INTRODUCTION: Osteomyelitis in children typically affects the metaphysis of long bones, most commonly the femur and tibia. Fibular involvement is rare, accounting for <10% of pediatric osteomyelitis cases. Pan-diaphyseal involvement is even rarer.
CASE REPORT: A 7-year-old girl presented with a chronic discharging sinus, pain, and swelling in the right leg for 10 months following minor trauma. Radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging revealed chronic pan-diaphyseal osteomyelitis of the fibula with a pathological fracture. After failed conservative management, she underwent sequestrectomy an

OBJECTIVES: Multiple treatment modalities exist for treating distal femur fractures. Lateral locked plating has become the method of choice because it prevents loss of reduction due to varus collapse, but has been associated with nonunion rates of up to 30%. Titanium implants may provide a more optimal biomechanical environment for fracture healing. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate nonunion rates and risk factors for nonunion in a series of distal femur fractures stabilized with modern locked titanium implants using all nonlocking diaphyseal fixation. A secondary aim is to evaluate

The management of segmental bone defects of the tibial shaft remains a challenging endeavor for orthopedic surgeons. These defects are usually the result of high energy fractures and are frequently associated with high nonunion and infection rates. Achieving appropriate alignment during intramedullary nailing is crucial and often presents technical hurdles. The scope of this paper is to describe and discuss the intraoperative use of a provisional locking plate in achieving satisfactory reduction in the setting of a large tibial shaft bone defect. This technique presents distinct advantages for

BACKGROUND: When implanting a cemented humeral stem, a reliable method to prevent inappropriate extension and enable pressurization of cement in the intramedullary canal is required. The aim was to assess the outcomes of a dedicated humeral diaphyseal cement restrictor.
METHODS: In total 218 shoulders (207 patients) were included in the study, all of whom underwent a cemented total shoulder arthroplasty and a retrospective review was performed. The primary outcomes of interest were device stability in the medullary canal, successful occlusion of the canal, cement extrusion and quality of ceme

BACKGROUND: Grade III open tibial diaphyseal fractures are challenging to treat and controversy exists on whether to treat them with an intramedullary nail (IMN) or a circular frame (CF). This study aims to compare outcomes for intramedullary nail and circular frame in the treatment of open tibial diaphyseal fractures.
METHODOLOGY: Retrospective study at a major trauma center of all patients admitted with a grade III open tibial diaphyseal fracture between January 2016 and January 2022. The primary outcome measures were major complications: non-union, malunion, refracture, DBI and amputation.

BACKGROUND: Although the intramedullary nail represents the treatment for most tibia diaphyseal fractures, there is no agreement on the configuration of the distal locking screws. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of the configuration of distal locking bolts on the healing of a tibial shaft fracture.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 170 closed fractures of the tibia diaphyseal operated consecutively between 2018 and 2021. Patients with postoperative unacceptable reduction (>5° in any plane or gap >4 mm), nail-canal ratio <0.78, and less than 12 months of follow-up were

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare two techniques for the surgical treatment of diaphyseal fractures in the adult humerus: double-crossed retrograde elastic stable intramedullary nailing (DCR-ESIN) and limited-contact dynamic compression plate (LC-DCP).
METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted at a single hospital. We included 122 patients with diaphyseal fractures of the humerus who had received DCR-ESIN or LC-DCP from January 2011 to January 2017. We compared union rates, union times, disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH) scores at the postoperative 1-yea

INTRODUCTION: Tibial fractures are common long bone injuries, often surgically fixed with intramedullary nails. Modern intramedullary tibial nails allow for two different fixation modes, namely static and dynamic modes. While studies have demonstrated benefits of using either fixation modes, there has been no consensus as to which fixation mode would produce better outcomes and less complications. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to compare the efficacy and safety of dynamic versus static fixation of intramedullary nails in the operative fixation of tibial diaphyseal fractures.

Every year over 330,000 people are hospitalized for hip fractures in the US. Of those patients, approximately 4-5% of patients with hip fractures present with a concomitant upper extremity fracture. Upper extremity (UE) fractures account for an estimated 2 million fractures a year. The number of hip fractures is projected to double by 2050. There is evidence that the presence of a concomitant upper extremity fracture results in an increased hospital length of stay (LOS), lower functional capacity upon discharge and higher mortality rates than seen with hip fractures in isolation. Additionally,
