Associations between post-traumatic stress disorder severity, drinking motives, and unhealthy alcohol use among women veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Unhealthy drinking, defined as patterns of alcohol use that increase risk for adverse consequences, is common among US military veterans. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severity has been positively associated with alcohol-related consequences and, less consistently, alcohol consumption among veterans. PTSD is highly heterogeneous, with specific symptom clusters showing varying patterns of association with indices of unhealthy drinking. Drinking motives, particularly coping-related motives, have also been associated with greater alcohol-related consequences and PTSD severity.

Dihydrotestosterone and Finasteride Effects on Alcohol Cue-Elicited Brain Activity in Males With Heavy Episodic Drinking.

Preliminary animal and human studies have shown that blood dihydrotestosterone concentrations are increased in males with alcohol use disorder, and 5α-reductase inhibitors, which decrease dihydrotestosterone concentrations, reduce alcohol consumption. To gain mechanistic insight, we studied the effects of reduced dihydrotestosterone concentrations following pharmacological 5α-reductase inhibition on alcohol cue-elicited brain activity and alcohol craving in males with problematic alcohol use. To this end, this randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover challenge experiment investigated associat

"My Health Is More Important than Drinking": A Qualitative Analysis of Alcohol Use During COVID-19.

(1) Background: Although alcohol use increased overall in the US during the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately 16% of people decreased their drinking. Understanding reasons for decreasing or discontinuing alcohol use during a time of crisis could inform alcohol messaging during future crises. (2) Methods: We conducted hour-long interviews with 26 participants who reported drinking above NIAAA guidelines at the second wave of the National Alcohol Survey COVID Cohort (a longitudinal study of alcohol use during the COVID-19 pandemic). Data were analyzed using codebook thematic analysis. (3) Results

Gendered racial microaggressions and Asian American women's hazardous alcohol use: The role of drinking to cope.

Research indicates the importance of investigating psychosocial factors that contribute to Asian American women's hazardous alcohol use. Thus, the present study examines how gendered racial microaggressions and racial collective self-esteem are associated with hazardous alcohol use among Asian American women, as well as the potential indirect effect of drinking to cope. A final sample of 300 Asian American women filled out a cross-sectional survey consisting of our study variables. Regression analyses indicated that gendered racial microaggressions was positively associated with hazardous alco

Explaining socioeconomic inequalities in alcohol use disorder symptoms: the role of social capital and drinking motives.

INTRODUCTION: Empirical evidence of the buffering effect of social capital and its underlying psychosocial mechanisms on socio-economic inequalities in alcohol use disorder (AUD) symptoms is limited. As socio-economic disadvantages often go together with deficits in resources and considering social capital's beneficial effects on health, we hypothesized a stronger buffering (at high scores) and a cumulative disadvantaged effect (at low scores) of social capital on AUD symptoms among people reporting higher socio-economic disadvantage compared with their more advantaged counterparts. Additional

Reduced drinking as a mechanism for alcohol and violence-related intervention effects from Positive Change©.

PURPOSE: Alcohol use and sexual assault (SA) victimization often co-occur on college campuses, and prevention programs should ideally address both of these public health issues with integrated evidence-based interventions. Positive Change© is a web-based intervention with integrated content on alcohol and SA using personalized normative feedback tailored by participant gender identity and sexual orientation. Building from previous program evaluations, the current study examines alcohol use as a mediator for the intervention effects of Positive Change© on alcohol-related consequences, SA victim

The level of acute alcohol exposure during binge drinking associates with the extent of cardiac response.

