Burden of infant group B Streptococcus disease and impact of maternal screening and antibiotic prophylaxis in Ontario, Canada: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) significantly contributes to neonatal sepsis and meningitis, with varying disease rates reported globally and limited population-based data. We estimated infant GBS disease burden in Ontario, Canada and assessed the association of maternal GBS screening (35-37 weeks' gestation) and intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) provision with infant disease rates. METHODS: Our population-based cohort study included pregnant individuals and their offspring from April 2012 to March 2018, utilising the provincial birth registry linked to health administrative da

Long-term incidence of endometrial cancer after endometrial resection and ablation: A population based Swedish gynecologic cancer group (SweGCG) study.

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive methods to reduce menorrhagia were introduced in the 1980s and 1990s. Transcervical endometrial resection (TCRE) and endometrial ablation (EA) are two of the most frequently used methods. As none of them can guarantee a complete removal of the endometrium, there are concerns that the remaining endometrium may develop to endometrial cancer (EC) later in life. The primary aim was to analyze the long-term incidence of EC after TCRE and EA in a nationwide population. The secondary aim was to assess the two treatment modalities separately. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The

Contribution of modifiable risk factors on the burden of diabetes among women in reproductive age-group in India: a population based cross-sectional study.

The diabetes burden is rapidly accelerating in India, particularly since the 2000s. We explore the burden and contribution of modifiable risk factors in diabetes among reproductive women across geographic regions of India. The study uses data from the National Family Health Survey in India 2015-2016, Census of India 2011, and World Population Prospects 2015. We computed Population Attributable Fractions and the number of total and estimated avoidable diabetic cases across regions. The prevalence of diabetic cases in India were 24.4 per 1000 women, varying across geographic regions. Diabetes af

Parasitic infections by Group II Syndiniales target selected dinoflagellate host populations within diverse protist assemblages in a model coastal pond.

Protists are integral to marine food webs and biogeochemical cycles; however, there is a paucity of data describing specific ecological niches for some of the most abundant taxa in marker gene libraries. Syndiniales are one such group, often representing the majority of sequence reads recovered from picoplankton samples across the global ocean. However, the prevalence and impacts of syndinian parasitism in marine environments remain unclear. We began to address these critical knowledge gaps by generating a high-resolution time series (March-October 2018) in a productive coastal pond. Seasonal

Population Genomics Reveals Distinct Temporal Association with the Emergence of ST1 Serotype V Group B Streptococcus and Macrolide Resistance in North America.

Identified in the 1970s as the leading cause of invasive bacterial disease in neonates and young infants, group B Streptococcus (GBS) is now also recognized as a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among adults with underlying medical conditions and the elderly. Concomitant with the increasing incidence of GBS invasive disease in adults is the rise of resistance among GBS isolates to second line antibiotics. Previous research shows that among serotype V GBS, one of the most common capsular types causing adult invasive disease, sequence type 1 (ST1), accounts for an overwhelming majori

Offspring Birth Weight Is Associated with Specific Preconception Maternal Food Group Intake: Data from a Linked Population-Based Birth Cohort.

The preconception period has been recognized as one of the earliest sensitive windows for human development. Maternal dietary intake during this period may influence the oocyte quality, as well as placenta and early embryonic development during the first trimester of pregnancy. Previous studies have found associations between macronutrient intake during preconception and pregnancy outcomes. However, as food products consist of multiple macro- and micronutrients, it is difficult to relate this to dietary intake behavior. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association betwee

Group based prenatal care in a low-and high risk population in the Netherlands: a study protocol for a stepped wedge cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: CenteringPregnancy (CP) is a multifaceted group based care-model integrated in routine prenatal care, combining health assessment, education, and support. CP has shown some positive results on perinatal outcomes. However, the effects are less obvious when limited to the results of randomized controlled trials: as there are few trials and there is a variation in reported outcomes. Furthermore, former research was mostly conducted in the United States of America and in specific (often high risk) populations. Our study aims to evaluate the effects of CP in the Netherlands in a general

Cryptococcosis: population-based multistate active surveillance and risk factors in human immunodeficiency virus-infected persons. Cryptococcal Active Surveillance Group.

