[Reactions of the adrenal cortex to immobilization stress in intact animals and against a background of hypokinesia].

Morphological investigation of the rat adrenal cortex and corticosterone contents in the blood plasma demonstrated certain peculiarities in the adrenal reaction to the primary and repeated immobilization stress in intact animals and after hypokinesia. It has been stated that morphological manifestation to an acute stress reaction kinesia is less pronounced than at an analogous single effect. Investigation on corticosterone content in blood plasma revealed certain functional peculiarities in the adrenal cortex reactions in different variants of the experiments. Five hours after the beginning of

Normal acid-base status of arterial blood from the conscious, chair-restrained squirrel monkey.

Normal acid-base status of arterial blood (pHa =7.40, PaCO2=38.1 Torr) was demonstrated for conscious, restrained squirrel monkeys when environmental stimuli were minimized and monkeys are habituated to experimental procedures. These results indicate the potential for using squirrel monkeys in experiments in which normal acid-base status is a significant factor.

[Serious foot injury: consider partial amputation designed to preserve leg-length and a weight-bearing stump].

Three patients with physically demanding jobs, a 25-year-old farmer, a 22-year-old market trader and a 32-year-old house painter, each suffered a traumatic injury of one foot. All three underwent amputation in which part of their foot was salvaged and were able to return to their physically demanding jobs. The first patient underwent a Syme's amputation, the second a Pirogoff's amputation and the third a Chopart's amputation. A partial amputation of the foot has several advantages: patients are able to walk without walking aids, particularly in and around the house, due to the presence of a di

Effects of ACTH6-9-Pro-Gly-Pro Peptide on the Morphofunctional State of the Colon Wall under Conditions of Prolonged Stress.

We studied the effects of ACTH6-9-Pro-Gly-Pro on the morphofunctional state of the colon wall under conditions of prolonged stress. It was found that N-terminal analogue of ACTH, ACTH6-9-Pro-Gly-Pro mitigated morphofunctional disorders in the colon wall caused by 28-day restraint stress and accelerated adaptation by reducing the number of inflammatory infiltrate cells and mast cells. The most pronounced changes were observed after treatment with the peptide at a dose of 500 μg/kg.

Behavioral Consequences of Hippocampal 5-HT7 Receptors Blockade in Stressed Rats.

Serotonin (5-HT) has long been involved in response to stress and its effect may be, in part, mediated by 5-HT1a and 5-HT7 receptor subtypes in different brain structures. Both pre- and post-synaptic activation of 5-HT1a receptor, respectively, in the rat median raphe nucleus (MnRN) and hippocampus, lead to adaptation to acute inescapable stressors such as restraint and forced swim. 5-HT7 receptor (5HT7r), a stimulatory G-protein coupled receptor, has also been investigated as a possible candidate for mediating stress response. In the MnRN, activation of 5-HT7r has antidepressant effects, whil

Methods for experimentally increasing circulating acyl-CoA-binding protein (ACBP) levels in mice under chronic restraint stress.

Chronic restraint stress (CRS) is a widely recognized model to study stress-induced anorexia and metabolic dysregulation in mice. Acyl-coenzyme A-binding protein (ACBP) has emerged as a critical player in metabolic regulation, with potential implications for stress-related disorders. This study presents two complementary methodologies to artificially elevate circulating Acyl-CoA-binding protein (ACBP) levels in mice under CRS. The first approach involves the continuous delivery of recombinant ACBP via subcutaneously implanted osmotic pumps. The second approach utilizes the retention using sele

Chronic restraint stress associations with sperm global DNA hypermethylation: Impacts on male reproductive function in rats.

Recent evidence indicates the involvement of epigenetic mechanisms in the adaptive biological responses to chronic restraint stress. However, the impact of stress on the epigenetic programming of germ cells and subsequent effects on reproductive capacity remain understudied. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of chronic restraint stress in sperm global DNA methylation and male reproductive function in Wistar rats. The animals were separated into two groups: the chronic restraint stress group (14 sessions) and the control group. After the final stress session, tissues of all th

Unraveling the potency of naturally derived Virgin coconut oil in modulating chronic restraint stress-induced spatial learning and memory.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Stress in day-to-day life affects the body system differently by altering homeostasis and biological processes. The foremost sign of chronic stress-induced disorders is reflected in behavioral activity. Chronic stress affects the brain negatively, it modulates neurobehavioral activity and impairs the associated activities like learning, memory, and cognition. Emerging evidence suggests that virgin coconut oil (VCO), is an abundant source of natural antioxidants with anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, and neuroprotective potential. However, VCO's efficacy in ameliorat

Neuroprotective Effects of Thymol and p-Cymene in Immobilized Male rats through Alterations in Molecular, Biochemical, Histological, and Behavioral Parameters.

