BACKGROUND: The Lidcombe Program is a stuttering treatment approach for children between the ages of 3 and 6 years. Most papers about the Lidcombe Program, however, are based on studies conducted in native English-speaking countries. The aim of this paper is to systematically review the delivery and implementation of the Lidcombe Program in non-native English-speaking countries.
SUMMARY: A resource search was conducted between October and November 2019. Scopus, PubMed, ASHA, Cochrane Library, ERIC, Google Scholar, and SpeechBITE databases and reference lists of relevant papers were searched f…

Previous studies regarding developmental stuttering (DS) suggest that motor neural networks are strongly affected. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to investigate neural activation of the primary motor cortex in DS during movement execution, and the influence of muscle representations involved in movements on "surrounding" ones. TMS was applied over the contralateral abductor digiti minimi (ADM) motor representation, at rest and during the movement of homologue first dorsal interosseous muscles (tonic contraction, phasic movements cued by acoustic signalling, and "self-paced" m…

This multiple case study analysis describes the immediate effects on speech fluency of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) applied to participants with persistent stuttering and concomitant orofacial disorders. Study participants were 14 adolescents and adults who stuttered and had jaw clenching bruxism or mouth breathing. Participants experienced low-frequency TENS applied at mild motor level for 20 minutes with electrodes placed at the lower third of the face (Area A), submandibular region (Area B), posterior neck (Area C), or shoulder girdle (Area D), with speech fluency asse…

Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is the established standard to treat occlusive extracranial atherosclerotic carotid disease. Complications of CEA must be recognized and dealt with efficiently due to the potentially catastrophic neurologic sequelae. A 67-year-old African American man was transferred from an outside hospital for an acute stroke. He had initially presented with a small right frontal subcortical infarct and had undergone a right CEA 2 days prior to transfer. He had a fluctuating examination with left-sided hemiplegia to slight hemiparesis and inconsistent neglect. Head CT demonstrate

For many infectious disease processes such as emerging zoonoses and vaccine-preventable diseases, [Formula: see text] and infections occur as self-limited stuttering transmission chains. A mechanistic understanding of transmission is essential for characterizing the risk of emerging diseases and monitoring spatio-temporal dynamics. Thus methods for inferring [Formula: see text] and the degree of heterogeneity in transmission from stuttering chain data have important applications in disease surveillance and management. Previous researchers have used chain size distributions to infer [Formula: s…

UNLABELLED: This study examined stuttering patterns in five patients with basal ganglia injury. None of the patients had a history of developmental stuttering. Four patients were right-handed; one patient was ambidextrous. Stuttering tests administered to patients assessed sentence repetition, reading aloud, explanations of a comic strip, and conversation. Accessory behaviors such as facial grimaces, associated movements of the limbs, and avoidance behaviors were observed. The results of this study differ from those of previous studies of neurogenic stuttering in several respects: (1) blocks w…

PURPOSE: Language-induced epilepsy involves seizure precipitation by speaking, reading, and writing. Seizures are similar to those of reading epilepsy (RE). The nosologic position of language-induced epilepsy is not clear. We performed a clinical and neurophysiological study in a multigenerational family with the association of idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) with ictal stuttering as a manifestation of reflex language-induced epilepsy.
METHODS: Nine members on three generations were studied. All patients underwent video-polygraphic EEG recordings (awake and during sleep). A standardized…

BACKGROUND: There will always be a place for stuttering treatments designed to eliminate or reduce stuttered speech. When those treatments are required, direct speech measures of treatment process and outcome are needed in clinical practice.
AIMS: Based on the contents of published clinical trials of such treatments, three 'core' measures of treatment outcome are presented for consideration by clinicians: measures of stuttering rate, speech rate and speech naturaleness.
MAIN CONTRIBUTION: In contrast to clinical trials, however, clinicians are at liberty to have as many outcome measures as t…

Many stuttering treatments incorporate contingencies for stuttering that are thought to contribute to treatment effectiveness. One contingency used in a number of treatment programs for children is time-out (TO) from speaking. However, although TO has been shown to control stuttering in adults there are no clear demonstrations of this effect in children. One aim of the present study was to demonstrate in the laboratory that TO reduces stuttering in children. Three school-age children spoke in a single-subject ABA experiment. In the B phase, a red light was illuminated for 5 seconds when the su…

