Crohn's disease: factors associated with exposure to high levels of diagnostic radiation.

AIMS: Exposure to diagnostic radiation may be associated with increased risk of malignancy. The aims of this study were to (1) examine patterns of use of imaging in Crohn's disease; (2) quantify the cumulative effective dose (CED) of diagnostic radiation received by patients; and (3) identify patients at greatest risk of exposure to high levels of diagnostic radiation. METHODS: 409 patients with Crohn's disease were identified at a tertiary centre. CED was calculated retrospectively from imaging performed between July 1992 and June 2007. High exposure was defined as CED>75 mSv, an exposure le

Distal locking of tibial nails : a new device to reduce radiation exposure.

UNLABELLED: The indications for intramedullary nailing have expanded to include most tibial shaft fractures. Nail design has improved since their first introduction, but distal locking remains a difficult part of the procedure, resulting in radiation exposure to the patient and the surgeon and increased operation time. To address these issues, we describe an alternative surgical technique using a newly designed distal targeting device that consists of a proximally mounted aiming arm, and we report the preliminary data from its use in all tibial shaft fractures amenable to surgery for a 2-year …

Chronic suppression of angiogenesis following radiation exposure is independent of hematopoietic reconstitution.

Radiation can potentially suppress neovascularization by inhibiting the incorporation of hematopoietic precursors as well as damaging mature endothelial cells. The purpose of these studies was to quantify the effect of radiation on angiogenesis and to examine the relationship between bone marrow reconstitution and neovascularization. Immune competent, severe combined immunodeficient, RAG1-deficient, and green fluorescence protein transgenic mice in the C57 genetic background, as well as the highly angiogenic 129S1/SvlmJ strain of mice, underwent whole-body or localized exposure to radiation. [Effects of ligfol after radiation-mercury exposure in rats of various age].

The study was carried out with the young (4-5 months) and elderly (15-18 months) female and male rats at the experiment start. The mercury salt was administered into animals with drinking water in 1 mcg/l concentration during 3 months before and 1 month after single X-irradiation with 25 cGy dose. The genotoxic effects in leukocytes were evaluated on the base of the content and structure DNA alterations in 24 hrs and in 1 mth after irradiation. The alaninaminotransferase activity in serum was determined to evaluate functional status of liver. A protector intramuscular injection of Ligfol prepa

Lack of association between acute exposure to ionizing radiation and liver cirrhosis.

PURPOSE: Although previous studies have shown significantly increased risks of liver cirrhosis and chronic liver disease for acute radiation exposure among survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, these studies have not taken into account hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections. Because HBV is associated with both A-bomb radiation and liver cirrhosis, our goal was to investigate the relationship of acute ionizing radiation to liver cirrhosis adjusting for HBV, co-occurring primary liver cancer (PLC), and other potential confounders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a cross-se…

Cytogenetic methods for biodosimetry and risk individualisation after exposure to ionising radiation.

Measurement of dicentric chromosomes in human lymphocytes has been applied to assess dose received by potentially overexposed people and estimate risk for health effects. Since the dicentrics in exposed people decrease with time, the introduction of fluorescent in situ hybridisation enables to measure stable translocations for biodosimetry and address old or long-term exposures. In addition, premature chromosome condensation, which enables analysis in interphase, offers several advantages for biodosimetry. However, dose and risk estimates derived using cytogenetics and adequate calibration cur

[Morphological and cytogenetic disorders in rats following chronic exposure to elevated radiation].

Object of the investigation were effects of elevated radiation background on specific body systems in two generations of rats that had been chronically exposed to radiation in the most badly polluted areas of the Kaluga district and eaten local food. Findings included some compensatory deviations in the white blood count, decrease in karyocytes and increase in chromosomal aberration rate in nucleus-containing cells from the femoral bone marrow in younger animals of several groups, morphologic and histochemical shifts in mucous membrane of the esophagus and the stomach, and morphofunctional cha

Radiation exposure to the physician performing fluoroscopically guided caudal epidural steroid injections.

