Investigating the impact of early literacy training on white matter structure in prereaders at risk for dyslexia.

Recent prereading evidence demonstrates that white matter alterations are associated with dyslexia even before the onset of reading instruction. At the same time, remediation of reading difficulties is suggested to be most effective when provided as early as kindergarten, yet evidence is currently lacking on the early neuroanatomical changes associated with such preventive interventions. To address this open question, we investigated white matter changes following early literacy intervention in Dutch-speaking prereaders (aged 5-6 years) with an increased cognitive risk for developing dyslexia.

Computer-based compensation of adult reading disabilities.

We studied the use of computer readers, and especially their speech synthesis component, as a compensatory tool for adults with dyslexia. We first explored the enhancement of reading skills in a group of college students and working adults. Their unaided reading was very slow, and most participants in the study could sustain reading for only short periods. Although their timed comprehension was poor, their untimed comprehension was above average. The computer reader enhanced the reading rate and comprehension of most participants and enabled them to sustain reading longer. The difference betwe

The Potential of the Peptide Drug Semax and Its Derivative for Correcting Pathological Impairments in the Animal Model of Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease, first described over a century ago, is currently among the most common neurodegenerative diseases whose significance is increasingly growing with the aging of populations. Throughout the entire period of its study, no remedies have been found that would be effective in treating - or at least significantly slowing - the pathological process, while being sufficiently safe. In this regard, significant attention is paid to the development and application of natural peptide drugs lacking side effects. The present study assessed the effect of the known neuroprotective peptide Se

Impact of Attention Training on Academic Achievement, Executive Functioning, and Behavior: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience significant difficulties in attention, learning, executive functions, and behavioral regulation. Emerging evidence suggests that computerized cognitive training may remediate these impairments. In a double blind controlled trial, 76 children with IDD (4-11 years) were randomized to either an attention training (n = 38) or control program (n = 38). Both programs were completed at home over a 5-week period. Outcome measures assessed literacy, numeracy, executive functioning, and behavioral/emotional problems, and were con

[Social cognition in schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder: Points of convergence and functional differences].

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia and autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) are two neurodevelopmental disorders that have different symptom presentations, ages of onset and developmental courses. Both schizophrenia and ASD are characterized by marked deficit in communication, social interactions, affects and emotions. Social cognitive impairments in ASD and schizophrenia were demonstrated separately in both disorders. It was reported that these impairments have direct relation with social deficits of both disorders. The apparent similarity between social cognition impairments in ASD and schizophrenia hi

Action video games improve reading abilities and visual-to-auditory attentional shifting in English-speaking children with dyslexia.

Dyslexia is characterized by difficulties in learning to read and there is some evidence that action video games (AVG), without any direct phonological or orthographic stimulation, improve reading efficiency in Italian children with dyslexia. However, the cognitive mechanism underlying this improvement and the extent to which the benefits of AVG training would generalize to deep English orthography, remain two critical questions. During reading acquisition, children have to integrate written letters with speech sounds, rapidly shifting their attention from visual to auditory modality. In our s

Evidence for reading improvement following tDCS treatment in children and adolescents with Dyslexia.

PURPOSE: There is evidence that non-invasive brain stimulation transitorily modulates reading by facilitating the neural pathways underactive in individuals with dyslexia. The study aimed at investigating whether multiple sessions of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) would enhance reading abilities of children and adolescents with dyslexia and whether the effect is long-lasting. METHODS: Eighteen children and adolescents with dyslexia received three 20-minute sessions a week for 6 weeks (18 sessions) of left anodal/right cathodal tDCS set at 1 mA over parieto-temporal regions com

Attention dysfunction subtypes of developmental dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicate that many different aspects of attention are impaired in children diagnosed with developmental dyslexia (DD). The objective of the present study was to identify cognitive profiles of DD on the basis of attentional test performance. MATERIAL/METHODS: 78 children with DD (30 girls, 48 boys, mean age of 12 years ±8 months) and 32 age- and sex-matched non-dyslexic children (14 girls, 18 boys) were examined using a battery of standardized tests of reading, phonological and attentional processes (alertness, covert shift of attention, divided attention, inhibiti

Functional MRI investigation of verbal working memory in adults with anorexia nervosa.

Literature regarding verbal working memory (vWM) in anorexia nervosa (AN) has been inconsistent due to a misunderstanding of the key components of vWM and introduction of confounding stimuli. Furthermore, there are no studies looking at how brain function in people with AN relates to vWM performance. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with a letter n-back paradigm to study the effect of increasing vWM task difficulty on cortical functioning in the largest AN sample to date (n=31). Although the AN group had low BMI and higher anxious and depressive symptomology

The effect of sleepiness on performance monitoring: I know what I am doing, but do I care?

The behavioral, cognitive, and psychophysiological effects of extended wakefulness are well known. As time awake increases, errors become more common and are often attributed to lapses in attention. Such lapses can be reflected in the error-related negativity (Ne/ERN), a negative electroencephalogram deflection occurring after errors and is thought to be related to error detection or response conflict. Following the Ne/ERN, a positive deflection (error positivity, Pe) is also observed and is thought to reflect further evaluation of the error. To elicit Ne/ERNs, the Eriksen Flanker Task was adm

Reaching for Remission: Integrating Complementary and Alternative Strategies into Inflammatory Bowel Disease Management.

Pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing in prevalence in the United States. While medical therapy options continue to expand, patients and their families often inquire about applications of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). In this article, we review the existing literature for a wide variety of CAMs, including mind-body practices, modulation of the gut microbiome, and herbal supplements, which can be integrated into traditional medical treatments. Mind-body practices, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, yoga, and acupuncture, have promising data for improve

Therapeutic potential of berries in age-related neurological disorders.

Aging significantly impacts several age-related neurological problems, such as stroke, brain tumors, oxidative stress, neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and dementia), neuroinflammation, and neurotoxicity. Current treatments for these conditions often come with side effects like hallucinations, dyskinesia, nausea, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal distress. Given the widespread availability and cultural acceptance of natural remedies, research is exploring the potential effectiveness of plants in common medicines. The ancient medical system used many botanical drugs and medici

Chlamydia pneumoniae in Alzheimer's disease pathology.

While recent advances in diagnostics and therapeutics offer promising new approaches for Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis and treatment, there is still an unmet need for an effective remedy, suggesting new avenues of research are required. Besides many plausible etiologies for AD pathogenesis, mounting evidence supports a possible role for microbial infections. Various microbes have been identified in the postmortem brain tissues of human AD patients. Among bacterial pathogens in AD, Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cp) has been well characterized in human AD brains and is a leading candidate for an in

Daily executive functioning in adults with pediatric hemispherectomy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: For young children with intractable epilepsy caused by congenital abnormalities or acquired cortical lesions, pediatric hemispherectomy surgery (pHS) may offer the only path to seizure remediation. Although some sensory and motor outcomes of pHS are highly predictable, the long-term cognitive and functional sequelae of pHS are far more variable. With the aim of identifying potential post-pHS intervention targets, the current study examined daily executive functioning and self-awareness in adults with pHS and broadly intact cognitive outcomes (indicated by average or above

Diffusion tensor imaging: a review for pediatric researchers and clinicians.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a magnetic resonance imaging technique that allows for the visualization and characterization of the white matter tracts of the brain in vivo. DTI does not assess white matter directly. Rather, it capitalizes on the fact that diffusion is isotropic (equal in all directions) in cerebral spinal fluid and cell bodies but anisotropic (greater in one direction than the other directions) in axons that comprise white matter. It provides quantitative information about the degree and direction of water diffusion within individual units of volume within the magnetic res