To determine the incidence of cryptococcosis and its risk factors among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected persons, population-based active surveillance was conducted in four US areas (population, 12.5 million) during 1992-1994, and a case-control study was done. Of 1083 cases, 931 (86%) occurred in HIV-infected persons. The annual incidence of cryptococcosis per 1000 among persons living with AIDS ranged from 17 (San Francisco, 1994) to 66 (Atlanta, 1992) and decreased significantly in these cities during 1992-1994. Among non-HIV-infected persons, the annual incidence of cryptococcos

Down syndrome screening in an Asian population using alpha-fetoprotein and free beta-hCG: a report of the Taiwan Down Syndrome Screening Group.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the strategy of maternal serum screening for Down syndrome, using alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and free beta-hCG in combination with maternal age, a technique developed in western countries, is applicable to an Asian population. METHODS: Alpha-fetoprotein and beta-hCG were measured in serum samples from 23 Down syndrome pregnancies and 1748 unaffected singleton Taiwanese (ethnically Chinese) pregnancies at 14-22 weeks' gestation. Gestational age-specific medians and a maternal weight correction formula were established for our own population. Likelihood ratio for Dow

A fractal model of HIV transmission on complex socio-geographic networks. Part 2: spread from a ghettoized 'core group' into a 'general population'.

"Study of the initial stages of HIV transmission along a 'sociogeographic network'--a large, complex, spatially focused social network with possibly fractal geometry--is extended to include interaction between a low-dimensional ghettoized 'core group' within which the disease spreads very rapidly and a higher dimensional, more loosely structured 'general population' in which spread is relatively slow. A mathematical modeling exercise suggests that contextually modulated interaction between them can be highly nonlinear and may greatly increase the initial rate of disease transmission within the

A cross-sectional survey of experts' opinions about the relative effectiveness of tobacco control strategies for the general population versus disadvantaged groups: what do we choose in the absence of evidence?

BACKGROUND: There is a clear disparity in smoking rates according to social disadvantage. In the absence of sufficiently robust data regarding effective strategies for reducing smoking prevalence in disadvantaged populations, understanding the views of tobacco control experts can assist with funding decisions and research agendas. METHODS: A web-based cross-sectional survey was conducted with 192 respondents (response rate 65%) sampled from the Australian and New Zealand Tobacco Control Contacts list and a literature search. Respondents were asked to indicate whether a number of tobacco contr

Addressing the between-group comparison problem: Detecting differences between correlation matrix populations due to single-variable perturbations for resting state fMRI.

Resting-state fMRI (RS-fMRI) has been known for decades as a promising method for evaluating cognitive and mental states, both in health and especially in disease, due to its ease of implementation as a short, standard MRI protocol. In clinical settings, a group of patients with a given disorder is typically compared to a group of healthy controls. This poses an inherent challenge of between-group comparison. We propose a new efficient model for characterizing changes to the temporal synchronization of brain activity measured using RS-fMRI between groups, summarized as individual correlation m

Incidence rate of alopecia areata in Israel: A 15-year analysis of population-based data and the emergence of young male adults as the most at-risk group.

Incidence rate and temporal trends in alopecia areata (AA) vary worldwide. As a common disorder with a major impact on life quality, there is a continuous need for comprehensive epidemiological characterization and global updates of the disease burden. We sought to perform an epidemiologic characterization of AA patients and to explore temporal trends across different subgroups using long-term health data. A retrospective population-based study was conducted in a large healthcare organization in Israel. Data were analyzed for all patients with AA between 2005 and 2019. A total of 30 805 patien

Serum high mobility group box-1 levels associated with cardiovascular events after lower extremity revascularization: a prospective study of a diabetic population.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is one of the most disabling cardiovascular complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus and is indeed associated with a high risk of cardiovascular and limb adverse events. High mobility group box-1 (HMGB-1) is a nuclear protein involved in the inflammatory response that acts as a pro-inflammatory cytokine when released into the extracellular space. HMBG-1 is associated with PAD in diabetic patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between serum HMGB-1 levels and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and major adverse limb

European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) Criteria With Population-Based Skeletal Muscle Index Best Predicts Mortality in Asians With Cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Multiple definitions of sarcopenia exist and the acceptable criterion that best predicts outcome is lacking. We estimated the prevalence of sarcopenia based on four criteria and assessed their utility in predicting mortality in cirrhotics. METHODS: In a prospective observational study, consecutive Asian patients with cirrhosis underwent testing for handgrip strength (HGS) and estimation of skeletal muscle index (SMI) using computed tomography at the third lumbar vertebra. Sarcopenia was defined based on the Western cut-off (WC; SMI < 50 cm2/m2 for men and <39 cm2/m2 for women
