Increased resting state functional connectivity in the default mode network in recovered anorexia nervosa.

Functional brain imaging studies have shown abnormal neural activity in individuals recovered from anorexia nervosa (AN) during both cognitive and emotional task paradigms. It has been suggested that this abnormal activity which persists into recovery might underpin the neurobiology of the disorder and constitute a neural biomarker for AN. However, no study to date has assessed functional changes in neural networks in the absence of task-induced activity in those recovered from AN. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whole brain resting state functional connectivity in nonmedic

Ambient intelligence-based monitoring of staff and patient activity in the intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Caregiver workload in the ICU setting is difficult to numerically quantify. Ambient Intelligence utilises computer vision-guided neural networks to continuously monitor multiple datapoints in video feeds, has become increasingly efficient at automatically tracking various aspects of human movement. OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility of using Ambient Intelligence to track and quantify allpatient and caregiver activity within a bedspace over the course of an ICU admission and also to establish patient specific factors, and environmental factors such as time ofday, that might cont

Branched Latent Neural Maps.

We introduce Branched Latent Neural Maps (BLNMs) to learn finite dimensional input-output maps encoding complex physical processes. A BLNM is defined by a simple and compact feedforward partially-connected neural network that structurally disentangles inputs with different intrinsic roles, such as the time variable from model parameters of a differential equation, while transferring them into a generic field of interest. BLNMs leverage latent outputs to enhance the learned dynamics and break the curse of dimensionality by showing excellent in-distribution generalization properties with small t

Integrative Transcriptomics, Machine Learning, and Molecular Dynamics Reveal Honghua Longdan (Gentiana rhodantha)‑Modulated Therapeutic Targets in Bladder Cancer.

Bladder cancer (BC) has a high recurrence rate and marked molecular heterogeneity, yet effective biomarkers and druggable targets remain scarce. Honghua Longdan (Gentiana rhodantha Franch., GR), a traditional Chinese medicine, exhibits antitumor activity, but its therapeutic targets and mechanisms in BC remain poorly defined. Here, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in BC from TCGA-BLCA and GEO were integrated with weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) to identify BC-related gene modules. Active GR-derived compounds were obtained from HERB v 2.0 and SymMap. Three machine-learn

Exploring spiking neural networks for deep reinforcement learning in robotic tasks.

Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) stand as the third generation of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), mirroring the functionality of the mammalian brain more closely than their predecessors. Their computational units, spiking neurons, characterized by Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs), allow for dynamic system representation, with spikes serving as the medium for asynchronous communication among neurons. Due to their inherent ability to capture input dynamics, SNNs hold great promise for deep networks in Reinforcement Learning (RL) tasks. Deep RL (DRL), and in particular Proximal Policy Opti

High-Throughput Screening of Promising Redox-Active Molecules with MolGAT.

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) have emerged as a promising option for large-scale energy storage, owing to their high energy density, low cost, and environmental benefits. However, the identification of organic compounds with high redox activity, aqueous solubility, stability, and fast redox kinetics is a crucial and challenging step in developing an RFB technology. Density functional theory-based computational materials prediction and screening is a time-consuming and computationally expensive technique, yet it has a high success rate. To speed up the discovery of new materials with desired prop

Enhanced Diagnosis of Pneumothorax with an Improved Real-Time Augmentation for Imbalanced Chest X-rays Data Based on DCNN.

Pneumothorax is a common pulmonary disease that can lead to dyspnea and can be life-threatening. X-ray examination is the main means to diagnose this disease. Computer-aided diagnosis of pneumothorax on chest X-ray, as a prerequisite for a timely cure, has been widely studied, but it is still not satisfactory to achieve highly accurate results. In this paper, an image classification algorithm based on the deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) is proposed for high-resolution medical image analysis of pneumothorax X-rays, which features a Network In Network (NIN) for cleaning the data, random

Functional Connectivity of the Dorsal Attention Network Predicts Selective Attention in 4-7 year-old Girls.

