Deferoxamine-Soaked Suture Improves Angiogenesis and Repair Potential After Acute Injury of the Chicken Achilles Tendon.

BACKGROUND: A major obstacle to the treatment of soft tissue injuries is the hypovascular nature of the tissues. Deferoxamine (DFO) has been shown to stimulate angiogenesis by limiting the degradation of intracellular hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha. HYPOTHESIS: DFO-saturated suture would induce angiogenesis and improve the markers of early healing in an Achilles tendon repair model. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Broiler hens were randomly assigned to the control (CTL) group or DFO group (n = 9 per group). The right Achilles tendon was partially transected at its midd

Chronic Traumatic Sagittal Band Injury with Extensor Tendon Dislocation: Report of a Case and New Surgical Technique.

Chronic sagittal band injury with tendon dislocation of the extensor digitorum communis in the hand often requires operative stabilization. Various surgical techniques have been reported to repair and reconstruct the sagittal band. Nonetheless, most of the techniques are technically demanding and require donor graft. In this case report, we report a novel surgical technique to centralize and stabilize the tendon by reattaching the radial sagittal band with anchor sutures. The advantages of this new technique are simple, no donor morbidity and stable repair to restore the normal biomechanics of

Acute multiple flexor tendon injury and carpal tunnel syndrome after open distal radius fracture.

Although the rupture of extensor tendons after distal radius fractures is well described, acute flexor tendon ruptures are much less common. We report a case of acute rupture of the flexor pollicis longus and flexor carpi radialis tendons with acute carpal tunnel syndrome after a Gustilo-Anderson type II open distal radius fracture. We reviewed the literature to identify risk factors for tendon rupture and the development of carpal tunnel syndrome.

[Bony avulsion of the extensor carpi radialis longus tendon from the base of the second metacarpal: A rare injury].

We report on a 19-year-old male patient with a rare injury: a basis fracture of the second metacarpal with avulsion of the extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) tendon. The patient was treated with open reduction and internal plate fixation of the fragment. The functional results after 10 months of follow-up were pronation/supination 90/0/90° (90/0/90°), extension/flexion 70/0/70° (70/0/70°) radial/ulnar duction 20/0/40° (25/0/40°), bilateral grip strength was 115 kPa. The patient suffered no pain at all. The Mayo wrist score reached 100 points. Radiologically, the fracture was consolidated.Co

The accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance arthrogram versus arthroscopy in the diagnosis of subscapularis tendon injury.

PURPOSE: The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting subscapularis tears identified during the gold standard of arthroscopy and determine whether MRI can reliably predict which patients have subscapularis tears. A second purpose was to determine whether magnetic resonance (MR) arthrograms could better identify a subscapularis tear than conventional MRI. METHODS: This was a retrospective study evaluating 39 consecutive patients (40 shoulders) who had a preoperative 1.5-T MRI study and underwent an arthroscopic subsca

Lateral ankle triad: the triple injury of ankle synovitis, lateral ankle instability, and peroneal tendon tear.

Many articles have been published that discuss various lateral ankle injuries and specific lateral ankle pathology. The purpose of this article is to explore and present a specific combination of findings that the author's multiphysician practice has noticed on a frequently recurring basis. The triple injury of ankle synovitis, ankle instability, and peroneal tendon tear can be termed the Lateral Ankle Triad. While it is common to find each of these specific injuries individually, they are often found in combination.

Extensor tendon injury to the index and middle finger secondary to Kirschner wire insertion for a distal radial fracture.

We describe a case with the highly unusual complication of attritional ruptures to both the extensor tendons to the index and middle finger following Kirschner wire placements for a distal radial fracture. This particular complication has never been previously described in the literature. We also review the literature, identifying certain techniques in the management of distal radial fractures with Kirschner wires which are considered to increase the risk of tendonous or neurovascular injury. Finally, recommendations are made that should reduce the complications of iatrogenic soft tissue injur

Biomechanical influence of the vincula tendinum on digital motion after isolated flexor tendon injury: a cadaveric study.

PURPOSE: The vincula are specialized mesotendinous structures attaching to the flexor tendons of the hand. In addition to providing vascular supply to the tendons, the vincula can be mechanically important. The purpose of this study was to quantify the influence of intact vincula on digital flexion after flexor tendon laceration and to assess the ultimate strength and stiffness of the vincula. METHODS: The index, middle, and ring fingers of 12 fresh-frozen cadaveric fingers were dissected free at the level of the metacarpophalangeal joint, preserving at least 10 cm of the flexor and extensor

Flap coverage of dorsum of hand associated with extensor tendons injuries: A completely vascularized single-stage reconstruction.

This study reports results in 12 patients treated with "completely vascularized single-stage approaches," so defined because skin, tendon, and nerve are transferred as a compound flap, and all are vascularized. A free dorsalis pedis cutaneotendinous flap was used in 7 patients, while a radial forearm cutaneotendinous island flap was transposed in 5 patients. A dorsalis pedis flap provides four vascularized extensor tendons (extensor digitorum comunis tendons), and the radial artery flap permits the inclusion of one completely vascularized tendon (palmaris longus) and two "strips" of vasculariz

Collagen Cross-Linking in Tendons: The Role of Lysyl Oxidase and Posttranslational Modifications in Injury, Aging, and Congenital Disorders.

Tendons enable movements by transmitting forces from muscle to bone, requiring highly specialized material properties for their mechanically demanding functions. Unfortunately, tendon material properties are frequently compromised by physical overuse or genetic aberrations. Lysyl oxidase (LOX)-mediated collagen cross-linking, which is governed by collagen posttranslational modifications (PTMs), is a critical regulator of tendon material properties. Despite studies implicating roles for LOX-mediated cross-linking and underlying PTMs in tendon material properties, these mechanisms are not well u

Proximal patellar tendon injury with avulsed periosteal sleeve: A case report and long-term follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Acute patellar tendon injuries in children are rare but increasing due to more high-energy sports participation. These injuries often involve bony fractures, with isolated tendon avulsions being uncommon. Timely diagnosis and surgical intervention are essential to restore knee function and pre-injury activity levels. CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old male student-athlete was brought to the hospital after his right knee buckled while playing football. He exhibited significant tenderness, swelling, and an inability to actively extend the knee. Clinically, a palpable gap below the i

Rapamycin facilitates healing of the tendon-bone interface in an aging rat model of chronic rotator cuff injury.

BACKGROUND: Tendon-bone interface (TBI) healing in chronic rotator cuff injury (CRCI) in older individuals is a common clinical challenge due to cellular senescence, as well as decreased tissue repair and regeneration. Many studies have demonstrated the antiaging, improved tissue repair, and bone regeneration properties of rapamycin (RPM) in multiple age-related diseases. This study aimed to explore the effects of RPM on TBI healing after CRCI in an aging rat model. METHODS: A CRCI model was established in 60 Sprague-Dawley rats (24 months old). Rats were then randomly allocated into the cont

Retrospective Study on the Risk of Nerve Injury After Distal Biceps Tendon Repair Using Cortical Button.

BACKGROUND: Distal biceps tendon ruptures are relatively rare injuries that typically require surgical intervention to restore flexion and supination strength. Concerns have been raised regarding the risk of nerve injuries, particularly the posterior interosseous nerve (PIN), associated with the use of cortical buttons in distal biceps repair. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of PIN injury as well as injuries to the lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm and superficial branch of the radial nerve following distal biceps repair using cortical buttons. METHODS: A retrospective review
