Automated dynamic motion correction improves repeatability and reproducibility of myocardial blood flow quantification with rubidium-82 PET imaging.

BACKGROUND: Patient motion reduces the accuracy of PET myocardial blood flow (MBF) measurements. This study evaluated the effect of automatic motion correction on test-retest repeatability and inter-observer variability in a clinically relevant population. METHODS: Patients with known or suspected CAD underwent repeat rest 82Rb PET scans within minutes as part of their scheduled rest-stress perfusion study. Two trained observers evaluated the presence of heart motion in each scan. Global LV and per-vessel MBF were computed from the dynamic rest images before and after automatic motion correct…

Fetal blockade of nicotinic acetylcholine transmission causes autism-like impairment of biological motion preference in the neonatal chick.

Several environmental chemicals are suspected risk factors for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including valproic acid (VPA) and pesticides acting on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), if administered during pregnancy. However, their target processes in fetal neuro-development are unknown. We report that the injection of VPA into the fetus impaired imprinting to an artificial object in neonatal chicks, while a predisposed preference for biological motion (BM) remained intact. Blockade of nAChRs acted oppositely, sparing imprinting and impairing BM preference. Beside ketamine and tuboc…

Stroboscopic lighting with intensity synchronized to rotation velocity alleviates motion sickness gastrointestinal symptoms and motor disorders in rats.

Motion sickness (MS) is caused by mismatch between conflicted motion perception produced by motion challenges and expected "internal model" of integrated motion sensory pattern formed under normal condition in the brain. Stroboscopic light could reduce MS nausea symptom via increasing fixation ability for gaze stabilization to reduce visuo-vestibular confliction triggered by distorted vision during locomotion. This study tried to clarify whether MS induced by passive motion could be alleviated by stroboscopic light with emitting rate and intensity synchronized to acceleration-deceleration phas…

Mechanical Linkage between Achilles Tendon and Plantar Fascia Accounts for Range of Motion of Human Ankle-Foot Complex.

PURPOSE: The human ankle-foot complex possesses a passive range of motion (ROM) through changes in tibiocalcaneal ( θcal ) and foot arch ( θarch ) angles. Based on the anatomical linkage between the Achilles tendon (AT) and plantar fascia (PF), we hypothesized that AT and PF with different mechanical properties conjointly modulate the passive ROM of the human ankle-foot complex. We examined the association of AT and PF stiffness with passive ankle-foot ROM and further addressed differences between sexes. METHODS: A series of sagittal magnetic resonance images of the foot and passive ankle pla…

Evaluation of dynamic spinal alignment changes and compensation using three-dimensional gait motion analysis for dropped head syndrome.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Dynamic kinematic evaluation of spino-pelvic alignment during gait using three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis has been proposed for adult spinal thoracolumbar deformity. That is because conventional full-spine radiographs cannot be used to evaluate dynamic factors. However, dynamic changes in spino-pelvic alignment during gait for dropped head syndrome (DHS) have not been studied using this approach. PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the dynamic changes in spinal-pelvic alignment during gait in patients with DHS using 3D motion analysis. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective re…

Case Studies in Physiology: Using premature ventricular contractions to understand the regulation of carotid artery longitudinal wall motion.

Recent observations have identified a distinct longitudinal motion pattern of the common carotid artery, where the wall oscillates along its length both with (anterograde) and against (retrograde) the direction of blood flow. The regulation of the longitudinal pattern remains largely undetermined, in part due to difficulty uncoupling local pressure and flow stimuli from upstream energy sources. In this case study of a 29-yr-old male, we examine the regulation of longitudinal wall motion from the perspective of spontaneous premature ventricular contractions (PVCs). With respect to the pre-PVC b…

Robotically aligned optical coherence tomography with 5 degree of freedom eye tracking for subject motion and gaze compensation.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has revolutionized diagnostics in ophthalmology. However, OCT requires a trained operator and patient cooperation to carefully align a scanner with the subject's eye and orient it in such a way that it images a desired region of interest at the retina. With the goal of automating this process of orienting and aligning the scanner, we developed a robot-mounted OCT scanner that automatically aligned with the pupil while matching its optical axis with the target region of interest at the retina. The system used two 3D cameras for face tracking and three high-res

White matter deficits correlate with visual motion perception impairments in dyslexic carriers of the DCDC2 genetic risk variant.

Motion perception deficits in dyslexia show a large intersubjective variability, partly reflecting genetic factors influencing brain architecture development. In previous work, we have demonstrated that dyslexic carriers of a mutation of the DCDC2 gene have a very strong impairment in motion perception. In the present study, we investigated structural white matter alterations associated with the poor motion perception in a cohort of twenty dyslexics with a subgroup carrying the DCDC2 gene deletion (DCDC2d+) and a subgroup without the risk variant (DCDC2d-). We observed significant deficits in …

Slow Motion Analysis of Repetitive Tapping (SMART) Test: Measuring Bradykinesia in Recently Diagnosed Parkinson's Disease and Idiopathic Anosmia.

BACKGROUND: Bradykinesia is the defining motor feature of Parkinson's disease (PD). There are limitations to its assessment using standard clinical rating scales, especially in the early stages of PD when a floor effect may be observed. OBJECTIVE: To develop a quantitative method to track repetitive tapping movements and to compare people in the early stages of PD, healthy controls, and individuals with idiopathic anosmia. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 99 participants (early-stage PD = 26, controls = 64, idiopathic anosmia = 9). For each participant, repetitive finger tapping

Lack of Correlation Between Natural Pelvic Tilt Angle with Hip Range of Motion, and Hip Muscle Torque Ratio.

Excessive anterior and posterior pelvic tilts (PT) angles are associated with overuse injuries of the lower limbs and of the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex. There is a lack of evidence that correlates anterior and posterior PT angles with limited hip internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER), and hip muscles torque ratios. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between averaged anterior/posterior PT angle in standing position and hip IR and ER range of motion (ROM), hip adductors and abductors (Add/Abd) torque ratio, and hip flexors and extensors (Flexor/Extensor) torque ra…
