Heterotopic neuroglial mass in the parapharyngeal space causing dysphagia in a 4 years old child: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroglial heterotopia represents a rare differential diagnosis for pediatric neck masses. Its occurrence in the parapharyngeal space is exceptionally uncommon, with fewer than 30 documented cases in the literature. CASE REPORT: This report details the case of a 4-year-old girl initially noted to have a mass in the right parotid area at birth with no symptoms. After observation, she returned at the age of 4 with dysphagia and a visible mass in the same area. Subsequent CT imaging revealed a mass in the right parapharyngeal space, prompting surgical intervention. Histological exa

Carotid space Burkitt lymphoma presenting with headache: A case report.

Burkitt's lymphoma presents with diverse clinical manifestations, including rare extranodal occurrences. This report documents a unique case of primary Burkitt's lymphoma located in the carotid space, an infrequent presentation with significant diagnostic implications. A 25-year-old male presented with the sudden onset severe headache and nausea. Imaging revealed an infiltrative lesion encompassing the right carotid sheath, extending into the superior retropharynx and nasopharynx. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) mapping demonstrated significant restric

Metamaterial Based Ku-Band Antenna for Low Earth Orbit Nanosatellite Payload System.

The concept of nanosatellite technology becomes a viable platform for earth and space observation research to minimize cost and build time for the payload. The communication approach is the essential fundamental attribute of a satellite, of which the antenna is a crucial component for forming a communication link between the nanosatellite and the earth. The nanosatellite antenna must comply with some special requirements like compact size, lightweight, and high gain with a space-compatible structure. This paper proposes a compact metamaterial-based Ku-band antenna with circular polarization fo

Characterization of laser cooling in microgravity via long-term operations in TianGong-2 space lab.

The invention of laser cooling has fundamentally influenced the research frontier of atomic physics and quantum physics, and recently an intense focus has been on the studies of cold atom physics in microgravity environments. Herein, we report the results of our laser cooling experiment in TianGong-2 space lab, which operated for 34 consecutive months in orbit. Over such an extended operation time, the quality of laser cooling did not experience any significant decline, while the properties of laser cooling in orbital microgravity were systematically studied. In particular, we demonstrate magn

Accelerating progress in early triple-negative breast cancer: A viewpoint on antibody-drug conjugates, back from St Gallen breast cancer conference 2021.

Metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC) is associated with an aggressive disease course, and limited treatment options. The recent accelerated drug development in the space of mTNBC has been driven by a precision-medicine approach, with the potential to deliver more personalized treatments and result in better outcomes. Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) have introduced a novel paradigm in the space of mTNBC, leading to the approval of the first targeted agent in this setting. The research and development of ADCs comes in parallel with the identification of tumor-specific targets of phar

Numerical magnitude, rather than individual bias, explains spatial numerical association in newborn chicks.

We associate small numbers with the left and large numbers with the right side of space. Recent evidence from human newborns and non-human animals has challenged the primary role assigned to culture, in determining this spatial numerical association (SNA). Nevertheless, the effect of individual spatial biases has not been considered in previous research. Here, we tested the effect of numerical magnitude in SNA and we controlled for itablendividual biases. We trained 3-day-old chicks (Gallus gallus) on a given numerical magnitude (5). Then chicks could choose between two identical, left or righ

Immediate, non-submerged, root-analogue zirconia implant in single tooth replacement.

This report demonstrates the successful clinical use of a modified root-analogue zirconia implant for immediate single tooth replacement. A right maxillary premolar was removed and a custom-made, root-analogue, roughened zirconia implant with macro-retentions in the interdental space was fabricated and placed into the extraction socket 4 days later. Four months after root implantation a composite crown was cemented. No complications occurred during the healing period. An excellent esthetic and functional result was achieved with the composite crown. No clinically noticeable bone resorption or

Na+-glucose cotransporter is also expressed in mesothelium of species with thick visceral pleura.

Molecular evidence for Na+-glucose cotransporter (SGLT1) in rabbit pleural mesothelium has been recently provided, confirming earlier functional findings on solute-coupled liquid absorption from rabbit pleural space. In this research we checked whether SGLT1 is also expressed in pleural mesothelium of species with thick visceral pleura, which receives blood from systemic circulation, but drains it into pulmonary veins. To this end immunoblot assays were performed on total protein extract of scraped visceral and parietal mesothelium of lambs and adult sheep, and of a human mesothelial cell line

Charting biologically relevant chemical space: a structural classification of natural products (SCONP).

