Traditional Biofeedback vs. Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy-Is One Clearly Superior?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pelvic floor physical therapy is a worldwide accepted therapy that has been exclusively used to manage many pelvic floor disorders in adults and children. The aim of this review is to suggest to clinicians an updated understanding of this therapeutic approach in management of children with non-neuropathic voiding dysfunction. RECENT FINDINGS: Today, pelvic floor muscle training through biofeedback is widely used as a part of a voiding retraining program aiming to help children with voiding dysfunction which is caused by pelvic floor overactivity. Biofeedback on its own, wit

Patient-Controlled Biofeedback Device for the Treatment of Fecal Incontinence: A Pilot Study.

Although biofeedback has been used as a first-line therapy for fecal incontinence, it is known to be time consuming and demands attendance to a hospital during the whole period of treatment. In this study, we describe a new biofeedback device specifically developed for home treatment of fecal incontinence, which consists of a microprocessor controlled unit able to register and store the anal pressure waves corresponding to exercises performed by patients at home. In order to test the new device, a pilot study including ten patients with fecal incontinence was conducted. Evaluation of patients

Limited acquisition and generalisation of rhotics with ultrasound visual feedback in childhood apraxia.

Ultrasound visual feedback of the tongue is one treatment option for individuals with persisting speech sound errors. This study evaluated children's performance during acquisition and generalisation of American English rhotics using ultrasound feedback. Three children aged 10-13 with persisting speech sound errors associated with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) were treated for 14 one-hour sessions. Two of the participants increased the accuracy of their rhotic production during practise trials within treatment sessions, but none demonstrated generalisation to untreated words. Lack of gener

Biofeedback treatment for Tourette syndrome: a preliminary randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical effectiveness of biofeedback treatment in reducing tics in patients with Tourette syndrome. BACKGROUND: Despite advances in the pharmacologic treatment of patients with Tourette syndrome, many remain troubled by their tics, which may be resistant to multiple medications at tolerable doses. Electrodermal biofeedback is a noninvasive biobehavioral intervention that can be useful in managing neuropsychiatric and neurologic conditions. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial of electrodermal biofeedback training in 21 patients with Tourette syndrome.

The effect of sensory feedback on the timing of movements: evidence from deafferented patients.

The role of sensory feedback in the control of movements was investigated in two deafferented patients with complete loss of cutaneous touch and movement/position sense below the neck and two control groups of different ages. In a synchronized repetitive finger-tapping task in time with a regular auditory pacing signal, the deafferented participants showed a strong influence of extrinsic feedback. In contrast to controls who demonstrated a typical asynchrony between their taps and the pacing signal in all feedback conditions, the deafferented participants, with auditory feedback and visual mon

A preliminary analysis of EMG variance as an index of change in EMG biofeedback treatment of tension-type headache.

The effectiveness of EMG biofeedback training for tension headache has been well established. Previous studies evaluating changes in an average EMG activity score from pre- to posttreatment have not consistently found a relationship between a reduction in average EMG activity and headache improvement at posttreatment. The current study is a preliminary analysis of the utility of EMG variance as another possible mechanism of change. Frontalis EMG average activity and variances from 6 chronic tension-type headache sufferers who demonstrated significant improvement in headache activity at posttre

Outpatient pelvic-floor therapy in girls with daytime incontinence and dysfunctional voiding.

OBJECTIVES: Analysis of an experience in treating girls with dysfunctional voiding with an outpatient pelvic-floor therapy consisting of voiding and drinking schedule, pelvic-floor relaxation biofeedback, instructions on toilet behavior, and uroflowmetry. METHODS: The files of 50 girls (between 6 and 13 years of age) with urodynamically proven dysfunctional voiding who participated in the training program were analyzed retrospectively. Thirty-five girls received anticholinergics during the entire course of the training. The long-term absence of diurnal incontinence was used as the criterion f

The application of electropalatography (EPG) to the remediation of speech disorders in school-aged children and young adults.

Electropalatography (EPG) is one of a number of computer-based biofeedback techniques being applied increasingly and apparently successfully to the treatment of speech pathologies. This paper briefly examines the function of such biofeedback systems within the remediation process and looks in particular at the features of the EPG system which render it a useful therapeutic tool. Details are summarised of a project initiated to evaluate the use of EPG in the management of a large group of speech-disordered children and young adults. Successful applications of the technique are presented by exam

Treatment of faecal incontinence in children with spina bifida by biofeedback and behavioural modification.

Faecal incontinence may lead to serious social and physiological disturbances. Over 90% of patients with spina bifida have varying degrees of neurogenic bowel with disturbances of faecal control. This is a serious habilitation problem in these patients. Three encopretic children with myelomeningocele were treated by Biofeedback operant conditioning and behavioural modification to self-initiate bowel movements. Their neurological levels were T-10; T-11; T-12. Each child had a mean of 10 Biofeedback sessions each of 30-45 minutes, combined with daily behavioural modification. Two patients improv

Fecal incontinence. Effective nonsurgical treatments.

Management of the patient with fecal soiling begins with a careful evaluation of possible contributing factors, followed by anorectal examination, neurologic and psychosocial testing, and workup for chronic diarrhea, if present. In many patients, these procedures should be supplemented by radiologic and manometric studies to determine if structural or functional anorectal abnormalities are present. Therapeutic approaches include behavioral, pharmacologic, and surgical methods, which should be carefully considered in relation to the underlying cause of incontinence. For the experienced physicia

A simple and a complex tic (Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome): their response to EEG sensorimotor rhythm biofeedback training.

This study presents a clinical treatment regime for the treatment of tic manifestation, both simple and complex. The response of a case of simple tic and a case of complex tic (Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome) to EEG sensorimotor rhythm biofeedback training are presented. Specifically, the simple and the complex tic, both of long duration, were eliminated via this EEG biofeedback training procedure. It is hypothesized that this exercising of the sensorimotor cortex resulted in increased activation of this cerebrocortical subsystem and was reflected in increased voluntary muscle control and a

Behavioral and electroencephalographic correlates of 40-Hz EEG biofeedback training in humans.

Two groups of eight adults successfully trained with biofeedback for increases in 40-Hz EEG responses in left or right hemispheres also demonstrated significant 40-Hz EEG increases during baseline periods, and increases in the contralateral hemisphere during training periods. No changes in heart rate, 40-Hz EMG, or 21- or 31-Hz beta, alpha, or theta EEG occurred over training days. Three subjects returning for additional training demonstrated suppression of 40-Hz EEG. A group of four subjects experiencing daily bidirectional training produced substantial within-session control of 40-Hz EEG but

Biofeedback-based cognitive-behavioral treatment compared with occlusal splint for temporomandibular disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive-behavioral treatment has proven efficacy for chronic temporomandibular disorder (TMD). However, most patients receive dental treatment that may not address psychological comorbidities often present in TMD. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of biofeedback-based cognitive-behavioral treatment (BFB-CBT) versus dental treatment with occlusal splint (OS). Moreover, changes in nocturnal masseter muscle activity (NMMA) were investigated. METHODS: Fifty-eight patients with chronic TMD were randomly assigned to receive either 8 weekly sessions of BFB-CBT o
