[Lipoidproteinosis].

We report the first case of L.P. in our country with typical lesions of skin, pharyngeal and laryngeal mucous membranes. Our observation did not indicate any history of consanguinity nor family incidence, nor visceral engagement. The hepatic biopsy was normal. Connected with the main illness we found a radiopaque area in the right frontal bone which engaged the interior and exterior walls, and a calcification nodule in the base of the right maxillary sinus.

A clinical study of 44 patients with juvenile amaurotic family idiocy.

The material presented comprises 44 patients with juvenile amaurotic family idiocy. The disease is distinguished from other types of gangliosidoses, and earlier clinical descriptions are reviewed. The median age of the patients at the onset of the diseases was 5.8 years and median duration of life was 18.8 years. It appears probable that the disease takes two different courses. Besides the earlier described accompanying phenomena, dystonic attack with oculogyre crises have been found in some patients, as well as extreme cases of bradycardia. In 77% of the patients psychotic manifestations have

Neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis. Studies of granulocyte enzyme activities.

Neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis is characterized by pigmentary degeneration of the retina, psychomotor degeneration, epilepsy and intracellular deposition of ceroidlipofuscin. Recent reports have suggested that deficiency of peroxidase is the basic genetic defect. However, deficiency of myeloperoxidase could be demonstrated in some but not all patients; this deficiency was noted only when p-phenylenediamine (PPD) was used as hydrogen donor and could not be confirmed with guaiacol. We found that horseradish peroxidase (HR-P) oxidized PPD in the absence of added H2O2. The oxidative product of PPD

Increased lipogenesis and lipidosis of gallbladder epithelium in dogs with gallbladder mucocele formation.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder disease in people is frequently associated with disorders of lipid metabolism and metabolic syndrome. A recently emergent gallbladder disease of dogs, referred to as mucocele formation, is characterized by secretion of abnormal mucus by the gallbladder epithelium and is similarly associated with hyperlipidemia, endocrinopathy, and metabolic dysfunction. The cause of gallbladder mucocele formation in dogs is unknown. METHODS: A prospective case-controlled study was conducted to gain insight into disease pathogenesis by characterization of plasma lipid abnormalities in 1

[Collagen fiber pathology in atherosclerotic plaques of the coronary arteries in ischemic heart disease].

Structure-metabolic changes of collagen fibers (CF) in atherosclerosis plaques of the coronary arteries in the conditions of ischemic heart disease (IHD) have been studied. Segments of the coronary arteries were received from 68 men after a coronary artery bypass grafting. CF was study with using of the Van Gieson's and the Masson's methods. Histologic slices were studied by polarization microscopy. The atherosclerosis plaques with IHD were notable for lipidosis of CF. We've suspected lipidosis of CF is a crucial factor for the development of atherosclerosis plaques instability. Evident lipido

A retrospective study of serum β-hydroxybutyric acid in 215 ill cats: clinical signs, laboratory findings and diagnoses.

Serum concentrations of β-hydroxybutyric acid (sBHBA) are increased in cats with diabetes mellitus (DM), diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hepatic lipidosis (HL). This study assessed sBHBA as a diagnostic tool in 215 consecutively-enrolled ill cats in the general population in a veterinary hospital. At the time of presentation, sBHBA was within the reference range in 158/215 (73.5%) cats (median 0.27; range 0.00-0.49 mmol/L) and elevated in 57/215 (26.5%) cats (median 0.87; range 0.51-21.45 mmol/L). Compared to cats with normal sBHBA, those with increased sBHBA had higher frequencies of anorexia

Fatty acid composition and development of hepatic lipidosis during food deprivation--mustelids as a potential animal model for liver steatosis.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome characterized by asymptomatic hepatic steatosis. It is present in most cases of human obesity but also caused e.g., by rapid weight loss. The patients have decreased n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) proportions with decreased percentages of 18:3(n-3), 20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3) and an increased n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio in liver and/or white adipose tissue (WAT). The present study examined a new experimental model to study liver steatosis with possible future applications to NAFLD. Ten European polecats

A strategy for risk management of drug-induced phospholipidosis.

Drug-induced phospholipidosis (PL) is an excessive accumulation of phospholipids and drug in lysosomes. Phospholipidosis signals a change in cell membrane integrity and accumulation of intracellular drug or metabolite in tissues. The sensitivity and susceptibility of preclinical models to detect PL vary with therapeutic agents, and PL is expected to be reversible after discontinuation of drug treatment. The prevailing scientific opinion is that PL by itself is not adverse; however, some regulatory authorities consider PL to be adverse because a small number of chemicals are able to cause PL an
