Ebstein's anomaly is a complex malformation involving the tricuspid valve and the right ventricle. Various surgical techniques, either repair or replacement of the abnormal tricuspid valve, have been used with variable results. In an attempt to enlarge the indications of conservative procedures, we developed a technique of repair that comprises the reconstruction of a normally shaped right ventricle and the repositioning of the tricuspid valve at the normal level. In a series of 14 patients operated on between January 1980 and December 1986 in our institution, only one patient with an associat

Preoperative, perioperative and postoperative arrhythmias in 52 consecutive patients who underwent operation for Ebstein's anomaly were reviewed. There were 25 male and 27 female patients (mean age 18 years, range 11 months to 64 years). Thirty-four patients had one or more documented arrhythmias preoperatively (18 had paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, 10 had paroxysmal atrial fibrillation or flutter, 13 had ventricular arrhythmia and 3 had high grade atrioventricular block). Seven patients without documented arrhythmias had a history typical of tachyarrhythmias. During the perioperativ

There is already a complete description available of the Ebstein's anomaly, and the criteria of its identification have also been thoroughly elaborated. An accurate quantitative assessment of anatomical changes determined morphometrically, however, would help to gain a better insight into the anatomofunctional features of the defect and would present an objective substantiation for selecting the surgery tactics. For this purpose 20 hearts with Ebstein's anomaly and 15 normal hearts were studied morphometrically. The measurements have shown that this anomaly is characterized by an enlargement o

Ebstein's anomaly with pulmonary atresia was diagnosed in utero for the first time by fetal echocardiography. The fetus, examined at 35 weeks' gestation, had no extracardiac sonographic evidence of heart failure, but the heart filled the anterior portion of the chest. Two-dimensional echocardiography revealed a huge right atrium. The tricuspid valve, instead of originating from the anulus, was demonstrated as originating from the wall of the right ventricle, thus dividing the ventricle into two parts: the true ventricle and the "atrialized portion" of the right ventricle. These features corres

The hearts from 10 necropsy patients with Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve were examined for abnormalities of the mitral valve. Five patients were under 1 year of age and none had an abnormal mitral valve. The other five patients were ages 18 to 72 years (mean 36 years); all had focal fibrous thickening of the mitral leaflets and three had prolapse of one or both mitral leaflets. Only one of the three patients with mitral valve prolapse had an atrial septal defect (secundum type), indicating that the association of mitral valve prolapse with Ebstein's anomaly is not due to the presence

Echocardiographic studies of a 23-year-old man with Ebstein's anomaly and type B Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome showed almost simultaneous closure of the tricuspid and mitral valve. After administration of edrophonium chloride, the tricuspid valve closed 20 msec earlier than the mitral valve. However, the closure of the mitral valve preceded that of the tricuspid valve after administration of ajmaline and atropine sulfate by 90 msec and 60 msec, respectively, concomitant with obliteration of preexcitation. From these observations, the simultaneous closure of the tricuspid and mitral valve of t

A case of right ventricular endomyocardial fibrosis simulating Ebstein's anomaly is described. The clinical features, chest x-ray, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, intracardiac electrogram, and the angiogram were all compatible with Ebstein's malformation. A correct diagnosis was subsequently made in the operating room. Reasons for the difficulties in the differential diagnoses of these two entities are discussed.

Background: Ebstein anomaly (EA) is a rare congenital heart disease characterized by the apical displacement of the tricuspid leaflets, creating an enlarged functional right atrium. Supraventricular arrhythmias (SVA) are common, and catheter ablation remains challenging. SVA is considered a risk factor for sudden cardiac death in this population. Still, there are very few real-life data on the impact of SVA treated invasively or conservatively on a patient's prognosis. We aimed to analyze the incidence of SVA in adults with EA, evaluate the effectiveness of catheter ablation, and analyze the i…
