Computationally Informed Interventions for Targeting Compulsive Behaviors.

Compulsive behaviors are central to addiction and obsessive-compulsive disorder and can be understood as a failure of adaptive decision making. Particularly, they can be conceptualized as an imbalance in behavioral control, such that behavior is guided predominantly by learned rather than inferred outcome expectations. Inference is a computational process required for adaptive behavior, and recent work across species has identified the neural circuitry that supports inference-based decision making. This includes the orbitofrontal cortex, which has long been implicated in disorders of compulsiv

Empowering Movement: A Human-in-the-Loop Proportional Controller for Assisted Elbow Flexion in Brachial Plexus Injury.

INTRODUCTION: Although powered orthotic devices are becoming more available and increasingly recognized by the medical community, several factors still prevent them from being widely adopted. These orthoses typically use a simple controller, often termed a "bang-bang" controller, which actuates a motor if the muscle's electromyography (EMG) signal is above a set threshold. A proportional controller that could actuate the elbow mechanism based on the EMG signal magnitude would enable a better human-machine connection. The real challenge for designing a proportional controller lies in the hetero

Social reward and nonsocial reward processing across the adult lifespan: An interim multi-echo fMRI and diffusion dataset.

Social relationships change across the lifespan as social networks narrow and motivational priorities shift. These changes may affect, or reflect, differences in how older adults make decisions related to processing social and non-social rewards. While we have shown initial evidence that older adults have a blunted response to some features of social reward, further work in larger samples is needed to replicate our results and probe the extent to which age-related differences translate to real world consequences, such as financial exploitation. To address this gap, we are conducting a 5-year s

Lifespan anxiety is reflected in human amygdala cortical connectivity.

The amygdala plays a pivotal role in processing anxiety and connects to large-scale brain networks. However, intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) between amygdala and these networks has rarely been examined in relation to anxiety, especially across the lifespan. We employed resting-state functional MRI data from 280 healthy adults (18-83.5 yrs) to elucidate the relationship between anxiety and amygdala iFC with common cortical networks including the visual network, somatomotor network, dorsal attention network, ventral attention network, limbic network, frontoparietal network, and default n

Optimal features assisted multi-attention fusion for robust fire recognition in adverse conditions.

Deep neural networks have significantly enhanced visual data-based fire detection systems. However, high false alarm rates, shallow-layered networks, and poor recognition in challenging environments continue to hinder their practical deployment. To address these limitations, we introduce the Attention-Enhanced Fire Recognition Network (AEFRN). This novel progressive attention-over-attention framework achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance while maintaining computational efficiency. Our approach introduces three key innovations: Firstly, Convolutional Self-Attention (CSA), integrating glo

Neurofeedback Training of the Control Network in Children Improves Brain Computer Interface Performance.

In the past 20 years, neural engineering has made unprecedented progress in the interpretation of brain information (e.g., brain-computer interfaces) and in neuromodulation (e.g., electromagnetic stimulation and neurofeedback). However, there has been little research aiming to improve the performance of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) using neuromodulation. The present study presents a novel design for a neurofeedback training (NFT) method to improve the operation of a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI and further explores its underlying mechanisms. The use of NFT to upre

When can neuronal activity-dependent homeostatic plasticity maintain circuit-level properties?

Neural circuits are remarkably robust to perturbations that threaten their function. Activity-dependent homeostatic plasticity (ADHP) is a stabilizing mechanism that supports robustness by tuning neuronal ion conductances to combat chronic over- or under-activity. Its restorative capacity has been demonstrated in the pyloric circuit of the crustacean stomatogastric ganglion, whose neurons must burst in a specific order to coordinate digestive muscles. After disruption by physical and pharmacological manipulations, this circuit reliably recovers not only the activity levels of constituent neuro

Private Data Incrementalization: Data-Centric Model Development for Clinical Liver Segmentation.

Machine Learning models, more specifically Artificial Neural Networks, are transforming medical imaging by enabling precise liver segmentation, a crucial task for diagnosing and treating liver diseases. However, these models often face challenges in adapting to diverse clinical data sources as differences in dataset volume, resolution, and origin impact generalization and performance. This study introduces a Private Data Incrementalization, a data-centric approach to enhance the adaptability of Artificial Neural Networks by progressively exposing them to varied clinical data. As the target of

VCNet: Hybrid Deep Learning Model for Detection and Classification of Lung Carcinoma Using Chest Radiographs.

Detection of malignant lung nodules from Computed Tomography (CT) images is a significant task for radiologists. But, it is time-consuming in nature. Despite numerous breakthroughs in studies on the application of deep learning models for the identification of lung cancer, researchers and doctors still face challenges when trying to deploy the model in clinical settings to achieve improved accuracy and sensitivity on huge datasets. In most situations, deep convolutional neural networks are used for detecting the region of the main nodule of the lung exclusive of considering the neighboring tis

Beyond the dichotomy between controlled and naturalistic paradigms: modeling psychological constructs in cognitive neuroscience.

