The purpose of this study was to examine reactions to participating in trauma and addiction research among women in a sober living home. Participants were 59 women who completed a comprehensive survey battery while living in the sober living home. The survey assessed women's victimization and addiction history along with current psychological and behavioral health symptoms and resilience characteristics. At the end of the survey, women were asked about their reactions to participating in the survey. Results suggested that whereas 40.7% (n = 24) of women reported being upset immediately after c

Patterns and Correlates of New Drug Initiation among Female Exotic Dancers: The Contribution of Occupational and Structural Risks.

Introduction: Exotic dance clubs (EDCs) can play pivotal roles in the production of drug-related risks for female exotic dancers (FED). We aimed to characterize the structural and occupational factors associated with new drug initiation post-EDC entry among new FED (N = 117) in Baltimore, Maryland. Materials and Methods: Logistic regression models tested the associations of new drug uptake, measured as initiating any illicit drug (including non-prescribed and diverted prescription narcotics) not used prior to EDC employment, with structural (e.g. debt sources, housing instability) and occupati…

Incident stressful and traumatic life events and human immunodeficiency virus sexual transmission risk behaviors in a longitudinal, multisite cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between incident stressful life events (e.g., sexual and physical assault; housing instability; and major financial, employment, and legal difficulties) and unprotected anal or vaginal sexual intercourse (unprotected sex) among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (PLWHA). METHODS: We assessed incident stressful events and unprotected sex over 27 months in 611 participants in an eight-site, five-state study in the Southeast United States. Using mixed-effects logistic models and separately estimating betwe…

Though many participants faced barriers not easily addressed by this intervention (for example, housing instability), formally integrating support partners into the intervention helped to address many other common adherence barriers. Analysis of Skeletal-Related Events in a Liaison Treatment for Metastatic Spinal Tumors: A 10-Year Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Skeletal-related events (SREs), including pathological fractures and spinal cord compression, significantly reduce the quality of life and survival in patients with metastatic spinal tumors. Although multidisciplinary "liaison treatment" has been implemented at our institution to detect and manage all metastatic spinal lesions, some patients still develop SREs. This study aims to analyze the characteristics and circumstances of patients who experienced SREs despite this system, with particular focus on referrals from other hospitals. METHODS: We reviewed patients who developed S

Acute ankle sprain in a mouse model.

INTRODUCTION: Ankle sprains remain the most common orthopedic pathology. Conducting long-term studies in humans is difficult and costly, so the long-term consequences of an ankle sprain are not entirely known. PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to develop and test a mechanical ankle instability model in mice. METHODS: Thirty male mice (CBA/2J) were randomly placed into one of three groups: the transected calcaneal fibular ligament (CFL) group, the transected anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL)/CFL group, and a SHAM group. Three days after surgery, all of the mice were individually hous

Housing Insecurity, Behavioral Health Disorders, and Acute Care Utilization: A Cross-Sectional Study of Medicaid Members in the Portland, Oregon Metropolitan Area.

Housing insecurity and substance use disorder (SUD) are critical public health issues in the USA, with significant implications for health outcomes. This study evaluated the intersection of housing insecurity, SUD, and psychosis among Medicaid enrollees in an urban center in Oregon. Using data from Health Share of Oregon, we identified three distinct cohorts-individuals with housing insecurity, those with SUD/psychosis, and those with both conditions. Key outcomes included inpatient admission rates, average lengths of stay, and 30-day readmissions. The findings indicate that housing-insecure i

What is the radiation before 5G? A correlation study between measurements in situ and in real time and epidemiological indicators in Vallecas, Madrid.

BACKGROUND: Exposure of the general population to electromagnetic radiation emitted by mobile phone base stations is one of the greater concerns of residents affected by the proximity of these structures due to the possible relationship between radiated levels and health indicators. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to find a possible relationship between some health indicators and electromagnetic radiation measurements. METHODS: A total of 268 surveys, own design, were completed by residents of a Madrid neighborhood surrounded by nine telephone antennas, and 105 measurements of electromagnetic r

Pathways to homelessness among the mentally ill.

BACKGROUND: Persons with mental illness are over-represented among the homeless relative to the general population, and mental illness is most likely one of many vulnerabilities that confer risk for homelessness. METHOD: This paper elucidates the pathways to homelessness for persons with mental illness by comparing and contrasting groups of mentally ill homeless persons, non-mentally ill homeless persons, and housed mentally ill persons drawn from RAND's Course of Homelessness (COH) study and the Epidemiological Catchment Area (ECA) survey. RESULTS: Homeless persons share childhood histories

Hemolytic anemias associated with deficient or dysfunctional spectrin.

Elliptocytes from patients with hereditary elliptocytosis (HE) form elliptical ghosts and membrane skeletons. The composition of HE skeletons is quantitatively normal; however, in some but not all kindreds the major membrane skeletal protein, spectrin, is abnormally heat-sensitive, presumably due to a molecular defect which diminishes its conformational stability. Red cells from four mutants of the common house mouse (Mus musculus) with severe, recessive hemolytic anemias show marked membrane budding, fragmentation, and spherocytosis, which suggest membrane instability. Ghosts spontaneously ve

Threads That Hold: Building a Community Cancer Care Ecosystem in a Border Region.

Delivering effective cancer care increasingly depends on a health system's ability to anticipate and address social needs that interrupt access, adherence, and continuity. In El Paso, Texas-a U.S.-Mexico border region shaped by geographic distance, rural catchment areas, a large military-connected population, persistent poverty, and concentrated social vulnerability-those needs are routine, not exceptional (ATSDR 2024; City-Data 2023; City of El Paso 2023; Esri Federal Data 2002). Social contributions as risk factors for readmissions after lung transplantation: Clinical and financial implications.

INTRODUCTION: Lung transplant is associated with a 60%-80% 1-year post-transplant readmission rate. Social contributors represent potentially modifiable risk factors for readmission. METHODS: Retrospective single-center study of lung transplant patients surviving to discharge between 2/2/2013 and 4/11/2023. Two reviewers categorized 1-year readmissions into two groups: social (eg, housing instability or rejection due to medication non-compliance) and non-social (eg, pancreatitis)…