Early childhood is a period of profound neural development and remodeling during which attention skills undergo rapid maturation. Attention networks have been extensively studied in the adult brain, yet relatively little is known about changes in early childhood, and their relation to cognitive development. We investigated the association between age and functional connectivity (FC) within the dorsal attention network (DAN) and the association between FC and attention skills in early childhood. Functional magnetic resonance imaging data was collected during passive viewing in 44 typically deve

Connectivity network measures predict volumetric atrophy in mild cognitive impairment.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by cortical atrophy and disrupted anatomic connectivity, and leads to abnormal interactions between neural systems. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and graph theory can be used to evaluate major brain networks and detect signs of a breakdown in network connectivity. In a longitudinal study using both DWI and standard magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we assessed baseline white-matter connectivity patterns in 30 subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI, mean age 71.8 ± 7.5 years, 18 males and 12 females) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging In

Drug Repositioning for Amyloid Transthyretin Amyloidosis by Interactome Network Corrected by Graph Neural Networks and Transcriptome Analysis.

Amyloid transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidosis caused by transthyretin misfolded into amyloid deposits in nerve and heart is a progressive rare disease. The unknown pathogenesis and the lack of therapy make the 5-year survival prognosis extremely poor. Currently available ATTR drugs can only relieve symptoms and slow down progression, but no drug has demonstrated curable effect for this disease. The growing volume of pharmacological data and large-scale genome and transcriptome data bring new opportunities to find potential new ATTR drugs through computational drug repositioning. We collected the AT

Loss aversion and evidence accumulation in short-video addiction: A behavioral and neuroimaging investigation.

Excessive use of short-video platforms not only impairs decision-making processes but also predisposes individuals to addictive behaviors. This study investigated the relationship between short-video addiction (SVA) symptoms and loss aversion (LA), delving into the underlying computational and neural mechanisms using the drift diffusion model (DDM) and the inter-subject representational similarity analysis (IS-RSA). Behavioral analyses revealed a significant negative correlation between SVA symptoms and the LA coefficient (lnλ). Additionally, the DDM-based drift rate (v) was found to mediate t

In-Memory Mathematical Operations with Spin-Orbit Torque Devices.

Analog arithmetic operations are the most fundamental mathematical operations used in image and signal processing as well as artificial intelligence (AI).  In-memory computing (IMC) offers a high performance and energy-efficient computing paradigm. To date, in-memory analog arithmetic operations with emerging nonvolatile devices are usually implemented using discrete components, which limits the scalability and blocks large scale integration. Here, a prototypical implementation of in-memory analog arithmetic operations (summation, subtraction and multiplication) is experimentally demonstrated,

Neural basis of three dimensions of agitated behaviors in patients with Alzheimer disease.

BACKGROUND: Agitated behaviors are frequently observed in patients with Alzheimer disease (AD). The neural substrate underlying the agitated behaviors in dementia is unclear. We hypothesized that different dimensions of agitated behaviors are mediated by distinct neural systems. METHODS: All the patients (n=32) underwent single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Using the Agitated Behavior in Dementia scale, we identified the relationships between regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) patterns and the presence of each of three dimensions of agitated behavior (physically agitated behav

Predicting the fMRI Signal Fluctuation with Recurrent Neural Networks Trained on Vascular Network Dynamics.

Resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) studies have revealed specific low-frequency hemodynamic signal fluctuations (<0.1 Hz) in the brain, which could be related to neuronal oscillations through the neurovascular coupling mechanism. Given the vascular origin of the fMRI signal, it remains challenging to separate the neural correlates of global rs-fMRI signal fluctuations from other confounding sources. However, the slow-oscillation detected from individual vessels by single-vessel fMRI presents strong correlation to neural oscillations. Here, we use recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to predict

[The use of artificial neural networks in evaluation of posturographic data].

BACKGROUND: Posturography methods have been applied in clinical neurootology to evaluate the equilibrium function of patients. Methods of statistical analysis play an important role for improving data processing and to support the interpretation of the results. In contrast to conventional statistics, artificial neural networks are model-free and non-parametric. The aim of the presented study was to investigate how accurately these methods are able to discriminate between healthy and equilibrium-disturbed subjects. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 51 healthy volunteers participated in this study. 2 stati

Automated contouring for breast cancer radiotherapy in the isocentric lateral decubitus position: a neural network-based solution for enhanced precision and efficiency.

BACKGROUND: Adjuvant radiotherapy is essential for reducing local recurrence and improving survival in breast cancer patients, but it carries a risk of ischemic cardiac toxicity, which increases with heart exposure. The isocentric lateral decubitus position, where the breast rests flat on a support, reduces heart exposure and leads to delivery of a more uniform dose. This position is particularly beneficial for patients with unique anatomies, such as those with pectus excavatum or larger breast sizes. While artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for autocontouring have shown promise, they hav
