they are designed primarily for systems that are not astigmatic. The purpose of this note is to off

Posterior corneal curvature and its influence on corneal dioptric power.

An algorithm for estimation of the posterior corneal curvature is presented and applied on data from normal and keratoconic eyes. Radius of central posterior corneal curvature are demonstrated to be (mean +/- SD) 6.71 +/- 0.23 mm and 5.58 +/- 0.78 mm in normals and keratoconic eyes, respectively. This corresponds to a ratio between posterior and anterior corneal curvature at 0.85 and 0.83 in the groups mentioned. Both these ratios are significantly smaller than the corresponding ratio at 0.88 in Gullstrand's schematic eye which on corneal dioptric power results in offset errors at 0.20 D and 0

Refraction and eye size in the elderly. A review based on literature, including own results.

A review is given of the literature concerning refraction and eye size in the elderly. Information being sporadic, a picture has to be pieced together from cross-sectional studies of various authors. This implies differences from study to study regarding definitions, composition of samples, and methodology in particular. In Western communities, the main refractive change after the age of 50 is towards hypermetropia, but there are only few studies dealing with eye size. The secular trend--increasing bodily dimensions for each new generation--has possibly contributed to the concept of smaller ey

Interactions Between High-Intensity Light and Unrestricted Vision in the Drive for Hyperopia.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of optical vs. illuminance factors and their duration-dependency on lens-induced hyperopia (LIH) in chick eyes. METHODS: Hyperopia was induced in one eye in chicks (10 groups; n = 126) from day 1 after hatching until day 8 using +10-diopter lenses with fellow eyes as controls. One group (LIH) served as the control without any interventions. The remaining groups were exposed to 2, 4, or 6 hours of unrestricted vision (UnV), high-intensity light (HL; 15,000 lux), or both (HL + UnV). Ocular axial length (AL), refractive error, and choroidal thickness were measured

Corneal changes after suspending contact lens wear in early pellucid marginal corneal degeneration and moderate keratoconus.

OBJECTIVES: This case study reports on how refraction, visual acuity, and ocular higher-order aberrations changed after rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lens wear was suspended by a patient with early pellucid marginal corneal degeneration (PMD) and by a patient with moderate keratoconus. Alterations in central corneal power and axes, central corneal thickness, and corneal topography were also explored. METHODS: Ocular aberrations and Scheimpflug photography were measured at 2 visits, 7 days apart, after the patients had removed their contact lenses. Subjective refraction and logarithm of the minimu

Form deprivation myopia in adolescent monkeys.

BACKGROUND: Early in life, at ages corresponding to the rapid infantile phase of ocular growth in humans, visual feedback can modulate refractive development in monkeys and many other species. To determine if vision-dependent mechanisms can still influence refractive development in primates during the slow juvenile phase of ocular growth, the time period when myopia typically develops in human children, we examined the effects of form deprivation on adolescent monkeys. METHODS: Unilateral, form deprivation was produced in four rhesus monkeys by surgically fusing the eyelids of one eye. The on
