MRI/DTI data are presented in a child with sensoneurinal hearing loss and swallowing disorder. MRI/DTI revealed hypoplastic 8th cranial nerves and an inferior pontine segmentation abnormality. Color-coded FA-maps revealed diminished/absent fiber tracts within the affected brainstem segment. This report may add another small puzzle piece to the ongoing research on brainstem malformations.

Migration of a foreign body from the hypopharynx to the subcutaneous tissue of the neck is a rare event. We report a case of a 48-year-old male who accidentally swallowed a fish bone which was not identified intraoperatively. The patient then presented with migration of the bone to the soft tissue of the neck. We conclude that careful assessment of the patient with a foreign body in the throat is crucial to avoid fatal complications.

A 32-year-old man developed hoarseness of voice, inability to swallow and restricted movement of the tongue after open heart surgery. Peripheral injury of the cranial nerves IX, X and XII was suspected, and it was thought that the duration of the surgery together with the endotracheal tube cuff and trans-oesophageal echocardiography probe pressure, as well as the head and neck position might have been the causes of this complication.

Infantile rumination can be defined as self-induced regurgitation of previously swallowed food. Because it can lead to potential somatic complications and because it implies dysfunctional mother-child bonding, both a pediatric and psychiatric approach is needed. The treatment must be somatic (nutritional) and psychological (intensive nursing, mother-baby psychotherapy). Two case studies illustrate this rare but impressive picture.

Pseudoaneurysm of the internal carotid artery (PAICA) is a rare complication of neck space infection. An 8-year-old girl presented with odynophagia (painful swallowing), trismus and left peritonsillar swelling. Abscess was suspected, but aspiration was dry. The PAICA was diagnosed on computed tomography. The aneurysm and involved left internal carotid artery were occluded endovascularly. She has made an uneventful recovery.

Speech and language therapists are involved in the care of a wide range of pathogies. Recent changes have been marked by an increased involvement in feeding and swallowing work with premature babies, and oropharyngeal cancer sufferers. Changes have also occurred in assessment and management of communication problems resulting from acquired neurological pathologies such as stroke, Parkinson's disease and dementia. Some of these are discussed in the following article.

Hazards of oral implant treatment include the inadvertent ingestion or inhalation of components or instruments dropped accidentally into the oropharynx. A case is reported of a swallowed screwdriver, and attention is drawn to the potentially serious consequences. Guidance is given on management. Inhalation of foreign bodies is an even more serious event. The importance of prevention is emphasized both from a medicolegal point of view and as a matter of proper patient care.

A male fetus with multiple congenital abnormalities is reported. The parents of the fetus are consanguineous. There were unusual facial features, digital anomalies, cleft palate, a malformed tongue that prevented swallowing, absent clavicles and genital hypoplasia. The fetus had features suggestive of both Crane-Heise syndrome and aminopterin syndrome sine aminopterin (ASSAS), and may represent part of a spectrum of abnormalities including these conditions.

Due to proliferation of the fatty tissue in the neck and depending on the degree of compression of the pharynx, larynx, vessels, nerve trunks the patients show, respiratory disorders, swallowing disturbances, dysarthria, stenocardia, neck and occipital pain, scalenus syndrome, cervicobrachialgia, posterior cervical sympathetic syndrome, disorders of the cerebral and spinal blood circulation. Rehabilitation of the glossectomy patient is one of the most difficult and challenging problems for the prosthodontist and speech pathologist. The tongue plays an important role in articulation, control of secretions, formation of a bolus, propulsion of the bolus toward the pharynx, clearing the palate, and initiation of the swallow reflex. This paper presents speech and prosthodontic considerations for a patient who underwent a glossectomy and had the additional problem of reduced oral opening.

Neither cineradiography nor videorecording are satisfactory techniques for the dynamic study of the oral phase of deglutition. Therefore, oral swallowing was studied by means of real-time sonography (US) in 20 asymptomatic patients. Both anatomy and motility of the muscles of the mouth and tongue were clearly demonstrated. Real-time US proved thus to allow an accurate and dynamic visualization of the oral phase of deglutition.

The effects on the oesophagus of an aromatic oil, guaiacol, has been examined in a group of 20 patients with reflux oesophagitis and also normal volunteers. This agent produced a rapid and sustained rise in resting lower oesophageal sphincter pressures and the peristaltic pressures induced in response to swallowing liquids. This compound may prove useful in the treatment of patients with reflux oesophagitis and other disorders of oesophageal motility.
