Educational and Clinical Associations With Longitudinal Cognitive Function and Brain Imaging in American Indians: The Strong Heart Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Little is known about incidence of vascular and Alzheimer dementias in American Indians. METHODS: We conducted a large, heterogeneous, population-based, longitudinal cohort study of brain aging in community-dwelling American Indians aged 64-95 years from 11 tribes across 3 states, with neurologic examinations, 1.5T MRI, and extensive cognitive testing. Visit 1 in 2010-2013 (n = 817) and visit 2 in 2017-2019 (n = 403) included all willing, surviving participants. Standardized cognitive tests at both visits included Modified Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE), Wech

A preliminary account of phonological and morphophonological perception in young children with and without otitis media.

This investigation examined the effects of otitis media with effusion (OME) and its associated fluctuating conductive hearing loss on the perception of phonological and morphophonological /s/ and /z/ in young children. We predicted that children free of OME (OME-) would perform better than children with histories of OME (OME+). We also predicted that for the OME+ group morphological perception would be harder than phonological perception, because the former category carries an additional linguistic load (i.e., plurality). Sixteen children, ages 26 to 28 months (M = 26.5, SD = 0.6) were divided

Toward Semantics in the Wild: Activation to Manipulable Nouns in Naturalistic Reading.

UNLABELLED: The neural basis of language processing, in the context of naturalistic reading of connected text, is a crucial but largely unexplored area. Here we combined functional MRI and eye tracking to examine the reading of text presented as whole paragraphs in two experiments with human subjects. We registered high-temporal resolution eye-tracking data to a low-temporal resolution BOLD signal to extract responses to single words during naturalistic reading where two to four words are typically processed per second. As a test case of a lexical variable, we examined the response to noun man

Fear of negative evaluation biases social evaluation inference: evidence from a probabilistic learning task.

BACKGROUND: Fear of negative evaluation (FNE) defines social anxiety yet the process of inferring social evaluation, and its potential role in maintaining social anxiety, is poorly understood. We developed an instrumental learning task to model social evaluation learning, predicting that FNE would specifically bias learning about the self but not others. METHODS: During six test blocks (3 self-referential, 3 other-referential), participants (n = 100) met six personas and selected a word from a positive/negative pair to finish their social evaluation sentences "I think [you are / George is]…".

A taste for words and sounds: a case of lexical-gustatory and sound-gustatory synesthesia.

Gustatory forms of synesthesia involve the automatic and consistent experience of tastes that are triggered by non-taste related inducers. We present a case of lexical-gustatory and sound-gustatory synesthesia within one individual, SC. Most words and a subset of non-linguistic sounds induce the experience of taste, smell and physical sensations for SC. SC's lexical-gustatory associations were significantly more consistent than those of a group of controls. We tested for effects of presentation modality (visual vs. auditory), taste-related congruency, and synesthetic inducer-concurrent directi

Does the age of achieving pubertal landmarks predict cognition in older men? Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Earlier pubertal maturation in women may be associated with better cognition. It is unclear whether or not this also occurs in men. We tested the hypothesis that earlier pubertal development in men was associated with better cognition in later adulthood in a developing Chinese population. METHODS: Multivariable linear regression was used in cross-sectional study of 2463 older, Chinese men from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study. Mean pubertal age was calculated as the mean of recalled ages of first nocturnal emission, voice breaking and pubarche. We assessed the association of mean p

The cortical neuroanatomy of neuropsychological deficits in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease: a surface-based morphometric analysis.

Patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the amnesic form of mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) often demonstrate several types of neuropsychological deficits. These deficits are often related to cortical atrophy, induced by neuronal degradation. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether different anatomic patterns of cortical atrophy are associated with specific neuropsychological deficits. The participants were 170 patients with AD and 99 patients with aMCI. All participants underwent the Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery (SNSB), which includes tests that assess a

Identifying Substance Use and High-Risk Sexual Behavior Among Sexual and Gender Minority Youth by Using Mobile Phone Data: Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals are at heightened risk for substance use and sexually transmitted infections than their non-SGM peers. Collecting mobile phone usage data passively may open new opportunities for personalizing interventions, as behavioral risks could be identified without user input. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine (1) whether passively sensed mobile phone data can be used to identify substance use and sexual risk behaviors for sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV transmission among young SGM who have sex with men, (2) which outcomes ca

Language impairment in the genetic forms of behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural variant fronto-temporal dementia (bvFTD) is characterised by a progressive change in personality in association with atrophy of the frontal and temporal lobes. Whilst language impairment has been described in people with bvFTD, little is currently known about the extent or type of linguistic difficulties that occur, particularly in the genetic forms. METHODS: Participants with genetic bvFTD along with healthy controls were recruited from the international multicentre Genetic FTD Initiative (GENFI). Linguistic symptoms were assessed using items from the Progressive Apha

Cognitive changes in post-stroke depression patients undergoing treatment with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS): an exploratory, ancillary analysis of a randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: Post-stroke depression affects approximately 40% of stroke survivors, with cognitive deficits being frequently observed. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has shown promise in improving cognitive performance in stroke patients. We explored the effects of tDCS on cognitive performance in post-stroke depression. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory analysis of 48 patients from a double-blinded, shamcontrolled, randomized clinical trial that investigated the effects of tDCS on post-stroke depression. A neuropsychological battery was applied at baseline and endpoint. We as