The identification of small molecules that fall within the biologically relevant subfraction of vast chemical space is of utmost importance to chemical biology and medicinal chemistry research. The prerequirement of biological relevance to be met by such molecules is fulfilled by natural product-derived compound collections. We report a structural classification of natural products (SCONP) as organizing principle for charting the known chemical space explored by nature. SCONP arranges the scaffolds of the natural products in a tree-like fashion and provides a viable analysis- and hypothesis-ge

The contextual self: object ownership modulates neural encoding across peripersonal and extrapersonal spaces.

A crucial aspect of interacting with objects in our environment lies in determining whether they are located within peripersonal space (PPS) - where immediate action is possible- or extrapersonal space (EPS), where objects are out of reach. Importantly, social context often prompts additional consideration of object ownership, which may interfere with spatial localization. Although previous research has demonstrated that both spatial and social contexts influence object processing, the neural networks subtending their interaction remains largely unexplored. To address this issue, the present f

Transcriptional changes at different developmental stages of rice (Oryza sativa L.) following lunar orbit flight.

Plants are regarded as a core component of the life support system for crewed space missions, particularly in deep-space endeavors such as lunar and Martian missions. Therefore, understanding the responses of plants to deep-space flight is considered essential. Japonica rice dry seeds (Oryza sativa L.) were carried aboard the Chang'e 5 spacecraft on a flight to the lunar orbit for 23 days. Following their return to Earth, these seeds were planted and cultivated until the tillering and heading stages. Through comparative transcriptomic analysis with the ground control, it was found that rice pl

The value of a spaceflight clinical decision support system for earth-independent medical operations.

As NASA prepares for crewed lunar missions over the next several years, plans are also underway to journey farther into deep space. Deep space exploration will require a paradigm shift in astronaut medical support toward progressively earth-independent medical operations (EIMO). The Exploration Medical Capability (ExMC) element of NASA's Human Research Program (HRP) is investigating the feasibility and value of advanced capabilities to promote and enhance EIMO. Currently, astronauts rely on real-time communication with ground-based medical providers. However, as the distance from Earth increas

Incorporating space and time into random forest models for analyzing geospatial patterns of drug-related crime incidents in a major U.S. metropolitan area.

The opioid crisis has hit American cities hard, and research on spatial and temporal patterns of drug-related activities including detecting and predicting clusters of crime incidents involving particular types of drugs is useful for distinguishing hot zones where drugs are present that in turn can further provide a basis for assessing and providing related treatment services. In this study, we investigated spatiotemporal patterns of more than 52,000 reported incidents of drug-related crime at block group granularity in Chicago, IL between 2016 and 2019. We applied a space-time analysis framew

Developing protocols for recombinant adeno-associated virus-mediated gene therapy in space.

With the advent of the era of International Space Station (ISS) and Mars exploration, it is important more than ever to develop means to cure genetic and acquired diseases, which include cancer and AIDS, for these diseases hamper human activities. Thus, our ultimate goal is to develop protocols for gene therapy, which are suitable to humans on the earth as well as in space. Specifically, we are trying to cure the hemoglobinopathies, beta-thalassemia (Cooley's anemia) and sickle cell anemia, by gene therapy. These well-characterized molecular diseases serve as models for developing ex vivo gene

A framework for investigating geographical variation in diseases, based on a study of Legionnaires' disease.

Demonstration of geographical variations in disease can yield powerful insight into the disease pathway, particularly for environmentally acquired conditions, but only if the many problems of data interpretation can be solved. This paper presents the framework, methods and principles guiding a study of the geographical epidemiology of Legionnaires' Disease in Scotland. A case-list was constructed and disease incidence rates were calculated by geographical area; these showed variation. Five categories of explanation for the variation were identified: short-term fluctuations of incidence in time

Involving Knowledge Users in Health Services Research: Collective Reflections and Learning From a National Evaluation of Recurrent Miscarriage Services.

INTRODUCTION: Involving knowledge users in research can facilitate the translation of evidence into policy and practice. How to best involve and support various types of knowledge users, including patient and public involvement contributors, in research is an identified knowledge gap. We conducted a national evaluation of recurrent miscarriage care supported by a Research Advisory Group (convened in March 2020) comprising a range of knowledge users, including parent advocates and people involved in the management/provision of services. The Group met virtually nine times, and actively collabora
