The importance of early detection of keratoconus lies in early treatment to prevent complications resulting from disease progression and in planning optimal follow-up or screening schedules for family members, considering the genetic component of the disease. In the past, with the absence of accessible, adequate imaging technology such as corneal topography to detect subtle manifestations of the disease, keratoconus was considered rare. This resulted in later detection when the disease had progressed to a more advanced, severe state, with many patients requiring corneal transplants. Currently,

BACKGROUND: Phakic intraocular lens (PIOL) implantation is a surgical option for correction of refractive errors. PIOLs can be use to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. It is a surgical option available to patients in addition to methods such as laser cornea refractive surgery, e.g., laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and photo-refractive keratectomy (PRK). Visian implantable collamer lens (ICL) are posterior chamber lenses which are surgically positioned in a phakic eye in the sulcus between the iris diaphragm and the natural crystalline lens.

Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a safe and efficient refractive surgical procedure that provides excellent results in most cases. Several complications have been reported, most of them related to the posterior segment of the eye. Although they are quite rare, a growing number of vitreoretinal pathologic conditions after LASIK have been reported. To date no article has reported an inflammatory or infectious disease of the posterior segment after a LASIK procedure. We report a case of reactivation of toxoplasmic chorioretinitis that occurred 5 days after a LASIK procedure. Clinical outco

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Corneal astigmatism is a common refractive error observed in a significant percentage of cataract patients. Accurate measurements of the preexisting corneal astigmatism are essential in order to achieve the desired refractive outcome after toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. This article presents a comprehensive review of recent published literatures on methods for measuring preoperative corneal astigmatism for toric IOL implantation.
RECENT FINDINGS: A variety of instruments has been introduced and used to measure the magnitude and meridian of corneal astigmatism du

BACKGROUND: To determine the surface characteristics of human corneal lenticules after femtosecond laser surgery for myopia.
METHODS: The Carl Zeiss Meditec AG VisuMax® femtosecond laser system was used for refractive correction called Femtosecond Lenticule Extraction on 24 myopic eyes. The surface regularity on the refractive corneal lenticules recovered was evaluated by assessing scanning electron microscopy images using an established scoring system. Three different energy levels 150, 180, and 195 nJ were compared (n = 8 in each group).
RESULTS: Surface irregularities were caused by tissu

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: After photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), the final refraction in the majority of patients is near the intended refraction. However, a significant proportion of patients show regression, which is commonly associated with corneal haze. This study aims to determine whether biologic and environmental factors influence the outcome of PRK.
METHODS: One hundred patients prospectively underwent -3.00- or -6.00-diopter corrections. Three months after surgery, 100% of patients answered a questionnaire that recorded their biologic characteristics, medical and ocular history, and post

Penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) has long been the standard procedure for treating irreversible opacification of the cornea from various diseases. The success rate of PKP is high compared with those in other organ transplants because of the low incidence of immunologic rejection. However, once rejection does occur, secondary procedures are inevitably less successful. Cases with vascularized corneas are also prone to undergo rejection, and severe disease causing total destruction of limbal tissue is considered a contraindication for surgery. Recent advances in corneal surgery aim at reducing surg

Osteochondral Lesions of the Talar Dome (OLT) are common problems encountered in orthopedics. Although the etiology remains uncertain, a myriad of treatment options exists. The authors describe arthroscopically assisted autologous osteochondral graft (OCG) transplantation procedures in the treatment of unstable OLTs in nine patients. The patients underwent standard preoperative MRI examination to assess fragment stability (using De Smet criteria for stability). Intraoperative arthroscopy was used to correlate the preoperative MRI assessment (using Cheng/Ferkel grading). After transplantation p