Cognitive neuroscience aims to link psychological constructs to brain activity, but this goal depends critically on how such constructs are operationalized. Conventional controlled paradigms define constructs through task contrasts or parametric manipulations, providing interpretability by restricting the range of stimuli, behavioral responses, and task demands. Naturalistic paradigms instead use complex, temporally extended stimuli such as movies, narratives, and music, enabling brain activity to be modeled in relation to continuous, multidimensional features of real-world inputs. With the ri

A regularization method for linking brain and behavior.

In a world of big data and computational resources, there has been a growing interest in further validating computational models of decision making by subjecting them to more rigorous constraints. One prominent area of study is model-based cognitive neuroscience, where measures of neural activity are explained and interpreted through the lens of a cognitive model. Although some early work has developed the statistical framework for exploiting the covariation between brain and behavior through factor analysis linking functions, current methods are still far from providing parsimonious accounts

Investigation of the correlation between radiomorphometric indices in cone-beam computed tomography images and dual X-ray absorptiometry bone density test results in postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis is a prevalent skeletal disorder characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and structural deterioration, resulting in increased fracture risk. Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent fractures and improve patient outcomes. This study investigates the diagnostic utility of morphometric and cortical indices derived from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for identifying osteoporotic postmenopausal women who were candidates for dental implant therapy, with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) used as the reference standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-se

Modeling Rapid Contextual Learning in the Visual Cortex with Fast-Weight Deep Autoencoder Networks.

Recent neurophysiological studies have revealed that the early visual cortex can rapidly learn global image context, as evidenced by a sparsification of population responses and a reduction in mean activity when exposed to familiar versus novel image contexts. This phenomenon has been attributed primarily to local recurrent interactions, rather than changes in feedforward or feedback pathways-supported by both empirical findings and circuit-level modeling. Recurrent neural circuits capable of simulating these effects have been shown to reshape the geometry of neural manifolds, enhancing robust

Partitioning Neural Co-Variability.

Trial-to-trial variability of neural responses has been linked to important aspects of neural computation and is essential for understanding how neuronal populations respond. While current overdispersion models treat each neuron's gain as independent of each other, this assumption fails to capture the network statistics of neuronal populations. As no existing model can capture overdispersed structured spiking gain-modulation across a neural population, network-level gain covariance remains largely unstudied. We thus present the Poisson matrix-normal latent variable (PMNLV) model, which extends

Neural Encoding and Decoding With Distributed Sentence Representations.

Building computational models to account for the cortical representation of language plays an important role in understanding the human linguistic system. Recent progress in distributed semantic models (DSMs), especially transformer-based methods, has driven advances in many language understanding tasks, making DSM a promising methodology to probe brain language processing. DSMs have been shown to reliably explain cortical responses to word stimuli. However, characterizing the brain activities for sentence processing is much less exhaustively explored with DSMs, especially the deep neural netw

AMFF-Net: An Adaptive Multi-Layer Feature Fusion Network Based on ConvNeXtV2-B for Medical Image Classification.

Although ConvNeXtV2 has shown promising performance in medical image classification, approaches relying primarily on final-stage features may underutilize low-level structural and complementary hierarchical information. To address this limitation, we propose an Adaptive Multi-Layer Feature Fusion Network (AMFF-Net) based on ConvNeXtV2-B for medical image classification. The proposed framework employs a Feature Alignment (FA) module to project multi-stage features into a unified representation space and an Adaptive Multi-Layer Feature Fusion (AMFF) module to compute a single input-dependent sca

Charles Bonnet syndrome: evidence for a generative model in the cortex?

Several theories propose that the cortex implements an internal model to explain, predict, and learn about sensory data, but the nature of this model is unclear. One condition that could be highly informative here is Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS), where loss of vision leads to complex, vivid visual hallucinations of objects, people, and whole scenes. CBS could be taken as indication that there is a generative model in the brain, specifically one that can synthesise rich, consistent visual representations even in the absence of actual visual input. The processes that lead to CBS are poorly unde

Altered resting-state functional connectivity in cortical networks in psychopathy.

Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by callous antisocial behavior and criminal recidivism. Here we examine whether psychopathy is associated with alterations in functional connectivity in three large-scale cortical networks. Using fMRI in 142 adult male prison inmates, we computed resting-state functional connectivity using seeds from the default mode network, frontoparietal network, and cingulo-opercular network. To determine the specificity of our findings to these cortical networks, we also calculated functional connectivity using seeds from two comparison primary sensory n
