We modified the Onen method for pectus carinatum repair and used a vertical incision instead of a transverse incision. The most important advantage gained by the vertical incision is that we can switch to the Ravitch method without needing an additional incision, by elongating the existing incision in patients in whom a pectus bar cannot be placed. We successfully performed the modified Onen technique in a 16-year-old boy with a mixed-type pectus carinatum deformity.

The following surgical technique describes a case of a 51-year-old man with severe juvenile rheumatoid arthritis that required a 2-stage revision of an infected revision total knee implant. The patient had previously been implanted with a revision rotating platform, constrained condylar device which gained excellent fixation through the use of diaphyseal-engaging stems, and a well-ingrown, fully porous-coated femoral metaphyseal sleeve. To avoid intraoperative complications while removing the femoral sleeve, a novel technique for femoral sleeve extraction was used. Using this technique, the fe

The operative treatment of thoracolumbar fractures is a rapidly evolving improvement in the care of patients with this injury after trauma. This article describes the different techniques and principles. Considerations and methods of treatment are scientifically addressed and illustrated according to the classification and severity of the fracture pattern. The use of computer navigation and optimisation of minimally invasive techniques is inevitable. The timing of surgery as well the removal of the material after fracture healing are also discussed. The operative treatment of spinal fractures

BACKGROUND: Spondylodiscitis still remains a serious problem, especially in immunocompromised patients. Surgery is necessary when nonsurgical treatment is unsuccessful. Although minimally invasive spine stabilization (MISt) with percutaneous pedicle screws is less invasive, percutaneous sacropelvic fixation techniques are not common practice. Here, we describe 2 cases in which spondylodiscitis in the lumbosacral spine was treated with percutaneous stabilization using an S2 alar-iliac (S2AI) screw technique.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Case 1 is a 77-year-old man who presented with low back pain and hig

PURPOSE: To compare 2 methods of fusion in the treatment of lumbar spondylolisthesis: posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) and intertransverse fusion (ITF).
METHODS: 20 patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis were randomly allocated to one of 2 groups: decompression, posterior instrumentation, and PLIF (n=10) or decompression, posterior instrumentation, and ITF (n=10). The Oswestry low back pain disability questionnaire was used for clinical assessment. Radiography was performed preoperatively and postoperatively to assess the reduction of spondylolisthesis or slip.
RESULTS: In the PLIF a

Thirty-three consecutive patients with complete ruptures of the calcaneal tendon were treated by external fixation. The patients were assessed both objectively and subjectively, and the results classified as excellent, good, fair and poor. In 30 patients the result was excellent or good. There were no infections or re-ruptures. Two patients with fair results had sural nerve injury. The only patient with a poor result had Sudeck's atrophy. It is felt that this operation satisfies the need for a new technique which is simple and combines the advantages of both surgical and non-surgical treatment

BACKGROUND: We aimed to develop a three-dimensional (3D) printed glaucoma drainage device (GDD) surgery model and evaluate its realism and procedural performance compared with a commercially available GDD.
METHODS: This prospective, simulation-based pilot feasibility study assessed preliminary face and content validity evidence for a 3D-printed GDD model. Fourteen glaucoma specialists (eight fellows and six consultants) were recruited using a convenience sample from a single tertiary eye hospital. Participants performed two simulated GDD surgeries on ovine eyes in a surgical training wet lab,

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endoscopic mucosal defect closure is essential to prevent adverse events after advanced endoscopic resection. The reopenable clip over-the-line method (ROLM) is effective for large defects but remains technically demanding, particularly during suture fixation and cutting. We present a simplified modification using an endoscopic cinch device.
METHODS: The cinch-modified ROLM (C-ROLM) incorporates an endoscopic cinch device to simultaneously fix and cut the suture line in a single step. After sequential approximation of mucosal defect edges using a reopenable hemostatic cli

»: Pectoralis major (PM) tendon tears are predominantly seen in young men, and the majority of tears occur as tendon avulsions involving the sternal head. Weightlifting, specifically bench-pressing, and sporting activities with eccentric overloading of the PM tendon are the 2 most common activities that result in PM injury.
»: Early surgical repair or reconstruction should be offered to younger, active patients with a complete PM tear; the majority of the patients undergoing surgical repair achieve good-to-excellent outcomes.

To investigate the role of a fully digital process in the surgical treatment of mandibular fractures in children. We analyzed a complete dataset from 22 children with mandibular fractures treated with digital surgical assistance. The patient's treatment process included preoperative thin layer CT (Computed Tomography) scanning, computer-aided design (3D reconstruction, virtual reduction, and internal fixation device determination and shaping), and 3D printing (jaw model, bite plate). We used occlusal and shaping plates during surgery to assist in fracture reduction and fixation. During the fol

BACKGROUND: Positioning and fixation of the cochlear implant (CI) are commonly performed free hand. Applications of 3-dimensional (3D) technology now allow us to make patient specific, bone supported surgical guides, to aid CI surgeons with precise placement and drilling out the bony well which accommodates the receiver/stimulator device of the CI.
METHODS: Cone beam CT (CBCT) scans were acquired from temporal bones in 9 cadaveric heads (18 ear

Vaginal atresia is seen in genetic disorders such as Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, which can cause significant sexual dysfunction. Current treatments include surgical reconstruction or mechanical dilation of the vaginal canal. Mechanical dilation requires patients to be highly motivated and compliant while surgical reconstruction has high rates of complications. This study evaluated a novel vaginal expansion sleeve (VES) method as an alternative treatment for vaginal atresia. The proprietary cylindrical VES is a spring-like device consisting of polyethylene terephthalate heli

High tibial osteotomy (HTO) is a surgical procedure to treat symptomatic unicompartmental osteoarthritis (OA) associated with knee malalignment. There has been a recent resurgence of interest in HTO in patients who prefer joint-preserving surgery because HTO shifts the knee's mechanical axis from the arthritic compartment to a neutral position, thereby reducing knee pain, slowing progression of OA, and delaying the need for a total knee arthroplasty. The ideal candidates for HTO are patients who are young, active, and nonobese who have isolated varus deformity of the knee resulting from medial
