Magnetic resonance imaging of the jugular foramen.

The jugular foramen in normal volunteers was studied with 1.5 T magnetic resonance (MR) systems in 3-mm-thick head- and surface-coil images. Anatomic sections through cadaver heads were correlated with the MR images to identify the jugular bulb and the course of cranial nerves IX-XI. Sagittal images were more useful than coronal or axial to show the course of these nerves through the skull base. MR demonstrates the anatomic relations of the jugular foramen (except its osseous margins) such that its primary use in evaluating this region can be anticipated.

Aortic dissection: magnetic resonance imaging.

Fifteen patients with suspected or known aortic dissection were imaged with magnetic resonance (MR). Thirteen of these patients were eventually shown to have dissection. In most instances the diagnosis was established by aortography and/or computed tomography (CT) prior to the MR study. Surgical proof (6/13) and/or aortographic proof (10/13) were available in 11/13 patients with aortic dissection. MR demonstrated the intimal flap and determined whether the dissection was type A or type B. In addition, MR: differentiated between the true and false lumens; determined the origins of the celiac, s

Magnetic resonance imaging in obstetric diagnosis.

Five patients with abnormal pregnancies were examined with ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MR). Three had a malformed fetus, 1 had a molar pregnancy, and 1 had an ovarian mass. Both maternal and fetal structures were clearly shown, although fetal motion may have resulted in image degradation in some cases. The authors suggest that MR may be useful in obstetric diagnosis.

[Magnetic resonance: imaging of the heart and mediastinum].

The anatomic structures of the heart and mediastinum can be demonstrated with MRI in three dimensions in their topographic order without contrast medium or heart catheterization. Furthermore, differentiation of the tracheobronchial system and the mediastinal lymph nodes can be discerned with MRI. MRI offers the advantages of reducing invasive diagnostic procedures, eliminating radiation hazards and avoiding the risks of contrast media. Only in the area of the structures adjacent to the diaphragm an improvement of the images by means of additional respiratory-gating is desirable. Concerning tum

Cardiovascular applications of magnetic resonance imaging.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a completely noninvasive modality that has shown significant promise for the evaluation of the cardiovascular system. Our imaging technique employed electrocardiographic (ECG) gating, which resulted in well-resolved images of the cardiac structures. Patients and animals with a variety of cardiovascular abnormalities were also assessed with this technique; the abnormalities included acute and remote myocardial infarctions and their sequelae, atherosclerotic plaques, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, pericardial diseases, and aneurysms. The diagnostic utility of MR

Magnetic resonance imaging of renal transplants.

Nineteen patients were examined to determine the clinical potential of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for evaluation of renal transplants. A 0.6-T cryogenic magnet and spin-echo technique with varying pulsing factors were used. T1-weighted images were best for differentiating the cortical and medullary parts of the transplanted kidney. Of the six living-related transplants with good renal function that were imaged, five demonstrated good corticomedullary differentiation (CMD) and one faint CMD. Three transplants with acute rejection were imaged, and all demonstrated a decrease in CMD and dec

Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging of the kidney.

The role of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging of the kidney was analyzed in 18 persons (6 normal volunteers, 3 patients with pelvocaliectasis, 2 with peripelvic cysts, 1 with renal sinus lipomatosis, 3 with renal failure, 1 with glycogen storage disease, and 2 with polycystic kidney disease). Ultrasound and/or computed tomography (CT) studies were available for comparison in every case. In the normal kidney distinct anatomical structures were clearly differentiated by NMR. The best anatomical detail was obtained with spin echo (SE) imaging, using a pulse sequence interval of 1,000 msec

Possible adaptation to strong magnetic fields.

Animal adaptation to a strong magnetic field was investigated. Mice were exposed to 30-day total-body continuous effects of a constant magnetic field (CMF) of 1.6T, and their physiological responses were assessed. Analysis of the data obtained showed that different parameters varied in a dissimilar manner. Red blood changes returned to normal in the course of the experiment. Leucocytosis and increased content of catecholamines and corticosterone of blood and adrenals persisted throughout the exposure. Changes in the spermatogenic epithelium were most distinct after the exposure. The recovery o

The management of magnetic intraocular foreign bodies.

The management of 34 intracocular foreign bodies is reviewed. When possible the removal of the foreign body was carried out in the quadrant closet to where the foreign body was located and through a site 4-5 mm from the limbus. A circumferential incision was made after tenting had been demonstrated while the magnet was applied to the sclera. Sweet localization and B-scan ultrasound were helfpul in patients with opague media. In particular, ultrasound was used to confirm the magenetic qualities of the foreign body when it could not be visualized ophthalmoscopically. Visual results were surprisi

Magnetic Skyrmion Interacting with Optical Skyrmion.