INTRODUCTION: The cardiovascular effects of acute alcohol exposure remain incompletely understood, despite its reported association with arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation (AF). The Munich-BREW II study supported a link between excessive alcohol consumption, elevated heart rate, impaired heart rate variability (HRV), and increased arrhythmia incidence. Here, we present sub-analyses exploring how the amount of congested alcohol during binge drinking and the maximum breath alcohol concentration (BAC) influence these findings. METHODS: The Munich-BREW II study is a prospective, single-center c

Links between adolescent binge drinking and midlife alcohol use behaviors by age, sex, and race/ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use is increasing among adults in midlife (i.e., ages 35-60), but few studies examine specific alcohol use behaviors in this age group. We examined measures of typical drinks, maximum drinks, binge drinking, and high-intensity drinking by age, sex, and race/ethnicity among midlife adults, as well as the prospective association between age 18 binge drinking and midlife behaviors. METHODS: Data from 5180 respondents participating in the national Monitoring the Future Panel study who were aged 35-60 in 2022 (followed since they were in 12th grade in 1980-2005) were used to es

Dimensions of binegativity differentially predict drinking to cope motivations and alcohol use severity among bisexual women.

Research indicates that bisexual women experience greater stigmatization and discrimination compared to lesbian women. Such oppression is described as binegativity and is associated with alcohol use among bisexual women. Specifically, previous research has suggested that bisexual women may drink to cope in an effort to self-medicate from experiences of binegativity. Although substantial research has been conducted with regard to drinking behaviors among at-risk groups, research has yet to identify which specific types of binegativity may be most predictive of drinking outcomes among bisexual w

The dynamic nature of injunctive drinking norms and within-person associations with college student alcohol use.

Objective: Perceptions of friends' approval of drinking behaviors (i.e., injunctive drinking norms) play a central role in shaping college students' alcohol use behaviors. However, we know little about the extent that students' perceptions of friends' approval fluctuate over time and whether there are within-person associations between these injunctive norms and alcohol use. To fill this knowledge gap, we estimated within-person variability in perceptions of friends' approval of alcohol use across a 12-month period and examined within-person associations between perceptions of friends' approva

Additive influences of acute early life stress and sex on vulnerability for aversion-resistant alcohol drinking.

Acute early life stress (ELS) alters stress system functioning in adulthood and increases susceptibility to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). The current study assessed the effects of acute, infant ELS on alcohol drinking, including aversion-resistant drinking, in male and female Long Evans rats. Acute ELS was induced using a stress-enhanced fear learning (SEFL) protocol that consisted of 15 footshocks delivered on postnatal day (PND) 17. Alcohol drinking during adolescence and adulthood was measured with a two-bottle choice intermittent alcohol access paradi…

Brief Motivational Interventions Are Associated with Reductions in Alcohol-Induced Blackouts Among Heavy Drinking College Students.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-induced blackouts, a form of anterograde amnesia that restricts the encoding of short-term memories into long-term ones, are among the most severe alcohol-related consequences. College students are at high risk of experiencing alcohol-induced blackouts, and there is a need to determine whether alcohol interventions can effectively reduce blackouts in this population. The current study uses data from 3 randomized clinical trials to examine the effect of various intervention approaches on alcohol-induced blackouts. METHODS: Four interventions were compared over 3 studies: (i

Are Drinking Motives Universal? Characteristics of Motive Types in Alcohol-Dependent Men from Two Diverse Populations.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Since alcohol use disorders are among the most prevalent and destructive mental disorders, it is critical to address factors contributing to their development and maintenance. Drinking motives are relevant driving factors for consumption. Identifying groups of drinkers with similar motivations may help to specialize intervention components and make treatment more effective and efficient. We aimed to identify and describe distinct motive types of drinkers in dependent males from two diverse cultures (Uganda and Germany) and to explore potential differences and similarities

Interactive effects of ovarian steroid hormones on alcohol use and binge drinking across the menstrual cycle.

Patterns and features of substance use and abuse vary across the menstrual cycle in humans. Yet, little work has systematically examined the within-person relationships between ovarian hormone changes and alcohol use across the menstrual cycle. Our study was the first to examine the roles of within-person levels of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) in relation to daily alcohol use and binge drinking in young women. Participants were 22 naturally cycling women, ages 18-22, recruited through a university subject pool who reported any alcohol use and who completed a screening visit assessing s