This study was designed to investigate radiation exposure to a physician performing fluoroscopically guided caudal epidural steroid injections. The prospective study design included 100 consecutive fluoroscopically guided caudal epidural steroid injections performed on patients with radiculitis from either herniated nucleus pulposus or lumbar spinal stenosis. Radiation exposure was monitored with the assistance of a radiological technologist (RT) who allocated four dosimetry badges to all physicians performing fluoroscopically guided caudal epidural steroid injections on consecutive patients b…

Carotenoid supplementation reduces erythema in human skin after simulated solar radiation exposure.

Excessive exposure to solar radiation, especially ultraviolet A (UVA: 320-400 nm) and ultraviolet B (UVB: 290-320 nm) radiation, may induce UV-carcinogenesis and erythema in the skin. Although the protective effects of carotenoids against skin lesions are still unclear, beta-carotene has been proposed as an oral sun protectant. The purpose of this study was to determine the magnitude of the protective effects of oral alpha- and beta-carotene supplementation for 24 weeks on UVA- and UVB-induced erythema in humans. While being exposed to UVA and UVB radiation, 22 subjects (11 men and 11 women) w

Health concerns related to radiation exposure of the female nuclear medicine patient.

The female nuclear medicine patient is of special concern in evaluating radiation dose and risk in nuclear medicine. The female's overall body size and organ sizes generally are smaller than those of her male counterpart (thus her radiation doses will be higher, given the same amounts of administered activity and similar biokinetics); female gonads are inside the body instead of outside and are near several organs often important as source organs in internal dosimetry (urinary bladder, liver, kidneys, intestines); risk of breast cancer is significantly higher among females than males; and in t

[Photoreactivation of Ca2+-ATPase and Mg2+-ATPase after exposure to ionizing radiation].

Plasma membranes of thymocytes in doses 10(2), 10(3) and 10(4) Gr were irradiated and subsequently illuminated by lambda = 445,5 nm or lambda = 518 nm light. Then the activity of Ca(2+)-ATPase and Mg(2+)-ATPase was determined. The photomodulation of the electron shell of calcium and magnesium atoms is a factor decreasing the effect of radiation on Ca(2+)-ATPase or Mg(2+)-ATPase.

[Exposure of the Swiss population to radiation from diagnostic x-ray studies].

A new study is presently being conducted on the exposure of the Swiss population to radiation by diagnostic measures. This study is performed by the Department of Medical Radiation Physics of the University of Berne in collaboration with the Federal Health Bureau and the Swiss Institute for Health and Hospital Matters. In earlier studies the genetically significant exposure of the population and subsequently the median exposure of the red bone marrow had been investigated, whereas now the risk exposure to radiation of as far as possible practically all the risk-relevant organs will be studied.

[Changes in lymphocyte size after chronic exposure to radiation and chemical factors].

Results of the analysis of changes in peripheral blood lymphocytes size under chronic exposure to external gamma radiation and pesticide chlorophos++ in combination and separately are presented. It has been found out that under exposure of animals to radiation or the pesticide it is small and big lymphocytes respectively which most significantly suffer quantitatively. Under the joint radiation ++-chemical exposure of the organism the number of both types of cells is reduced simultaneously.

Physician exposure to ionizing radiation during trauma resuscitation: a prospective clinical study.

A prospective study of emergency physician whole body and extremity exposure to ionizing radiation during trauma resuscitation over a three-month period was conducted. Radiation film badges and thermoluminescent dosimeter finger rings were permanently attached to leaded aprons worn by emergency medicine residents during all trauma resuscitations. One set of apron and finger ring dosimeters was designated for the resident who managed the airway and stabilized the neck, when necessary, during cervical spine radiography (A-CS resident). A separate set of dosimeters was designated for the resident

Increased tumor necrosis factor alpha mRNA after cellular exposure to ionizing radiation.

We report that tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) mRNA is increased after treatment with x-rays in certain human sarcoma cells. An increase in TNF-alpha mRNA is accompanied by the increased production of TNF-alpha protein. TNF-alpha enhances radiation lethality in both TNF-alpha-producing and -nonproducing tumor cells. These data suggest that, in addition to the direct cytotoxic effects of x-rays, production of TNF-alpha may add to radiation lethality through autocrine and paracrine mechanisms. Combinations of TNF-alpha and therapeutic radiation may be useful in clinical cancer therapy.