Aphasia following metrizamide myelography has been reported infrequently. During a seven-month period, we examined two patients who developed Broca's aphasia, apraxia of speech, oral-buccal-facial apraxia and neurogenic stuttering after intrathecal metrizamide administration. In each case, focal neurologic deficits were accompanied by clinical, electroencephalographic and radiologic signs of generalized neurologic disease. Serial speech and language evaluations initially revealed severe deficits that were largely resolved by the third day post-myelography. Out-patient follow-up examinations de…

Overt and covert assessments of monologue and conversational speech were compared in 22 male adult stutterers immediately prior to the commencement of intensive treatment, and in 15 male adult stutterers immediately after completion of intensive treatment. There were no overall differences between covert and overt speech measures taken immediately before treatment. Immediately after intensive treatment, stuttering frequency (%SS) was significantly higher in covert evaluation than in overt evaluation, though the magnitude of the difference was small. There were no consistent covert-overt differ…

INTRODUCTION: This study assessed multilingual individuals' attitudes toward stuttering and cluttering, using Chinese university foreign language majors as a sample. It employed the standardized Public Opinion Survey of Human Attributes-Stuttering (POSHA-S) and the Public Opinion Survey of Human Attributes-Cluttering (POSHA-Cl). It further examined whether multilingual background and survey format influenced participants' attitudes.
METHODS: A total of 222 foreign language majors from three northeastern Chinese universities participated. Each university's cohort was randomly assigned to compl…

BACKGROUND: Stuttering is a complex communication difference with significant psychological and social consequences. Negative attitudes toward people who stutter (PWS) often stem from misconceptions and limited awareness. This study aimed to investigate the attitudes of elementary school teachers toward stuttering and examine demographic factors associated with these attitudes using the Persian version of the Public Opinion Survey of Human Attributes-Stuttering (POSHA-S) in elementary school teachers in Zahedan, Iran.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 150 randomly selected teachers…

Stuttering is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by involuntary disruptions in the rhythmic flow of speech. Notably, stuttering is associated with aberrant structure and function of the basal ganglia thalamocortical network. Separately, the BGTC network has been implicated in non-speech beat and rhythm perception. Supporting a link between the two sets of findings, children who stutter exhibit poorer auditory rhythm discrimination compared to non-stutterers, especially for complex rhythms without a consistently marked beat. For adults who stutter (AWS), data showing a link between st…

Stuttering is a variable speech disorder whose brain mechanisms remain unknown. Sensorimotor brain circuits, critical in motor-speech control, including the prediction and monitoring of speech consequences, have been linked to the disorder. Despite considerable advances, it remains unclear whether auditory neural circuits relate to stuttering severity, and whether interventions to persons who stutter can induce underlying brain changes. We employed electroencephalography (EEG), in a group of persons who stutter (PWS), in combination with auditory probes to tap onto the relevance of auditory co…

Developmental stuttering is a speech disfluency disorder characterized by repetitions, prolongations, and blocks of speech. While a number of neuroimaging studies have identified alterations in localized brain activation during speaking in persons with stuttering (PWS), it is unclear whether neuroimaging evidence converges on alterations in structural integrity of white matter and functional connectivity (FC) among multiple regions involved in supporting fluent speech. In the present study, we conducted coordinate-based meta-analyses according to the PRISMA guidelines for available publication…

The purpose of this study was to investigate the benefits and challenges of the tele-speech therapy from the perspective of patients who stutter, and their parents. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 patients and three parents in two rehabilitation centers. Data were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis approach proposed by Graneheim and Lundman. Seven categories were determined: accessible treatment, motivation of comfort in tele-speech therapy, challenges of tele-therapy, satisfaction, virtual competency, lower quality compared to face-to-face therapy, and uncertainty

Stuttering is one of the most well-known speech disorders, but the underlying neurological mechanisms are debated. In addition to genetic factors, there are also major non-genetic contributions. It is here proposed that infection with group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus (GAS) was a major underlying cause of stuttering until the mid-1900s when penicillin was introduced in 1943. The main mechanism proposed is an autoimmune reaction from tonsillitis, targeting specific molecules, for example within the basal ganglia. It is here also proposed that GAS infections may have continued to cause stutte…
