In a series of experiments with pigs the completely obstructed renal pelvis was infused with Ringer's lactate at a constant rate of 2 ml/min. At various pressure levels (lower than 50 mm Hg) the relations pressure vs infused volume and pressure vs actual intrapelvic volume and the effects on the intrapelvic pressure of rapid total or partial extraction of the actual volume were measured. ABSTRACT: Neonatal diarrhea in calves frequently results in severe metabolic disturbances, particularly D-lactic acidosis and hyperkalemia. These conditions are associated with weakness, apathy, and, in the case of D-lactic acidosis, with neurological deficits such as impairment of the palpebral reflex. Severe hyperkalemia can be accompanied by potentially life-threatening cardiac conduction abnormalities. The second part of this review article provides a narrative overview of therapeutic approaches as well as the prognostic relevance of these key metabolic disorders.

The effects of four different irrigation solutions for preparation of colonoscopy were assessed in 64 patients. Using saline lavage solutions similar to plasma led to predominant symptoms of volume overload. Body weight transitorily increased by 1.7 +/- 0.2 kg, water and electrolytes were retained. The origin of systolic or diastolic musical murmurs was investigated by means of echo-doppler examination in 51 patients with various cardiac diseases. In all cases a typical doppler spectrum was identified, showing bi-directional clusters of frequencies which were concentric in systole and parallel in diastole. The doppler audio signal was musical. A similar echo-doppler signal was obtained by a diapason vibrating in isotonic solution. These data allowed us to identify the site of the vibrating cardiac structure causing the typical echo-doppler spectrum and characteristic audio signal.

In a group of 16 women admitted for missed abortion, missed labor or antepartum fetal death, we induced abortion or labor by means of extraamniotic infusion of isotonic saline solution, using a Foley catheter inserted through the cervix. Eight patients also required parallel intravenous administration of 5-10 U of oxytocin drip. The average time from the onset of treatment until expulsion of the macerated fetus was 9.09 hours. No complications were recorded. This method is suggested in all such cases, especially when the classical methods are contraindicated.
