To evaluate different methods for strain differentiation, 10 isolates of Aspergillus terreus from Germany and two epidemiologically unrelated strains were investigated. Metalorganic and quarternary ammonium compounds when added to culture medium inhibited growth of Aspergillus niger mycelium and activity of neutral and alkaline phosphatase. Disseminated aspergillosis attributable to Aspergillus deflectus was diagnosed in a Springer Spaniel with lethargy, lameness, anorexia, weight loss, pyrexia, lymphadenopathy, hematuria, and urinary incontinence. Necropsy revealed granulomatous inflammation and numerous fungal hyphae in many organs. The conidial heads of the fungus have a characteristic briar-pipe appearance in culture.

We present the first reported case of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) due to Aspergillus glaucus in a mushroom worker. The Aspergillus glaucus group is one of the most popular storage fungi and a possible subsidiary etiologic agent of farmer's lung, but no case of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) due to A. glaucus has been reported. This first case may demonstrate the etiologic role of A. glaucus in HP and in farmer's lung.

We present an autopsy case of concomitant pulmonary aspergillosis and nocardiosis undiagnosed during life in a long-term surviving renal transplant recipient. The patient had fever and a newly developed cavitary lesion on a chest x-ray. The working diagnosis was pulmonary tuberculosis with possible colonization by Aspergillus species. An 85-year-old, nondiabetic man is described with necrotizing (malignant) otitis externa. The patient developed facial nerve paralysis in the presence of a progressive cellulitis and chondritis of the external auditory meatus. Four cases of Aspergillus osteomyelitis are presented and the world literature is reviewed, for a total of 19 cases. Aspergillus osteomyelitis is largely a disease of immunosuppressed hosts, although wound and other infections in "normal" hosts are seen. In children, contiguous spread from an adjacent pulmonary infection is most common, whereas in adults hematogenous spread is the rule. The survival rate in immunocompromised patients is poor, whereas the cure rate is uniform in "normal" hosts. A combined medical-surgical therapeutic approach has been used most often and seems appropriate.

Five cases of aspergillosis complicating Hodgkin's disease and leukaemia are reported. The organs involved were: lungs (all five cases), stomach (Case 3); brain and meninges (Case 4); heart, kidneys, spleen, thyroid, and liver (Case 2). Invasive aspergillosis is a severe fungal infection that usually affects the immunocompromised, e.g., transplant patients. Sequence-based analysis has become increasingly important for understanding fungal virulence, fungal identification, and monitoring drug resistance. In this chapter, we describe methods for the isolation of fungal DNA from different sample types and quality control of sequence data.

We share an unusual presentation of fungal (Aspergillus) peritoneal dialysis catheter infection diagnosed by a color change in a patient's PD transfer set. Recognizing and sharing uncommon presentations of fungal infection is important to help others diagnose and intervene early, which may reduce the development of fungal peritonitis, which is associated with high rates of mortality and technique failure.

We present the case of a 28-year-old man with no personal history of interest and an episode of acute right dacryocystitis despite medical treatment. He underwent dacryocystectomy, in which samples were obtained for anatomopathological and microbiological studies with results of Aspergillus niger. Acute Aspergillus dacryocystitis is very rare in immunocompetent adult. After the operation, the condition resolved without recurrence after 1 year without adjuvant treatment.
