Clinical features and outcomes of patients with stage I multiple primary lung cancers.

The number of patients with multiple primary lung cancers (MPLC) is rising. We studied the clinical features and factors related to outcomes of MPLC patients using the database of surgically resected lung cancer (LC) cases compiled by the Japanese Joint Committee of Lung Cancer Registry. From the 18 978 registered cases, 9689 patients with clinical stage I non-small-cell lung cancer who achieved complete resection were extracted. Tumors were defined as synchronous MPLC when multiple LC was simultaneously resected or treatment was carried out within 2 years after the initial surgery; metachrono

Disease course and symptoms in smoking versus non-smoking patients with Celiac disease.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Knowledge about the impact of smoking in Celiac disease is limited. We aimed to assess clinical differences betwe … pared to the Swiss general population in the same time frame (8.5% vs 28.2%, p < 0.01). Compared to non-smokers, smokers had a higher age at diagnosis (39 years vs 32 years, p < 0.01) and more frequently reported diarrhea as an initial symptom (67% vs 56%, p =0.013). Smokers tended to adhere less strictly to a gluten-free diet than non-smokers (69% strict adh …

Exposure to smoking cues during an emotion recognition task can modulate limbic fMRI activation in cigarette smokers.

Smoking cues (SCs) refer to smoking-associated environmental stimuli that may trigger craving and withdrawal symptoms, and predispose to relapse in smokers. Although previous brain imaging studies have explored neural responses to SCs, no study has characterized the effects of SCs on cerebral activity in smokers engaged in an attention-demanding cognitive task that is unrelated to smoking. Thirteen tobacco smokers and a demographically matched group of 13 healthy non-smokers participated in a fast event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study that involved a visual task inte…

Defective bacterial phagocytosis is associated with dysfunctional mitochondria in COPD macrophages.

Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in the pathophysiology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This st … antly decreased in both G-Mφ and M-Mφ from COPD patients compared with from non-smoker controls. In non-smokers and smokers, bacterial phagocytosis did not alter mROS or ΔΨm; however, in COPD, phagocytosis increased early mROS and decreased ΔΨm in both G-Mφ and M-Mφ. Exogenous oxidative stress reduced phagocytosis in non-smoker and COPD alveolar macrophages a …

The investigation of the in vivo cytogenetic effects of psychotropic drugs in human lymphocyte cultures.

The connection of nearly all current antipsychotic drugs to their in vivo cytogenetic activity has not been yet fully investigated. Fluvoxam … s with psychiatric disorders (i.e. depression, bipolar and schizophrenia) consisting of smokers and non-smokers were included. Estimation of SCEs was used as a sensitive biomarker of the potential cytotoxicity, while PRI was used as a valuable marker of cytostatic activity. A significant increase of SCEs in the cultured lymphocyte of the smoker controls (P= 0 …

The impact of smoking on postoperative complications following elective off-pump CABG in an ERAS setting.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the impact of smoking on major postoperative complications following elective off-pump coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery within an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program. METHODS: A total of 3168 patients who underwent elective off-pump and minimally invasive direct CABG under ERAS between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2020, were enrolled. Propensity score matching was applied to minimize potential confounders when comparing postoperative outcomes between smokers and non-smokers. RESULTS: Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed …

Impact of Cigarette Smoking on Re-operation and Revision Surgery after Femoral Neck Fracture Treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Smokers and nicotine users have a higher risk of femoral neck fracture non-union and prolonged time to fracture union. The impact of smoking resulting in revision surgery after fixation of femoral neck fractures, however, rarely has been studied. The aim of this retrospective study was to review if cigarette smoking had an influence on re-operation and revision after femoral neck fracture treatment. METHODS: Three groups of patients (Group 1: active smokers; Group 2: former smokers; and Group 3: non-smokers) who sustained a femoral neck fracture from January 2012 through August …

The relationship between smoking and bladder cancer risk was investigated using data from a case-control study conducted between January 199 … story of schistosomiasis, and 10.7 for smokers ever employed in high-risk occupations compared with non-smokers not reporting such a history. Thus, our results, while not giving indications of an increased bladder cancer risk with habits other than cigarette smoking, found a remarkably strong association with various measures of cigarette smoking that could e …

Cyanide metabolism in motor neuron disease.

Cyanide concentrations in whole blood, saliva and urine were measured in 83 patients with motor neuron disease (MND) and age-, sex-matched control subjects consisting of 62 patients with and 49 without neurological disorders. Cyanide levels in whole blood and urine of MND patients were significantly higher than the non-neurological control groups in smokers and non-smokers. Smoking among pregnant women with Medicaid insurance: are mental health factors related?

Smoking during pregnancy is the single most modifiable risk factor for poor birth outcomes, yet it remains prevalent among low-income women. This study examined factors associated with continued smoking and quitting among pregnant women. A total of 2,203 Medicaid-eligible pregnant women were screened at their first enhanced prenatal services visit for risk factors including demographics, health behaviors (smoking, alcohol and drug use), mental health (history of mental health disorders, current depressive symptoms), and stress. Smoking status was divided into non-smokers, quitters (quit smokin…

Interactions between maternal smoking and other prenatal risk factors for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

In numerous investigations, maternal smoking increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). In the present study we investigated … eterm birth, low birthweight, and number of prenatal visits did not increase the risk of SIDS among non-smokers, but became important risk factors among smokers. In preterm infants (< 37 weeks) of heavy smokers, the RR was 19.6 (10.4, 36.8) compared to term infants of non-smokers. Low birthweight infants (< 2500 g) of heavy smokers had a RR of 16.3 (8.4, 31.2 …

Suppressed prolactin but normal neurophysin levels in cigarette smoking breast-feeding women.

The hormonal responses to breast-feeding were studied during the first 3 post-partum weeks in ten women smoking more than fifteen cigarettes/day and in a control group. Basal PRL levels were significantly lower in smokers compared with non-smokers, but suckling induced acute increments in serum PRL and oxytocin-linked neurophysin, which were not influenced by smoking. The lactational pattern was normal, but smokers weaned their babies significantly earlier compared with non-smokers. Heavy cigarette smoking women have lower basal PRL levels and this may shorten the period of lactation.

Health and voice quality in smokers: an exploratory investigation.

Thirty-two adults (20 smokers and 12 non-smokers) were examined to determine the effects of cigarette smoking on health (diseases and larynx histology), on fundamental frequency (regularity and jitter) and stress level. The examination consisted of nasovideostroboscopy analysis, history case, electrolaryngography assessment for different task performance and self-assessment of stress. Although not statistically different, results indicate that smokers in comparison to non-smokers show: 1) slightly more health problems; 2) histological larynx changes; 3) a higher level of stress; 4) a lower mea…
