Epidemic Comparison of Ebola and Zika-the Only Two Neglected Tropical Diseases with Vertical Transmission Potential and Associated with Public Health Emergency of International Concern-among Childbearing Women.

BACKGROUND: Comparative epidemiological evidence on Ebola virus disease (EVD) and Zika virus disease (ZVD) in women of childbearing age (WCBA) is limited, hindering understanding of their mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) potential and maternal-neonatal protection. This study aimed to compare EVD and ZVD epidemiology in WCBA, assess sex-specific differences, and examine the association between ZVD incidence and live births to inform maternal-neonatal protection and disease control. METHODS: Data on incidence, deaths, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disabil

Satisfaction and experience of care among women with abortion-related complications from Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: Although abortion is a frequent event in women’s reproductive life and abortion-related complications have negative consequences for women’s health and wellbeing, little is known about the quality of abortion care. To improve the quality, women’s experience of care and satisfaction, need to be further standardized and studied. This study aims to assess experience and satisfaction with post-abortion care in Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis from the World Health Organization Multi-Country Survey on Abortion. This analysis u

High levels of population genetic differentiation in the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus).

The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is a widely distributed species across coastal and brackish areas of the Neotropical region of the Americas and the Greater Antilles. Available information on patterns of genetic differentiation in C. acutus shows a complex structuring influenced by interspecific interactions (mainly hybridization) and anthropogenic actions (mostly historical hunting, recent poaching, habitat loss and fragmentation, and unintentional translocation of individuals). In this study, we used data on mitochondrial DNA control region and 11 nuclear polymorphic microsatellite

Impact of Saharan Dust on Severe Small for Gestational Births in the Caribbean.

Desert dust transported from the Sahara to the Caribbean generates peak exposures to particulate matter ≤ 10 μm (PM10). We investigated the impact of dust episodes on severe small for gestational-age births in Guadeloupe. The study sample consisted of 911 pregnant women enrolled in the Timoun mother-child cohort. Desert dust exposure was assessed through the mean daily PM10 concentrations averaged over the entire pregnancy. Numerous sociodemographic and medical risk factors were considered as covariates and introduced into multinomial logistic regression models. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculat

Leiomyomas in an African Caribbean hysterectomy population considered to be ethnically related to African Americans.

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyoma has been reported to be a worse problematic disease for African American than Caucasian women in the US. Data are almost non-existent for other populations of African ancestry. Our aim was to investigate the hypothesis of an equivalent influence of ethnicity on uterine leiomyomas for women of a French African-Caribbean population. BASIC PROCEDURES: Retrospective analysis of hysterectomies performed from 2010 to 2015 at the teaching hospital of Guadeloupe (French West Indies), where most inhabitants are of West African origin, was carried out. Data of the 899 hyst

Consumption of barracuda in the Caribbean Sea linked to ciguatera fish poisoning among Filipino seafarers.

INTRODUCTION: Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is common in tropical and subtropical waters. On 13 November 2015, eight Filipino seafarers from a cargo ship sailing in the Caribbean Sea experienced a range of symptoms after consuming a barracuda. Upon their return to the Philippines, an investigation was conducted to describe the cases. METHODS: A case-series was conducted. A CFP case was defined as a previously well individual on the ship who developed at least one gastrointestinal symptom and at least one neurologic manifestation after eating barracuda on 13 November 2015. All cases were admi

Genomic epidemiology reveals multiple introductions of Zika virus into the United States.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is causing an unprecedented epidemic linked to severe congenital abnormalities. In July 2016, mosquito-borne ZIKV transmission was reported in the continental United States; since then, hundreds of locally acquired infections have been reported in Florida. To gain insights into the timing, source, and likely route(s) of ZIKV introduction, we tracked the virus from its first detection in Florida by sequencing ZIKV genomes from infected patients and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. We show that at least 4 introductions, but potentially as many as 40, contributed to the outbreak in Flo

G6PD deficiency in Latin America: systematic review on prevalence and variants.

Plasmodium vivax radical cure requires the use of primaquine (PQ), a drug that induces haemolysis in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficient (G6PDd) individuals, which further hampers malaria control efforts. The aim of this work was to study the G6PDd prevalence and variants in Latin America (LA) and the Caribbean region. A systematic search of the published literature was undertaken in August 2013. Bibliographies of manuscripts were also searched and additional references were identified. Low prevalence rates of G6PDd were documented in Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay, but s…

Travel-related leptospirosis: a series of 15 imported cases.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis belongs to the spectrum of travel-related infections. METHODS: We retrospectively studied all the consecutive cases of travel-related leptospirosis seen in our department between January 2008 and September 2011. Patients were included with a clinical picture compatible with the disease within 21 days after return, the presence of a thermoresistant antigen or IgM antibodies, Elisa ≥ 1 /400, and a positive microagglutination test (MAT) ≥ 1/100. RESULTS: Fifteen leptospirosis cases were evaluated. Exposure occurred in Asia (47%), Africa (20%), the Caribbean (20%), and

Lessons learned from integrated surveillance of measles and rubella in the Caribbean.

The Caribbean subregion was one of the first areas to successfully integrate measles and rubella surveillance, and it can serve as an example to other subregions on how to achieve similar success. The integrated surveillance system, established through strong political commitment by Caribbean countries, is coordinated by the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC). The system, which became operational in January 2000, is designed to detect and investigate patients with fever and rash illness, and also test a blood specimen from each case investigated. During over 9 years of operation, 3733 cases

Liminal identities: Caribbean men who have sex with men in London, UK.

Accounts by 10 Caribbean men who have sex with men living in the UK reveal them to be liminal beings with unstable and unresolved identities. They are between social states: aware they are not heterosexual and not publicly recognised, or in some cases self-accepted, as homosexual. Caribbean-born respondents especially suffer from homophobia, expressing regret and disappointment at their sexuality. They may also experience cognitive dissonance - as they are aware of their conflict with the heteronormative order - they cannot resolve. Religion contributes to homophobia and cognitive dissonance p

[Malaria in Haiti today].

Haiti is the only Caribbean island where malaria, practically always due to Plasmodium falciparum, persists in an epidemic-endemic state. In 1995 Haitian strains of P. falciparum were still sensitive to chloroquine. The principal vector is Anopheles albimanus, but the recent introduction in the south of Haiti of An. Pseudopunctipennis, which is an effective vector of P. falciparum in Central America, requires appropriate entomological surveillance. Essentially rural and seasonal, malaria is increasingly observed in the suburban areas around Port-au-Prince. The epidemiologic indicators have reg