The research was conducted to examine the neuroprotective effect of thymol and its precursor p-cymene on chronic immobility stress in adult male Wistar rats. The rats were subjected to 2.5 h of stress every day for 14 consecutive days by placing them inside a restrainer. Thymol (10 mg/kg) and p-cymene (50 mg/kg) were given to the rats during the same period. The results showed that thymol and p-cymene prevented the increase of MDA level, decline of GSH level, and decrease of SOD and GPx activity in the hippocampus of rats exposed to stress. These monoterpenes also prevented the increase in the

Acute restraint stress regulates brain DNMT3a and promotes defensive behaviors in male rats.

Depending on its duration and severity, stress may contribute to neuropsychiatric diseases such as depression and anxiety. Studies have shown that stress impacts the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, but its downstream molecular, behavioral, and nociceptive effects remain unclear. We hypothesized that a 2-hour single exposure to acute restraint stress (ARS) activates the HPA axis and changes DNA methylation, a molecular mechanism involved in the machinery of stress regulation. We further hypothesized that ARS induces anxiety-like and risk assessment behavior and alters nociceptive res

Influence of nursing staff characteristics on seclusion in acute mental health care-A prospective two-year follow-up study.

INTRODUCTION: Seclusion still occurs on mental health wards, despite absence of therapeutic efficacy and high risks of adverse patient effects. Literature on the effect of nursing teams, and the role of psychological characteristics in particular, on frequency of seclusion is scarce. AIM: To explore the influence of demographic, professional or psychological, nursing team-level, and shift characteristics on the frequency of use of seclusion. METHODS: Prospective two-year follow-up study. RESULTS: We found that the probability of seclusion was lower when nursing teams with at least 75% males

Stress resilience evidenced by grooming behaviour and dopamine levels in male mice selected for high and low immobility using the tail suspension test.

Grooming behaviour has different functions on many species during development and can be observed and affected during periods of stress. By selecting male mice with high (HI) and low (LI) immobility traits in the tail suspension test, a screening for antidepressant drugs, we investigate how these phenotypes associated with grooming behaviour may be influenced by the effects of repeated restraint stress. For this we used the sucrose preference test and the splash test in a novel and a familiar cage performed before and after exposure to 2 days of restraint stress. Animals were submitted to an a

Passive restraint reduces visually induced motion sickness in older adults.

Virtual environments such as those used in video games and driving/flight simulators are used for entertainment and training, but are often associated with visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). In this study, we asked whether passive restraint of the head and torso could reduce VIMS in younger and older adults. Twenty-one younger (18-35 years) and 16 older (65 + years) healthy adults engaged in a simulated driving task using a console video game while seated. On different days, participants completed 2 conditions: (a) in the unrestrained condition, participants were seated in a chair withou

Assessment of Cardiac Troponin I Responses in Nonhuman Primates during Restraint, Blood Collection, and Dosing in Preclinical Safety Studies.

Limited information has been published on the use of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) as a biomarker of cardiac injury in monkeys. The purpose of these studies was to characterize the cTnI response seen in cynomolgus macaques during routine dosing and blood collection procedures typically used in preclinical safety studies and to better understand the pathogenesis of this response. We measured cTnI using two different methods, the Siemens Immulite cTnI assay and the more sensitive Siemens Troponin I-Ultra assay. We were able to demonstrate that after oral, subcutaneous, or intravenous dosing of commo

Reproductive Stage and Modulation of Stress-Induced Tau Phosphorylation in Female Rats.

Chronic stress is implicated as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative disorders. Although the specific mechanisms linking stress exposure and AD vulnerability have yet to be fully determined, our laboratory and others have shown that acute and repeated restraint stress in rodents leads to an increase in hippocampal tau phosphorylation (tau-P) and tau insolubility, a critical component of tau pathology in AD. Although tau phosphorylation induced by acute psychological stress is dependent on intact signaling through the type 1 corticotropin-releasing factor recep

Behavioral effects of acclimatization to restraint protocol used for awake animal imaging.

Functional MRI in awake rats involves acclimatization to restraint to minimize motion. We designed a study to examine the effects of an acclimatization protocol (5 days of restraint, 60 min per day) on the emission of 22-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations and performance in a forced swim test (FST). Our results showed that USV calls are reduced significantly by days 3, 4 and 5 of acclimatization. Although the rats showed less climbing activity (and more immobility) in FST on day 5 compared to the 1st day of restraint acclimatization, the difference was not detected once the animals were given a 2-we

[Constraint-induced movement therapy in neurological rehabilitation: which modality to choose? Our experience in rehabilitation in Geneva].

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) is to stimulate the use of the affected upper arm following stroke and to improve the integration of the arm in activities of daily living. CIMT consists of restraining the unaffected arm to limit its use, combined with a training program based on the shaping principle. We aimed to explore how this method can be used in practice by studying 4 patients after stroke. METHOD: We investigated 4 patients, 2 with chronic disability (10 and 17 months after the stroke), and 2 with subacute disability (1 month after the stroke). Pati