Magnetic skyrmions (MSks) and optical skyrmions (OSks) embody topology in matter and in light, respectively. Here we investigate the interaction between a single MSk and an OSk beam. Three distinct nonlinear dynamical modes are identified: rotation, skipping, and trochoidal motion. By decomposing the optical driving force into gradient, orbital-angular-momentum, and spin-angular-momentum contributions, we clarify their respective roles of radial confinement, azimuthal drift, and precessional modulation. The skipping motion arises from the azimuthal asymmetry of the OSk beam and exhibits spatia

Magnetoelectric Torque in Polar Magnetic Bilayers.

Energy-efficient fast switching of spin orientations or textures is a core issue of spintronics, which is highly demanded but remains challenging. Different from the mainstream routes based on spin-transfer torque or spin-orbit torque, here we propose another mechanism coined as magnetoelectric torque to switch the magnetization in polar magnetic bilayers via pure electric field. In some magnetic van der Waals bilayers, when the electrostatic energy of polarization can compensate the interlayer magnetic coupling, a magnetoelectric torque is generated to fastly flip spins within a few picosecon

Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Imaging in Oncology is rapidly moving from the detection and size measurement of a lesion to the quantitative assessment of metabolic processes and cellular and molecular interactions. Increasing insights into cancer as a complex disease with involvement of the tumor stroma in tumor pathobiological processes have made it clear that for successful control of cancer, treatment strategies should not only be directed at the cancer cells but should also take aspects of the tumor microenvironment into account. This requires an understanding of the complex molecular and cellular interactions in cance

Safety of endoclips for magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: A fatal incident in which magnetic resonance (MR) may be involved and the appearance of strong MR attraction experienced by some MR-conditional endoclips have cast confusion over the MR safety of MR-conditional endoclips, which may lead to unnecessary delay or denial of MRI to some patients. On the other hand, there are endoclips that are MRI-unsafe, yet not all MRI facilities screen patients for endoclips. PURPOSE: Our purpose is to promote a better understanding of the MRI risks associated with endoclips to facilitate proper management of MRI exams involving patients with endocl

Unlocking magnetic ferro-rotational functionalities.

Ferro-rotation (FR) phenomena-arising from intrinsic crystallographic rotational distortions-have only recently gained significant attention, despite the long-known presence of FR distortions in various compounds. Such phenomena include multiferroicity linked to helical spin order and electric field-induced optical activity. However, the broader relationship between FR and magnetic ordering remains largely unexplored and poorly understood. This study delves into the interplay between magnetic order and FR identifies potential materials capable of hosting magnetic FR and explores the interactio

Magnetic activation of electrically active cells.

Magnetic control of cell activity has applications ranging from non-invasive neurostimulation to remote activation of cell-based therapies. Unlike other methods of regulating cell activity like heat and light, which are based on known receptors or proteins, no magnetically gated channel has been identified to date. As a result, effective approaches for magnetic control of cell activity are based on strong alternating magnetic fields able to induce electric fields or materials that convert magnetic energy into electrical, thermal, or mechanical energy to stimulate cells. In our investigations o

Slow Magnetic Relaxation in a Californium Complex.

We report the synthesis and characterization of the macrocyclic californium derivative Na[Cf(H2O)(DOTA)] (DOTA = 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetate), 1-Cf, which was studied in comparison to its dysprosium counterpart, Na[Dy(H2O)(DOTA)], 1-Dy. Divergent spectroscopic and magnetic behaviors were observed between 1-Cf and 1-Dy. Based upon spectroscopic measurements, we propose that accessible 5f → 6d transitions (potentially operating in tandem with charge-transfer transitions) are the major contributors to the observed broadband photoluminescence in 1-Cf. Magnetic resonance imaging of pulmonary hypertension.

Pulmonary hypertension is a rare but serious disease in children with potentially poor prognosis in the long term. Direct measurement of increased pressure in the pulmonary circulation requires right-heart catheterisation. Echocardiography is the imaging modality commonly used for suggesting the presence of pulmonary hypertension and estimating its severity. Recognition of structural and haemodynamic signs of increased pulmonary arterial pressure and pressure overload of the right ventricle at magnetic resonance (MR) imaging may contribute to the diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension and managem