RADAR: A novel fast-screening method for reading difficulties with special focus on dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a developmental learning disorder of single word reading accuracy and/or fluency, with compelling research directed towards understanding the contributions of the visual system. While dyslexia is not an oculomotor disease, readers with dyslexia have shown different eye movements than typically developing students during text reading. Readers with dyslexia exhibit longer and more frequent fixations, shorter saccade lengths, more backward refixations than typical readers. Furthermore, readers with dyslexia are known to have difficulty in reading long words, lower skipping rate of sho

Changes in Tryptophan Catabolite (TRYCAT) Pathway Patterning Are Associated with Mild Impairments in Declarative Memory in Schizophrenia and Deficits in Semantic and Episodic Memory Coupled with Increased False-Memory Creation in Deficit Schizophrenia.

Evidence indicates that schizophrenia and in particular negative symptoms and deficit schizophrenia are accompanied by neurocognitive impairments and changes in the patterning of the tryptophan catabolite (TRYCAT) pathway. This cross-sectional study was carried out to examine the associations between cognitive functions (as measured with Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's disease (CERAD)) and TRYCAT pathway patterning in patients with (n = 40) and without (n = 40) deficit schizophrenia and normal controls (n = 40). Cognitive measures were assessed with the Verbal Fluency Test (

Increased Labyrinthine T1 Postgadolinium Signal Intensity Is Associated with the Degree of Ipsilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Patients with Sporadic Vestibular Schwannoma.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Vestibular schwannomas are benign, generally slow-growing tumors, commonly presenting with hearing loss. Alterations in the labyrinthine signal are seen in patients with vestibular schwannoma; however, the association between imaging abnormalities and hearing function remains poorly defined. The purpose of this study was to determine whether labyrinthine signal intensity is associated with hearing in patients with sporadic vestibular schwannoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was an institutional review board-approved retrospective review of patients from a prospectively

Performance-based assessments of cognition are less susceptible to demographic effects than traditional memory tests: Evidence from MindCrowd.

OBJECTIVE: Demographic corrections (e.g., sex, education, race, ethnicity) are often applied when assessing cognition in adults; however, these corrections have significant limitations (e.g., using years of education does not capture the quality of, or access to, education). It is therefore critical to develop novel assessment options that are less susceptible to demographic factors. This study compared demographic effects on a verbal memory test and a performance-based test of cognition and daily functioning in older adults. Based on prior work, we hypothesized the performance-based tests wou

The Wide Range Achievement Test-4 Reading subtest "holds" in HIV-infected individuals.

BACKGROUND: In order to detect HIV-associated neurocognitive decline, it is important to accurately estimate individuals' premorbid levels of cognitive functioning. Although previous studies have operated under the assumption that word reading tests are valid and stable indicators of premorbid abilities in HIV infection, studies of other populations have found that this is not always the case. Therefore, it is important to empirically examine the validity of word reading tests as estimates of premorbid functioning specifically within the HIV population. METHOD: The Wide Range Achievement Test

Visual Performance of Individuals With and Without Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.

Purpose  Dry eye disease (DED) is associated with decreased visual function, such as deterioration in reading speed. Changes in visual function in individuals with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which is commonly associated with evaporative DED, have not been well studied. This study evaluated best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and reading speed in individuals with and without MGD. Methods  In a 22-day, prospective, noninterventional, multicenter (three sites) clinical study (NCT01979887), eligible adults (age ≥40 years with no uncontrolled ocular or systemic disease other than MGD) were

Naming abilities in low-proficiency second language learners.

Difficulties in second language (L2) learning are often associated with recognizable learning difficulties in native language (L1), such as in dyslexia. However, some individuals have low L2 proficiency but intact L1 reading skills. These L2 learners experience frequent tip-of-the-tongue states while naming in L1, which indicates that they have a weakness in retrieval of phonological codes of words. The authors hypothesized that if naming ability is shared across languages, this difficulty would reemerge in L2 naming, which was tested using the tip-of-the-tongue experimental paradigm. Consiste

A model of comprehension in spina bifida meningomyelocele: meaning activation, integration, and revision.

Spina bifida meningomyelocele (SBM) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with adequate development of word reading and single word comprehension, but deficient text and discourse comprehension. Studies of comprehension in children with SBM are reviewed in relation to a comprehension model in which meanings are either activated from the surface code or constructed through resource-intensive integration and revision processes to form representations of the text base and models of the situation described by the text. Two new studies probed the construction of situation models in SBM. Exper

Associations of advanced glycation end-products with cognitive functions in individuals with and without type 2 diabetes: the maastricht study.

CONTEXT: Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. AGEs are products resulting from nonenzymatic chemical reactions between reduced sugars and proteins, which accumulate during natural aging, and their accumulation is accelerated in hyperglycemic conditions such as type 2 diabetes mellitus. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to examine associations between AGEs and cognitive functions. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This study was performed as part of the Maastricht Study, a population-based cohort study in which,
